Change within Iran Politics

- Some think that the threat was created through Iran’s nature in its regime.

- Shah was anti- communist and the United States viewed their gov’t as a “bulwark”

against the Soviet Union expanding.

- U.S. has accused the Iran regime of “widespread corruption.”

- Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamen’i is the supreme leader and he was born 1939. He believes

in ideas calling the regional issues a “cancerous tumor.”

- The council of Guardian’s terms last for six years and there are six Islamic jurists

appointed bu the Supreme leader.

- Expediency council resolves the legislative disagreements between the Majles (who

confirm the six selected lawyers) and the COG.

- There are four security organs:

o The Islamic revolutionary Guard Corps

o Law Enforcement Forces

o Ministry of Interior

o Ministry of Intelligence and Security

These four forces allow parallel balance between power.


- Human rights practices: the criminal procedure code made some reforms. They

eliminated death sentences for children convicted for drug related offense and protecting

the rights of the accused.

- Women can vote and run for office, but female candidates for president have always been

barred from running by the Council of Guardians.

- Policy elements and options: the Trump Administration has no publicly taken any policy

option “off the table” yet. Some options are being considered and others are found to be

threatening.
