ePortfolio Signature Assignment: Lifelong Wellness Reflection

1. Of the information presented in class and/or as a result of fitness assessments, tracking

progress through exercise logs, goals, and/or other content what is the largest “take-away”
that you have gained from participation in this class? Why? Use specific examples and
references to course content.

My largest take-away are the goal-setting habits. I’ve never been one to really sit down, create
a goal, act on it, revise it, and see it through. When I’ve ever wanted something that should
have been a goal I just keep a mental tab open in my mind that’s always there to remind me
why I do certain things or what else I need to do to complete a goal. It’s very easy to get caught
up in life when things get busy and forget a goal when it’s just in your mind and it’s not written
down. Going through the SMART goal-setting forms and specifically setting goals for each
health-related component really helped me visually see what I wanted and it was easy to have
a copy to refer back on and not forget what I was trying to accomplish.

2. How do you plan to apply the new knowledge you have gained as a result of class
participation in your life’s journey? Why? Be specific in your future plans and why you
choose to implement them. Reflect on what you thought about Fitness and Lifelong
Wellness before you took this course and how you think about it now that you have
completed the course. Have any of your assumptions or understandings changed? Why?
What assignments/activities/readings were influential in this process? How will you
approach what influenced you differently in the future?

It has been very beneficial for me to read and learn about the most common health related
issues that the United States faces. And to find that all of our health-related concerns directly
correlate with our lifestyle. Eating whole nutritious foods and regular exercise is the biggest
contributor to living a long and healthy life. The readings for this class taught me WHY it’s
important to live healthy. It gave me an understanding as to what should be a priority and why
it matters. I fully believe that if I would have continued to live my life like I was before this
semester I would have easily shaved a good 10 years off my life and would have been just
another number add to the statistics. When this class first started I was would go to the gym
maybe once a week if I was lucky but I also knew this class was going to push me to get out and
workout more and that’s a huge part of why I took this specific class. Then I learned we were
going to be keeping a fitness/workout log every week for 9 weeks and I was kind of nervous to
see if I could hold up on my end. That exercise log ended up being a great tool for me to track,
log, keep track of how I was getting my exercise in. Because of that log I have adapted a new
habit of working out three times a week and that’s the number one takeaway. I plan on going
to the gym and exercising at the very least three times a week because I know I can, I’m already
in the habit, I enjoy it, and I want to push my body and see what else I am capable of.
3. In what ways does the knowledge and information gained (and applied) as a result of this
course relate or add to other courses you have taken or intend to take in the future? i.e.
other fitness courses, health courses, or any other meaningful connections that can be
made to specific courses. …and WHY? Make specific references to your work in this class
and in other courses. How did what you learned in other courses enhance what you learned
in Fitness for Life, and vice versa?

I have yet to take another health/fitness class but I definitely plan on it. In the future I plan on
taking Scientific Findings of Human Nutrition and courses like Human Evolution, Human
Origins, etc. I believe these courses relate to this Fitness for Life class in the way that those
other classes are about how humans evolved and where we came from. The most basic human
needs are to eat and then to have energy to move your body. From the earliest of times we’ve
needed to fuel our bodies with nutritious and filling whole foods. These classes also dive in to
how we adapted to our surrounding, how we evolved from what we consumed, to how we
evolved to our current state of being. Our bodies have needed to adapt through the thousands
of years to become the way they are to be able to perform and do what we need it to. Knowing
little tips and tricks to keep our body and mind happy and healthy will prolong our lives.
Knowing how to manage stress will lead us to live happier, with clear minds to make the best
decisions and the right choices.
