Coaching Observation

1. Description of Practice Session:

 List the date, time, coach, team and school you have selected to observe. What is your

relationship with this team or coach?

i. 3/26, 8:20 am-10:25am, Marty English, UNC football. I played four years here at

UNC but only was coached one year by Marty English

 Did the head coach utilize a practice plan for the observed session?

i. Yes

 Was it in writing?

i. Yes

 Did he/she use specific times for specific objectives?

i. Yes

 Obtain a copy of the written practice plan and include with your paper.

2. Did your coach use or outline any practice objectives for the observed session. If yes, what were

they? And if no, what practice objectives might he/she have used?

i. There isn’t quite an objective for the entire practice and they only one I could find

besides labeling drill is 3rd and 3rd-7 install. This means defense has third down

emphasis.

3. Description of demonstrations:
 Describe any skills that were presented or represented skill correction during the observed

practice.

i. English corrected a linebacker when he didn’t cover the RB on a cover 1 defense.

 Describe the demonstration.

i. It was during team pass which is a time in practice where the starting O goes against

the starting D but passing is only aloud. The running back in the back field went on

a chip and release route and when the chip occurred the linebacker took his eyes off

the RB and placed them on the QB. The RB released and caught the ball. English

knew what happened instantly without even having to watch the play. He said

“Lukeee” and Luke knew he messed up but did not know how. English went on to

calmly explain what’s supposed to happen.

 What arrangement/formation was used?

i. He stayed calm because he knows that yelling at this particular player will rile them

up.

 Was there an introduction, and what was it?

i. It was a funny long saying of the players name “Lukeee”

 Was there an explanation of the skill, and what was it?

i. Yes, the linebacker is to keep his eyes on him man until he cut blocks meaning he

has taken himself out of the play

 Did the coach relate the skill to any transfer of learning/previous learning?

i. I’m not sure if he spoke of a previous learned skill but he could have by talking

about keeping your eyes on the guard on a run play.

 Did the coach identify any relevant cues?

i. Yes, he used EYES

 Who demonstrated the skill?

i. Player on film
4. Summarize with an evaluation of the practice session.

 Was it organized?

i. Yes

 Did the coach use a written plan?

i. Yes

 Were the athletes attentive?

i. Yes, for the most part besides a little special teams

 How much time was spent on learning new skills?

i. 30 min of individual time where position coaches choose old drill or new skill

 How much time was allotted for practice?

i. 2 hours 5 minutes

 Were skills practiced under conditions similar to game or competition conditions?

i. Yes, lots of full team good on good periods

 How and what would you change to improve on this practice session?

i. Slowing the practice down at some points to calm and focus people. The practice is

ran 100mph making there be a lot of chaos. I think chaos is game like but perfect

practice make perfect.
