Artifact: Copyright Presentation

The Copyright Presentation was created in Multimedia & Web Development, ITEC 7445. The
presentation includes definitions, details, guidelines, and advice pertaining to the use of printed
or digital materials in the classroom for teachers and students. Completing the presentation
required a lot of research about copyright laws, fair use for students and teachers, and real-world
scenarios in the classroom.
The artifact demonstrates the ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical
uses of digital information and technologies. In preparing the artifact, research was conducted
on copyright laws, fair usage, and how such is applicable to the educational setting. Because
technology is embedded into our daily lives, knowing and understanding copyright laws within
teaching is even more important. There are specific limitations as it pertains to duplicating
material, including media, plagiarism, improper citations, and more that students and teachers
should be well informed on. Thus, delivering the presentation aligns with the standard for
modeling and facilitating a safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of digital information and
technologies.
This artifact required an extensive amount of research as it pertains to copyrighting and fair use.
I gained an immense amount of knowledge and skill surrounding the appropriate use of printed
sources, digital media, and other publications in and outside the classroom. My understanding of
fair use including purpose, nature of work, the amount, and market effect has also increased. I
feel equipped to lead professional development workshops on copyright laws for teachers and
support students. In the future, I would have liked to spend more time developing real world
scenarios that are more practical or based on student questions. I would have also included a
portion for questions/answers from the audience to make copyright laws more applicable and
personal based on each situation. Furthermore, I would have included student samples to show
correct and incorrect usage of materials.
The completion and presentation of this artifact was critical for my professional growth and the
development of my colleagues. The content has a direct impact on school improvement as it
increased awareness and knowledge of copyright laws, fair use, and the application of both
within the educational setting. The real-world scenarios served to provide solutions for common
issues. The presentation opens the door for conversation and areas of improvement when it
comes to how teachers copy materials and student usage of media and other items for
assignments. The impact can be assessed through a survey, additional follow-up conversation
during professional learning communities, self-reflection, and teacher feedback on student
assignments following the presentation.
