CHAPTER I

I.I Introduction

In this chapter, researcher present some points related to the research. They are
background of the study, formulation of research problem, purpose of the study,
significance of the study, scope and limitation, formulating of hypothesis and definition of
the key terms.

A. Background of the study

English lesson is taught in almost all levels of education, starting from elementary
school level to university level. It aims to create people who are able to competence in
international world and develop relationship with other countries. In English, there are four
components of language skills covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Talking
about the four language skills in English lesson, it will be never far from vocabulary ability.
Because without a good vocabulary ability, someone will be difficult to speaking or even
understand a short text.

A good vocabulary ability is one of the most important aspects in learning foreign
language because the ability of the language learners to read and to comprehend the subject
is relatively determined by their vocabulary ability. Having a lot of vocabulary helps
learners to express their ideas precisely. The use of dictionary is very helpful for students
since they can find any kinds of words they need. Generally, there are two kinds of
dictionary, namely paper dictionary and electronic dictionary (e-dictionaries).

In modern era, students can use Smartphone that can download many social media
applications and supporting applications of student learning in schools such as dictionaries
application , books application, a collection of formulas lessons etc. Because it is very easy
to carry anywhere and simple. In contrast to the heavy book dictionary, and the use of a
book dictionary nowadays already considered old. The use of an dictionary application by
phone can help to improve their vocabulary mastery. Just simply download the dictionary
with the Smartphone used students only find words they do not understand in their
dictionaries without having to memorize.
From there researchers want to use dictionary application to improve the students'
vocabulary can make it easier for student learning. Besides being easily accessible.
Students only need to download applications only, then they can easily use them to support
student learning, helping to find difficult vocabulary. Memorizing new words that they do
not understand can be interesting and they can find new words that they can memorize
unlimited only in the word in the course of the lesson using electronic dictionary. From the
explanation the author considers using an dictionary application is a good method to use to
improve students' vocabulary.
I choose kamusku dictionary application as the media because this media is one of
the most popular and usefull in english learning. From this application, we can now all of
about the meaning in vocabulary just from smartphone. Besides, students in senior high
school may have this application in their smartphone. So, it interesting and easier for
student to teach vocabulary.
Based on the description above, I am interested in conducting studies entitle “The
Effectiveness Of Using Kamusku Application To Improve Vocabulary Ability in First
Grade Students of MAN 3 BLITAR”

B. Formulation Of The Research Problem

Concerning the background of the study, thr writer formulates the problem of the study as
follwed :
1. How is the students vocabulary before being taught by using Kamusku dictionary
application?
2. How is the students vocabulary after being taught by using Kamusku dictionary
application?
3. Is there significant differences in the students vocabulary taught before and after
being using Kamusku dictionary application?
C. The Purpose Of The Study

1. To know the students vocabulary before being taught by using Kamusku dictionary
application.
2. To know the students vocabulary after being taught by using kamusku dictionary
application.
3. To identify the significant differences in the students vocabulary before and after
being taught using kamusku dictionary application.

D. Significance Of The Study

The researcher hopes that result of this study give contribution for:

1. The school
It can improve the school’s education quality, especially in English improvement.
2. The English teachers
The result of this study can be used by the English teacher as reference in teaching
vocabulary.
3. The students.
The use kamusku dictionary application can make the students are more enjoyable
in learning. Thus, it can improve and raise their vocabulary ability.

E. Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of this study will focus on first grade of senior high school and student’s
vocabulary mastery. The researcher limits the study only with the effect of using kamusku
dictionary application content. Therefore, the researcher limits the vocabulary study the
research paper only on using kamusku dictionary application as a way in teaching learning
vocabulary.
In this part, there is some explanation from the title mentioned in the previous
items. The title is “The Effectiveness Of Using Kamusku Application To Improve
Vocabulary Ability in First Grade Students of MAN 3 BLITAR”
F. Definition of Key Terms

The definitions of key terms are as follows:

1. Effectiveness
In Oxford Learner’s Pocket dictionary (2003:138), Effectiveness is
producing the result that is wanted or intended. The meaning of effectiveness in this
study is there is any significant difference score in the student’s vocabulary ability
before and after being taught Using Kamusku Application.
2. Vocabulary
Vocabulary is one of the most important things in languages. It is a basis necessary
for the students who want to study English. Where, vocabulary is the important role
in learning of language
3. Kamusku dictionary application
Kamusku dictionary application can download by Smartphone that It can translate
words, sentences and web pages between any combination of our supported
languages. We hope to make information universally accessible and useful,
regardless of the language in which it is written.
CHAPTER II

II.I Literature Review

A. Kamusku Dictionary Application

The use of dictionary is very helpful for students since they can paper dictionary
and electronic dictionary. Dictionary Application can be by either online data and can also
be available as apps for smartphones is offline dictionary. Dictionary can be efficiently
used to facilitate reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition for adult learners of a
second or foreign language (Aldosari & Mekheimer, 2010).

Besides, the use of Kamusku dictionary Application is important in teaching and

learning language since it can make students more interested and motivated in learning the
language. Furthermore, according to Zarei And Gujjar (2012), there are many advantages
of using Dictionary Application in teaching vocabulary, such as Kamusku Dictionary
Application are light, compact and faster than any paper dictionary, Kamusku Dictionary
Application provide users or students with authentic recorded voice facilities for better
pronunciation and provide access to large amounts of data, and psychologically, dictionary
apps are prestigious and stylish. Thus, the researcher thought that the use of Kamusku
Dictionary Application was more effective than paper dictionary in improving students’
vocabulary ability.

The use of an dictionary is popular for learning activities can help to facilitate the
learning process of students, and can help students to find new vocabulary in learning
English. Because nowadays students need a short time to find or find difficult vocabulary.
So students do not need to take a lot of time to search for difficult vocabularies with
Kamusku dictionary application and can help them to improve their knowledge of English
vocabulary.

B. Vocabulary

Vocabulary is one of the most important things in languages. It is a basis necessary for
the students who want to study English. Where, vocabulary is the important role in learning
of language. In order to give a clear explanation about vocabulary there is some of
definition according to master of English:

According to Roget (1980:1036). Vocabulary is a list of words often defined or

translated, all the words of language and specialized which are indigenous to a particular
field, subject, trade or subculture. Richard and Remand said that vocabulary is component
of language proficiency and provides much of the basis for how well students speak, listen,
read and write. Hatch and Brown (1995:1) define that vocabulary is a list of words for a
particular language or a list or set of that individual speakers of language might use.

According to Hindmarsh R (1980), Vocabulary is a core component of language

skills and provides many foundations for some good learner speaking, listening, reading
and writing. According to Soedjito in tarigan (1994: 447)Vocabulary is all words
contained in one language. According to Penny Ur. 1991 A Course in language Vocabulary
(vocabulary) is a word taught in a foreign language, so if a new language vocabulary is
considered vocabulary if the vocabulary is from a foreign language.

From these definitions, the writer concludes that vocabulary is number of word or
phrases which has meaning that are used in spoken or written language. Vocabulary
knowledge is often viewed as a critical tool for second language learners because a limited
vocabulary in a second language impedes successful communication, Underscoring the
importance of vocabulary acquisition, (Schmitt;2000). It seems that students very little
effort to deal with their problems about newly learned words when technology is involved
(Meara, 1978).

Learning vocabulary is one of the first steps in learning a second language, but a
learner never finishes vocabulary acquisition. However the students do not have enough
knowledge about the vocabulary learning techniques and they have difficulty in dealing
with this problems themselves.

C. Using Kamusku Dictionary Application as Media To Improve The students

Vocabulary.
In English lesson, there are four components of language skills covering listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. Talking about the four language skills in English lesson, it
will be never far from vocabulary ability. Because without a good vocabulary ability,
someone will be difficult to speaking or even understand a short text. A good vocabulary
ability is one of the most important aspects in learning foreign language because the ability
of the language learners to read and to comprehend the subject is relatively determined by
their vocabulary ability. Having a lot of vocabulary helps learners to express their ideas
precisely. The use of dictionary is very helpful for students since they can find any kinds of
words they need.

The students can use Smartphone that can download many social media applications
and supporting applications of student learning in schools such as kamusku dictionary
application, electronic books, a collection of formulas lessons etc. Because it is very easy to
carry anywhere and simple. The use of an electronic dictionary can help to improve their
vocabulary ability.

From there researchers want to use electronic dictionaries to improve the students'
vocabulary and make it easier for student learning. Besides being easily accessible.
Students only need to download applications only, then they can easily use them to support
student learning, helping to find difficult vocabulary. Memorizing new words that they do
not understand can be interesting and they can find new words that they can memorize
unlimited only in the word in the course of the lesson using dictionary application. From
the explanation the author considers using an dictionary application is a good method to
use to improve students' vocabulary ability

C. Previous Study
The previous study that have been used by researcher are :

The first study was conducted By Yavuz Yildirim (2009) From Semarang State
University “ the effectiveness of using english dictionary to improve students’ vocabulary
mastery. A case of year eleven students of semesta senior high school 2009. This study was
conducted by case study and different in context.
The second study was conducted by Emanuel Dembo with the title is “The Effect Of
Google Translate To Enhance The Students' Vocabulary Mastery in SMP Darmayadi
Makassar” the study was conducted by google translate as the media.

This research has some similarities and differences between previous studies. The
similarity both of them is they are use same to improve the vocabulary ability . While, the
differences are they use dictionary media in different education level, school, research
design,. So, the writer will be conduct the present research with entitled “The
Effectiveness Of Using Kamusku Dictionary Application To Improve Vocabulary
Ability in First Grade Students of MAN 3 BLITAR”
CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHOD

This chapter presents the research method. It focused the method used in conducting this
study which covers research design, data and data source, variable, method of collecting
data and research instrument, validity and reliability, trying out instrument, method of data
analysis, and hypothesis testing.
A. Research Design

Before conducting research the researcher should indentified what the kind of the
research and need to make plan how the research will be conducted. The researcher need to
decide the research problem.

This study will conduct in experimental research design to know the effectiveness
of using electronic dictionary to improve student’s vocabulary ability in the first grade
students of MAN 3 BLITAR. In experimental, the researcher needs to know the cause
effect between two variables. The effectiveness of using kamusku dictionary application as
an independent variable and student’s vocabulary as a dependent variable. This study will
used pre-experimental research design using quantitative approach with one group pretest-
posttest design. ." This study used pre-experimental because it does not have random
assignment of subject to group or other strategy to control extraneous variable (Ary,
2010:203-204). That is why in this study the researcher just take one group or class and
uses pre-test and post-test to see the result of the treatment. That involves three steps:
administering a pre-test measuring the dependent variable, applying the experimental
treatment using dictionary application to the subject and administering a post-test again
measuring the dependent variable.
B. Population, Sampling and Sample
 Population
The population of this research is the whole students of the first grade students of
MAN 3 BLITAR in the academic year 2017-2018 that consist of seven classes. The total
population of the first grade at MAN 3 BLITAR in the academic year 2017-2018 consists
of 300 students. After determining the population, the writer takes the sample to be the
representative of the population.

 Sampling

Sampling is a process of selecting a number of the students who will be represent from
the large group. To determining the one group of sample, the writer used purposive
sampling. Purposive sampling is a type of nonprobability sampling where the researcher
consciously selects subjects for addition in a study so as to make sure that the elements will
have certain characteristics pertinent to the study. Purposive sampling is sample which is
taken because the researcher believes that X-B could give sufficient information. The
researcher uses purposive sampling. So, the researcher believe that X-B class of MAN 3
Blitar can give sufficient information.

 Sample

Sample is a group of subject or participant (students) is chosen from the populations

to be a representative (Fraenkel and Wallen, 2009:90). It means that a good sample must
be representative of the entire as possible, so that the generalization of the sample as true as
population. To take a sample the writer use purposive sampling where the researher choose
X-B class to be a sample that consist of 38 students, there are 15 male and 23 female at
MAN 3 Blitar in academic year 2017/2018.

C. Research Variable

Variable is a everything that will become that object of research o influencing. There are
two kinds of variables, they are:
 Independent variable (x)
Independent variable is a variable in which is observer the side effect. Independent
variable can appear and exist by itself without any other supported. In this study, the
Independent variable is using kamusku dictionary application.
 Dependent variable (y)
Dependent variable is a variable that emerge in function relationship influenced by
independent variable. Dependent variable in this study is students’ vocabulary.

D. Research Instrument And Method Of Collecting Data

In this study, instrument is a tool for collecting data. The data may be different from
one to another. The research instrument may be in the forms of test. The researcher
will use a test to collect data. Test is examination of students knowledge or aptitude.
Test will be done before treatment and after treatment.

Method of collecting data deals with how the researcher will get the data. The data
in this study are collected by administering test. Test is the method of measuring
person’s ability or knowledge, in a given domain. This test used to measuring
students’ vocabulary ability before and after taugh by using kamusku dictionary
application.

E. Validity and Reliability

1. Validity
The validity of test as extent to which it measures what is is supposed measure
and nothing else (Heaton: 1989). To measure whether the test has a good validity,
the researcher analyzed the test from content validity and construct validity. In
experimental research, the researcher had to check validity and reliability of the
instrument. Validity (in testing) is the degree to which a test measure what it is
supposed to measure, or can be used successfully for the purpose for which it is
intended (Richard, 1992:296). According to Brown, 2004:22 was quoted by
Isnawati, 2011:16 validity is the extent to which inferences made from assessment
result are appropriate, meaningful and useful in terms of the purpose of the
assessment.

a) Content Validity

A test is said to have content validity is its contents constitutes a representative

sample of language skills, structures, ets being tested. In order to judge whether or
not the test has content validity, we need a spesification of the skills or structure
being tested. A comparison of test spesifiacton and test content is basis for
judgment for content validity. The researcher made this test based on the course
objective in the syllabus of first grade of MAN 3 Blitar. Therefore, this is valid in
term of content validity.

b) Face validity
Face validity if it looks as it measures what it is supposed measure. For example, a
test which pretended to measure pronunciation ability but which did not require the
test-takers to speak might be through to lack face validity. This is true even if the
test is constructing and criterion-related validity can be demonstrated. Face validity
is hardly a scientific concept, yet it is very important. A test which does not have
face validity may not be acceptable by test-takers, teachers, education authorities,
and employers. The researcher used face validity by consulting with the advisor and
teacher.
c) Construct Validity
The construct validity of test which is capable of measuring certain spesific
characteristic in accordance with a theory of language behavior and learning. Based
on the theory above, in the test the researcher asked the students to answer the
multiple choices based on congratulating and complimenting to measure the
student’s vocabulary mastery therefore, valid in term of construct validity.

In this test the researcher, give the multiple-choice test to measure students’ ability in
vocabulary mastery. The researcher made this test based on the course objectives in the
syllabus of first grade of MAN 3 Blitar. Therefore, this test is valid in term of content
validity.

2. Reliability
The reliability of the test is its consistency result of the test. Thus, reliability is a
measure of accuracy, consistency, dependability or fairness of scores resulting from
administration or particular examination. Reliability is necessary characteristic of
any good test for it to be valid. A test must be reliable as a measuring instrument.

F. Technique of Data Collection

When we talk about the kind of methods and data, actually it is quite same when we
talk about doing evaluation. It has the purpose to get data and then it can be measured by
the researcher. The data collecting method is the method to obtain the data in the research.
The aim of the data collecting in conducting scientific research was to get material that
needed by the research. The researcher collect the data from the students’ score of pre-test
and post-test. The researcher gave students pre-test to know the students’ descriptive
writing ability before the researcher give treatment. Researcher give post-test to the
students after the researcher giving treatment. The result of pre-test and post-test and then
the researcher compare them.

G. Techniques of Data Analysis

Data analysis is a time consuming and difficult process, because typically the
researcher faces massive amounts of field notes, interview transcripts, reflections, and
information from documents to examine and interpret (Ary, 2002:465). The data obtained
from research result is the results of student’s test that were analyzed quantitatively.
Quantitative analysis was done using statistics which is called statistical analysis or
inferential statistics. The quantitative data of this research in analyzed using statistical
computation. This technique was used to find the significant difference on the students’
vocabulary ability after being taught by using Kamusku Dictionary Application.
The researcher used T-test according to Ary(2006:195) with the following formulation:

MD
t
( D) 2
D  N
2

N ( N  1)

Where:
t : the value of Tcount
MD : average difference
∑D2 : different score squared then summed
(∑D)2 : different score summed then squared
N : number of samples

H. Hypothesis Testing
The hypothesis of this study was as follow:
1. If T-Test score is bigger that T-table, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It
means that there is different score to the first grade before using Kamusku Dictionary
Application and after using Kamusku Dictionary Application Content. The difference is
significant.
2. If T-Test score is smaller than T-table, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that
there is no different score to the first grade before using Kamusku Dictionary Application
Content and after Using Kamusku Dictionary Application. The difference is not significant.
