Reed City selects
distinguished alumnus
REED CITY — Reed City Area
Public Schools is proud to an-
nounce Nathan Franklin as the
2019 Distinguished Alumnus. Na-
te is a 1996 Reed City Graduate.
During his school career at
Reed City school Franklin was
an honor student, varsity soccer
team captain, a member of the
marching and concert bands and
a member of the Jolly Ranchers
4H Club. He also volunteered
his time as a camp counselor at
Albright Camp and earned All-
Conference honors in soccer and
concert band.
While attending Western Mich-
igan University, Franklin was a
founding father and treasurer of
the newly established chapter of
Alpha Sigma Phi and remains
an alumni advisor today. During
this time, he also volunteered as
a Unified Special Olympics bas-
ketball coach.
Franklin continues his lead-
ership as branch manager for
Hardwoods where he also leads
his company’s North American
sales training team. Hardwoods,
based in Grand Rapids, is a dis-
tributor of decorative architec-
tural building products.
As a board member of the Fru-
itport Education Foundation,
Franklin is involved with orga-
nizing functions and events that
raise funding for grants made
available to teachers and scholar-
ships to seniors. He is also the
Treasurer for Yes For Fruitport’s
Future, a group that helped raise
support of a successful $50 mil-
lion bond proposal.
Franklin resides in Fruitport
with his wife, Susan, and daugh-
ter, Gretchen.

to continue the expansion of
their operations and increase
productivity, Reed City Group
plans on making several new
changes throughout the upcom-
ing year.
In an email and press release
sent out by Reed City Market-
ing Associate Thomas Miller,
he writes that the company is
looking to add special machin-
ery and change the layout of
their plastics department to
increase efficiency and produc-
tion.
“This new machine expands
our capabilities and really
strengthens our core,” Miller
wrote, “but importantly also
increases our rank in the world
of manufacturers and in the
market of what we do.”

Evart schools name its top 10 students fro 2019 graduating class
EVART — After four years of
high school, 10 students have
been given the title of top stu-
dents for the 2019 graduating
class.
In order of class rank, Nathan
Woods, Laura Junker, Austin
Hamilton, Carter Pritchard,
Christian Booher, Mackenzie
Daniels, Rebecca Kleeves, Sara
Hinojosa, Chase Schildhouse and
Chase Walter made the top 10 out
of the 72 graduating seniors.
To be in the top 10, students had
to have the highest accumulative
grade point averages out of the
class of 2019.
Each of the top 10 have all been
involved in extracurricular ac-
tivities during high school rang-
ing from multiple sports teams
to National Honor Society. On
average the students participated
in around four extracurricular
activities.
“Extracurriculars open a lot of
doors,” wrote Woods in a survey
passed around to the top 10 stu-
dents. “Join robotics or a sport —
even if you think you’re not good
at it — for the experience.”
While this year, as in previ-
ous years, students were ranked
on their GPA, next year’s top 10
will be ranked on GPA and SAT
scores.
“This only adds to the rankings
and gives students a little more
opportunities to make it in our
top 10 than when based on GPA
alone,” said Evart High School

Lake County in last place again in child well-being ranking

Once again Lake Coun-
ty’s kids are in last place
in Michigan.
It’s not because of any-
thing the kids have done.
It’s based on an annual
ranking that measures
kids’ overall well-being
throughout the state and
nationwide.
Only 82 of Michigan’s
83 counties get an overall
child well-being ranking
in the Kids Count report;
Keewanaw County is left
off the rankings because
the population is small
and data is scant.
Of the 82 counties that
do get rankings, Lake
County is often last. This
is the fourth year in a
row that Lake County has
been last in the well-being
rankings, though Kids
Count in Michigan Project

Lake County’s ranking in
last place.
“There’s some progress
being made here,” Warren
said of the county. But the
“economic security piece”
can be hard to overcome
— Lake County is last or
second-to-last in all three
economic security mea-
sures.
Child poverty improved
in Lake County by over 27
percent between 2012 and
2017, the most recent year
top-quarter of the rank-
ings. Missaukee County
alone was in the top half,
at 39th. Osceola County
was in the bottom half,
at 57th and Wexford and
Lake counties were in the
bottom quarter at 72nd
and 82nd, respectively.

best rankings were in the

• Officers responded to a
report of a possible intoxi-
cated driver. The vehicle in
question was located and
the matter was unfounded.
Tuesday, 4/16/19
• Officers were dis-
patched to a two-car per-
sonal property damage
accident. No injuries were
reported.
• Officers were requested
to take a report of harass-
ment from the parent of
a juvenile female. The
woman explained a series
of suspicious situations be-
tween her daughter and the
girl’s ex-boyfriend, also a
juvenile. They did not want
to seek charges as long as
the harassment stopped.
Wednesday, 4/17/19
• Officers were dis-
patched to a local apart-
ment regarding a report of
a male who left the apart-
ment upset and was talk-
ing about committing sui-
cide after an argument and
roughly handling his child.
Officers sent out a BOL and
alerted MSP and Wexford
County law enforcement
after finding the individual
may be traveling north. A
warrant request was sub-
mitted to the prosecuting
attorney’s office for review
regarding the possible
child abuse.
• Officers were requested
to respond to the Osceola
County Probation Office re-
garding a 20-year-old male
who was in violation of his
probation. The man was
arrested and transported
to the Osceola County Jail
without incident.
Thursday, 4/18/19
• Officers were called to
the Osceola County Proba-
tion and Parole Office re-
garding a parole violator.
The officers arrived and ar-
rested the 50-year-old male.
He was transported to the
Osceola County Jail where
he was lodged without inci-
dent.
Friday, 4/19/19
• Officer’s received a no-
tice to be on the lookout
for a vehicle in which the
caller reported seeing the
driver beating a small child
in the backseat. Officers lo-
cated the vehicle and ques-
tioned the mother, who ex-
plained the child had been
playing with a container
of baby powder and spilled
it on himself and she was
brushing it off of him. The
officer observed the happy
child, finding no indication
of distress or beating. The
matter was unfounded.
• Officers were dis-
patched to respond to a
two-car property damage
accident, where one ve-
hicle rear-ended another.
The front driver explained
he slammed on his breaks
due to a dog running out in
front of him, and the vehi-
cle behind rear-ended him.
Once the officers finished
the accident report, he lo-
cated the owner of the dog
that was running at large
causing the accident. The
owner accepted the respon-
sibility, explaining that a
child had opened the door
letting the dog out. The offi-
cer issued the owner a dog
at large citation.

to find any curb damage or
the vehicle. No one outside
the businesses reported
seeing the vehicle.

mation regarding a 23-year-
old male that had been
picked up on an outstand-
ing warrant for failing to
appear in court and was
lodged in Isabella County
Jail awaiting pickup. The

into custody and lodged
