Reflection: (What have you learned about your students? How will this inform future instruction?)

I think my lesson went very well. I learned that the children love exploring new investigations. At the beginning of my lesson, the kids were

extremely excited to have a “new” teacher and a new lesson to experience. I think having the animal sounds all in one spot made things very easily

accessed during the lesson. I had many different animals. There were stuffed animals, pictures of animals, and even plastic animals. I liked that the

groups could answer with the animal names and could choose out of the bucket of which one made that noise. This allowed them to work on their

sharing and listening skills.

I learned that the younger group can stay very engaged. They listened great to my directions. They were calm and quiet while I was giving

my lesson unless they were answering what sound I played for them. They identified most of the sounds. The one they struggled with was the sheep

sound. They wanted to label sheep as a goat. Then they got mixed up on the actual goat noise. I think that is fair because that one was the hardest

sound. Most of these children have never seen a goat or a sheep and probably don’t even know the difference. Six of the younger students could keep

up with counting to 5. Five could count together to 10. I wanted to tie in counting since the teachers are teaching and reviewing them.

The older group was very different from the younger kids. Our teachers describe them as a “special” group. They are very hyper and active

which made it hard for them to focus. They were also very grabby with the things I brought. They tend to throw fits when they do not get their way,

so I made sure each student got to pick an animal as well as touching them. When it came to knowing the animal sounds, they knew all but one. One

child knew the sheep but the other eight did not. One child did not get the animal names marked off on the check list due to not being engaged and

paying attention. They were all able to count together to 10. Each student in both groups passed the 80% proficient percentage besides one.

Even though I was happy with my lesson, there are still some things I could change. One thing is to have stuffed or plastic animals for each

one used. Another change I would have loved is having the older group split up into smaller groups. There were nine all together and they tend feed

off each other’s energy and become wild. The teacher would not allow this so it wasn’t an option. She was not flexible at all when it came to doing

our lessons. At least overall, I had a great experience with giving my lesson and allowing the children to learn.

***Child #9 has a very low attention span and has a very hard time focusing. He was not very engaged despite trying to “bring him back in” multiple times.
