INSTRUCTIONS

PREPARE THE MANE AND THE TAIL

You can make these out of anything you like if you want to get creative but this is how we did it.

We used a ball of variegated Perle 5 thread. For the Mane, cut a piece of thick cardboard about 4 inches long and
for the tail, cut a piece of thick cardboard about 8 inches long.
Wrap the thread around and around until you have a small bunch of thread. Remove from the cardboard and use
sticky tape to wrap one end of each bundle (this will stop the bundles from coming apart).

We made about eight bundles for the mane and one larger bundle for the tail.

Hoop cutaway stabiliser in the 6x10 hoop

Load the design for the legs onto your machine.

STEP 1 - Stitch the placement line for Fabric A.

Place Fabric A right side up on top of the hoop covering the placement line.

STEP 2 - Stitch fabric A down.

Use the top line sewn as the placement line for the first Fabric B.

Place Fabric B wrong side up covering the placement line with the excess towards the bottom of the hoop as shown.

STEP 3 Stitch the fabric down.

STEP 4 Fold over and stitch down.

Use the bottom line sewn as the placement line for the second Fabric B.

Place the second Fabric B wrong side up covering the placement line with the excess towards the top of the hoop as
shown.

STEP 5 Stitch the fabric down.

STEP 6 Fold over and stitch down.

STEP 7 Embroider the floral design (if you want it) on the legs. If you don’t just skip this step.

Place Fabric C on top of the hoop wrong side up.

STEP 8 Stitch Fabric C down. It will leave a gap for turning later.

STEP 9 Stitch the triple stitch (this will strengthen the seams).
Remove from the hoop and cut out the legs leaving ¼ inch seam. (Make sure you clip the corners).

Turn out the right way (we used a chop stick to push out the ends) and stuff the legs.

Hand sew or glue the seam closed.

Hoop cutaway stabiliser in the 6x10 hoop

Load the design for the side 1 and ears onto your machine.

STEP 1 - Stitch the placement line for Fabric F the ears.

Place Fabric F right side up on top of the hoop covering the placement line.

Place Fabric G on top of that wrong side up. (In other words your fabric F and G will be wrong sides together).
STEP 2 - Stitch them down.

STEP 3 Stitch the triple stitch (this will strengthen the seams).

Leave your work in the hoop and go on now to make the body of the horse.

STEP 4 - Stitch the placement line for Fabric D.

Place Fabric D right side up on top of the hoop covering the placement line.
STEP 5 - Stitch fabric D down.

STEP 6 Embroider the floral design (if you want it) on the body. If you don’t, just skip this step.

STEP 7 Embroider the eye.

Remove the hoop from the machine and cut out the ears leaving ¼ inch seam. We also trimmed the seams of the body
panel to 1/2 inch (Make sure you clip the corners).
Turn the ears out the right way (we used a chop stick to push out the ends).

Hold the ears and the side 1 body aside for later.

SEW THE BODY SIDE 2 LAST

Hoop cutaway stabiliser in the 6x10 hoop

Load the design for the side 2 onto your machine.

STEP 1 - Stitch the placement line for Fabric E.

Place Fabric E right side up on top of the hoop covering the placement line.

STEP 2 - Stitch fabric E down.

STEP 3 Embroider the floral design (if you want it) on the body. If you don’t, just skip this step.
STEP 4 Embroider eye.

STEP 5 Stitch the placement lines for the body and the tail and the mane.

You will see the little tabs in the stitching where the tail and mane will go.

Place the tail you made earlier between the two tabs. Have the taped end of the tail just across the placement line
and the length of the tail on top of what will be the horse’s body.
Sticky tape in place as shown.

Repeat now with the mane spreading the taped pieces evenly across the area.

Place the body side 1 wrong side up on top of the body side 2 and try to match where the eye and the flower fall.

STEP 6 Stitch the fabric down, it will leave an opening for turning. (We turned the machine speed down to the
slowest speed to make it easier to stitch down).
STEP 7 Stitch the triple stitch (this will strengthen the seams).

Remove the hoop from the machine and cut out the horse leaving ¼ inch seam. (Make sure you clip the corners).

Turn the body out the right way (we used a chop stick to push out the ends).

Stuff the horse.

Hand sew or glue the seam closed.

Cut through the loops of the mane and the tail. Make sure the threads are even and if you want the mane or tail shorter just
trim the threads shorter.

Attach the legs.

Use a strong yarn and a needle with a large eye.

Mark on the horse where you would like the centre of the legs thigh to be placed.

Start with the front legs.

Knot your thread and push the needle through one side of the pony’s body at your desired leg location. Go
right through the body and out the other side at the matching location. Then push your needle through the leg
for the other side of the horse and then through your button (If this is going to be for a baby or toddler, do not use
the buttons, as these could be a choking hazard, you can attach the legs the same way just minus the
buttons). Then go back through the button and all the layers to the other side. When out the other side go through
the next leg and through the button for the other side. Repeat this until you feel both the legs are secure. When you
come out of the body the last time tie off your thread under the leg so it is not seen.
Repeat for the rear legs.

Attach the ears.

Your ears should be out the right way and ironed neatly.
Turn in the raw ends of the ears into the ears, make a small ‘pleat’ in the ear and hand sew the pleat in place from the
bottom of the ear. Now hand sew the base of the ears onto the horses head in your desired position as shown.

Your lovely horse is now finished. You can now style the horse’s mane and tail whatever way you want.

Enjoy!!!
