Class summary

In this class we’re going to look at detailing reinforcement

in concrete structures and moving from the traditional
method of 2D detailing to 3D detailing approach using
Autodesk, Inc., software.

We will take a look at the comprehensive tools in Revit

Structure software, and some third-party tools, to help
accelerate the design and detailing of reinforced concrete
structures.
Key learning objectives

At the end of this class, you will be able to:

Explore the capabilities of detailing reinforce concrete in Revit Structure.

Understand the concept of creating a fully detailed 3D reinforcement
concrete model.
See how you can experience your reinforcement design and detailing
before it’s built.
On conclusion of this class, attendees should have a better understanding
of basic reinforcement detailing tools in Revit.

Quick Poll
Poll:
 Where are you from?
 USA.
 Europe.
Asia. What is your job role?
 Engineer.
 CAD/BIM Manager
 Technician or Drafter.
Architect. (What you doing in this class?)

What do you currently use to detail RC?

 Hand Drawings.
CAD or other forms 2d detailing?
Any form of 3d detailing but not in Revit?
 Autodesk Revit?
From the Beginning!
Where it all started

In 1853 Francois Coignet a French industrialist in the nineteenth century,

was the first to use iron-reinforced concrete as a technique for
constructing building structures. He built the first four story house at 72
rue Charles Michels in the suburbs of Paris, from iron reinforced concrete.
Then in 1854 English builder William B. Wilkinson reinforced the concrete
roof and floors in the two-storey house he was constructing, which
demonstrate his knowledge of tensile stresses.

Move from pencils, pens and drawing boards to CAD

Why?

 Because you had to?

 Because you wanted to?
 No reason just because.

 To help increase the productivity.

Maybe even the quality of design.
 Speed: Produce drawings faster.
 Efficiency: Make designer/drafters more efficient?
Current Path
Outcome

Did it improve the way you work?

 By increasing the productivity?
 Quality of design?
 Speed?
Efficiency, by making the designers/drafter more efficient?

 Did it open new doors???

Or did you just continue doing what you always done?

CAD

Pros Cons

Can be more accurate than Slower??

hand-drawn drawings. Cost software and
 Automate the process. hardware.
 Faster??? Staff need training.
 Easier and quicker to edit.
 Reduce human error(s).

3D Rebar Modelling

 Reinforced Concrete in Revit.

 Why?
Because Revit has built-in rebar capability
 Can it be done?
Yes but only over the last few years
What real benefits does it have?
Can produce a fully detailed reinforced concrete model and
produce 2d drawings and bar bending schedule for fabrication

users only. (Revit version 8 or 9)
Wasn’t really usable until Revit 2014. As you couldn’t
schedule the bending radius correctly.
From 2013 onwards it’s gone from strength to strength.
