Seismic Design Using Structural Dynamics

Outline of a Short Course by S. K. Ghosh

This short course on “Seismic design using structural dynamics” is a follow-up of an earlier
seminar: “Seismic design of RC structures using UBC / ACI Provisions” which was held in Dubai in
November last year. The need for a review of the basis and proper application of dynamic analyses,
which are extensively used for design of tall buildings in Dubai, was pointed out by many of the
participants.

The course addresses the basic concepts of structural dynamics (t ) [M ]{u}+ [C ]{u}+ [K ]{u}= {P }
and the modal response spectrum
analysis procedure according to the provisions
qn + 2z nwn qof the 1997 UBC. The material is presented in a

manner that most suits the practicing design engineer and demystifies the application of the UBC N N
