Construction and function

4.2 Function
Roasting exhaust gases occur during the roasting process which
are loaded with solid matters (chaff and dust) and unwanted
odours. In order to fulfil the legal requirements, these roasting
exhaust gases have to be cleaned. For PROBAT roasters of the
series PROBATONE this takes place in two stages:

Solid matters are discharged in the cyclone

Odour reduction in ECOLOGIST SHOP ...

The exhaust gases occurring from the roasting process are sucked
by the roaster fan (V6). It conveys to the roasting cyclone (F1) by
which coffee chaff and dust are separated from the roasting air by
means of centrifugal force. A chaff collecting bin (F12) fastened
under the roasting cyclone collects the chaff.

The mechanically cleaned air gets into the new exhaust air filter
system of the Ecologist Shop series. It offers a considerable and at
the same time cost-efficient method in order to counteract the
odour development.

In contrast to many other available filter systems, this system does

not need any additional burner. This renders possible a
considerable cost reduction and an environmentally-friendly
exhaust air treatment.

For cleaning, the exhaust air (approx. 140°C) of the roasting

system is led into the filter chamber and liberated from small dust
particles, oils and unwanted odours.

Via the pressure display the operator can check at any time if the
pressure in the system is constant. As soon as the pressure loss
increases to 200 pascal, an exchange of the filter mats is
necessary. Long-term studies have shown that this is normally the
case after a production of approx. 4,000 kg of green coffee.

The filter bottoms should be cleaned weekly. This can be done by

means of an industrial vacuum cleaner.

An exchange of the zeolite media bed of the filter system has to be

done after a production capacity of 8,000 kg of green coffee. For
this purpose the sealings have to be checked and renewed if
necessary.

Installation

5 Installation
After the start of the roaster, the filter unit is active. An important
hint for the smooth function is the displayed pressure on the
manometer:

90 Pa corresponds to an optimal exhaust air cleaning

200 Pa corresponds to cleaning respectively exchange of
the pre-filter and the wire mesh cover

The max. pressure for a good function of the unit is 200 pascal.
Higher pressures might lead to damages of the unit.

HINT!
Check the pressure on the manometer display at
least three times per day.

5.1 Plant logbook

For your own check, you should keep a plant logbook in
which you note the following details:

a.) = Measured with Testa FID 123 as per VD! 3481, part 1 and as per DIN EN 12619-1999, annex E
b.) = gravimetric determination with tubular filter device as per VDI 2066, part 1, 2, 6
* = refered to standard condtion dry, expressed as average value related to half an hour under operational conditions
= higher concentration could occure in the case of darker roast and higher ratio of Robusta coffee, the odour filter reduces the org. carbon as far as 50% depending on green coffee
blend and degree of roast
= the indecated odour value refer to a certain Arabica coffee, colour approx. 100 Skt Colorette 3, in case of darker roast and higher ratio of Robusta coffee higher odour concentrations
occure, the actual concentration of odour compounds heavily depends on green coffee blend, degree of roast and air conditions in the roaster, forasmuch the indecated values
are guideline values; the odour filter reduces the odour emissions, depending on the green coffee blend and the degree of roast, as far as 70%

stg = in dust form g = in gas form

- The values of the exhaust gas streams and mass concentration refer to standard condition. ( 273,15 K; 101,3 kPa)
- The indecated emission values are based on a certain green coffee composition, a certain degree of roast as well as on a certain residual moisture content.
