Good afternoon to all staff and students,

This message is in regards to an on-going research effort that has been conducted throughout the
student union for the past two weeks in hopes of better understanding how we can utilize the
location to promote unity and school spirit. The findings of this study ultimately concluded that
our campus can capitalize on these opportunities by introducing an assortment of new activities
that will range from class-sponsored group study sessions that award students extra credit to
exciting community activities that provide students with a chance to relax or have some fun. To
inquire whether your course will permit these extra-credit opportunities, it will be necessary for
students to contact their professors while also ensuring they sign in at the designated locations
for each particular course/session and for a full list of upcoming student activities, you can also
visit the Popp Martin Student Union online webpage. We believe these study sessions will
provide students with an opportunity to converse and learn from fellow peers who are in the
same course as themselves while also reinforcing their in-class material and providing them with
an extra-credit opportunity simultaneously. The provided student activities will work to further
the ideals of student development with the promotion of campus spirit through community
building opportunities such as a dodgeball tournament with a cash prize, which will further
entice students to participate in these activities. During these times, participating students will
also have the chance to order food from any of the student union’s dining options for a
discounted price, furthering their appetites to learn and develop themselves throughout the
location. We hope that this opportunity for improvement will allow us to grow closer as a
campus while also promoting the ideals that exemplify our great qualities as attendees of the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Remember to check the Student Union webpage for
details on these events, as we cannot wait for the chance to see you there and better our school
community!

Rationale

For my initial inquiry project, I chose to center my paper around an evaluation of our own Popp
Martin student union as compared to the contemporary ideals of this location’s characteristics on
a modern college campus. When considering how I could repurpose these intentions with another
genre or intended outcome, I essentially found myself analyzing the observations and reflections
that I procured from this process in a different light to understand how to best cater to a different
audience. As I examined possible options to fulfill this requiem, my ideas were centered on
possible suggestions that I could offer as a result of my research and observations, as the various
qualities of a student union always allow room for improvement due to the fact that nothing is
always perfect. Considering this initial objective, I decided that my project would be formatted
as a memo or newsletter of sorts, which would provide staff and others who often attend their
campus student union with information as to how they could better utilize and improve their
school building. I hoped this type of suggestive writing will help persuade my audience to better
utilize the spaces they are provided to work while also assisting them in accessing the full
potential of these locations in the most efficient and effective manners possible. As previously
stated, I have recognized my primary audience to be staff members of the student union along
with those college students who actively participate in activities pertaining to this location due to
the fact that these recommendations would be irrelevant to any other building on campus.
Considering this central focus on the location itself, it would make sense that people who often
visit this location would be those who also place the most concern on possible areas of
improvement, as this benefit ultimately affects their demographic due to the information’s sole
focus on the student union. It should also be considered that the genre of a memo is usually
meant to convey a relatively small amount of information in a direct format, as the fact that they
are typically addressed to a specific audience means that these updates are meant to be concise
and straight-to-the-point. As you consider language practices that could possibly cater to this
form of writing, it seems that the author should simply focus on ensuring they deliver the
information they hope to share in a format that allows the reader to easily obtain the intended
message due to the fact that their attention is limited. Assumptions about the users or creators of
this type of content are largely focused around the knowledge that these works are intended to
provide, as it is essential that the author is educated on the topics of their writing in order to
ensure they best inform the reader. One who produces a writing similar to this also assumes that
the staff and students possess the motivation to learn about possible improvements to their
student union, as apathy for the implementation of these suggestions ultimately makes the work
purposeless considering that this would be the overarching goal of the writing. Considering
possible power differences exhibited by this information, it seems that the primary demographic
variation is a result of the situational differences between working staff and students who both
utilize the student union, as students mainly look to the location for its offering of services while
staff are more personally obliged to this location by their responsibility of providing this service
in the most efficient and effective manners possible.
