EXPLORATION ACTIVITY #3 TEJ SHAH

Exploration Activity: Watch a Recorded GS 119 Presentation

1. Name of the presenter, the college, and the department/majors.

⮚ Nicole Counter, in the College of Science, and the department/ major is Dual major in

Computer Science & Data Science.

2. Provide a general summary of the coursework (i.e., is this major heavy in science,

math, foreign language, etc.). What topics will you learn about in your junior and

senior years? Be specific!

⮚ This major focuses on the field of software development and hardly includes any

knowledge regarding hardware (only one course in the required courses). The major

requires a lot of mathematical knowledge and skills and includes advanced mathematics

courses. The list consists of but is not limited to, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Multivariate

Calculus and Linear Algebra. The major also requires statistical knowledge and so

includes higher level statistics, such as STAT 35000. There are also some specific

language requirements, such as great speaking (COM) and writing (ENGL) skills and

a foreign language requirement too. However, the foreign language requirement is

waived off for international students. The first 2 years in the major are general and train

the students for their junior and senior years. In the junior year, students have to choose

a specific track from the 9 available options and each option consists of certain courses

that range from 6 to 7 courses and the chance to undertake electives. Since there are

some common courses among the different tracks, the advantage to the track system is

that the students are not restricted to only one track but can take more than one if they

are capable enough to take a serious amount of workload.

3. List any unique opportunities within the major (study abroad, internship

required, etc.).

⮚ The job placement of this major is almost 100%, which suggests that the scope is great

and probability is high that one might end up getting great internship opportunities, paid

or unpaid, and the chance to research in other prestigious universities.

⮚ Purdue University itself provides paid internships for students.

⮚ The internships are not restricted to only IT companies, but one might be able to get

into NASA or SpaceX or any other company that required computer programming

skills.

⮚ Study abroad is a great addition to this major and is preferable for juniors and seniors

as they are well aware of the programming and computer skills and have the opportunity

of free electives as their University Core Curriculum requirements are also fulfilled by

the time.

⮚ There are data mine programs, affiliated with big companies, that give the opportunity

to be a part of companies such Facebook, Microsoft, Google, etc. and research with

them, under their guidance and supervision.

⮚ There are numerous career fairs for Data Mine majors and Computer Science majors,

and there also few fairs collaborated with the College of Engineering and the

Engineering department.

4. What types of careers can you go into with this degree?

⮚ Software Developer (Systems Software)

⮚ Financial Analyst

⮚ Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers

⮚ Information Security Analyst

⮚ Database Administrator

⮚ Computer Systems Analyst

⮚ Computer Network Architect

⮚ Software Developer (Application)

⮚ Research with professors & tutoring

5. What skills, personality traits, and interests do you think would be a good fit for

this major?

⮚ People who are deep thinkers and have unique ways to solve a problem are welcome

the most in this major.

⮚ Advanced mathematical skills are highly required and are a must.

⮚ People who have great analytical skills, have critical thinking and are ready to face and

solve complex problems.

⮚ Interest in engineering and technology.

⮚ People who are curious to explore and adapt to new things.

⮚ Comfortable with using and handling computers.

⮚ Programmers or want-to-be programmers.

6. Name three things you learned from the presentation that you didn’t know before

attending.

⮚ One can now choose to do a double major: Computer Science, as well as Data.

⮚ Students are not bound to their major and can explore other courses too through the

easy-to-choose electives.

⮚ Students are not required to have pre-knowledge or any programming skills.

⮚ Inside Computer Science there a lot of branches for specialization and one is open to

free any of them depending on his preferences.

7. Are you still considering this major(s)? Why or why not?

⮚ To be honest, I used to consider this major earlier but just wanted to explore it before

fixing up my mind with Industrial Management. Henceforth, I decided to explore it

with this activity. I honestly do not consider this major for myself as I love working

with new technology and software but I am not a coding guy. I have done coding in my

high school and I am also taking a certificate course currently and from that, I feel

coding is not my thing. But I have to accept the fact that this one of the major with very

high potential and really high salary and the best thing is the 100% placement rate, this

is insane.
