Take Home Test : Deadline for Submission: 4 pm, Tuesday May 7th, 2019

This exercise contributes 10% to overall module grade and is individual.

Submission Instructions
 Solutions should be submitted electronically via SurreyLearn in one file.
 Only the latest submission file will be graded, earlier submissions will be automatically
overwritten. Hence all the solutions need to be in one file when submitted.
 Submissions should be either pdf or word.
 Handwritten solutions are ok - illegible solutions will be marked wrong.
 Submissions after the deadline will incur a 10% reduction for every day late.
 After 3 days late (30% reduction) a zero mark will be recorded.

Question 1.

Two engineers Francis and Bailey are happily riding in a boat. Together, the boat and
passengers have a weight force of 4900 N (where 1 N = 1 kg·m·s-2). The motor of the boat
exerts a constant force of 300 N and the resistance, 𝑅 of the water is proportional to the
speed, say 𝑅 = 𝑘𝑣 where 𝑘 = 10 N·s·m-1.

Set up the differential equation for speed at a certain time 𝑣(𝑡) using Newton’s second law,
i.e. 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 × 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒.

Assuming that the boat starts from rest find an expression for 𝑣(𝑡).

What is the maximum speed (𝑣∞ ) that the boat will practically travel i.e. after a sufficiently
long time?

Bailey is thinking about what would happen if they had more people in the boat and Francis
is thinking about a more powerful motor. What implications do these changes have on the
speed of the boat?

Question 2.

A particle is moving on a straight line so that its magnitude of acceleration is a quarter that of
its velocity. Initially, the particle’s distance from the origin is 2 m and velocity is 4 m ·s-1. Find
how far the particle has travelled and its velocity after 5 s. What do you expect to happen
with the same initial conditions if the magnitude of the acceleration is more than the velocity?
Justify your response.

Question 3.

A well-stirred cylindrical tank contains a volume V of liquid. The flow rate of the liquid into
and out of the tank is 𝑄. The concentration of a dilute, inert tracer in the feed stream is 𝐶𝑓 ,
which is a function of time, 𝑡. A differential equation describing the variation of the
concentration of the tracer in the tank, 𝐶, can be derived as:

𝑉 𝑑𝐶
= 𝐶𝑓 − 𝐶
𝑄 𝑑𝑡

The concentration of the tracer in the tank at 𝑡 = 0 is zero. The concentration of the tracer at
the feed inlet (𝐶𝑓 ) varies with time as

𝐶𝑓 = 0 when 𝑡 < 0

𝑡
𝐶𝑓 = 𝛽 𝑡 when 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 𝑡𝑖
𝑖

𝐶𝑓 = 𝛽 when 𝑡 > 𝑡𝑖

Where 𝑡𝑖 is some value of 𝑡 and 𝛽 is a constant.

(a) Sketch the variation of 𝐶𝑓 with 𝑡 and explain what this means practically for
different values of 𝑡𝑖 and 𝛽.

(b) Find expressions for 𝐶(𝑡) for the different values of 𝑡.

(c) Comment on the result for different values of 𝑡 and justify your results from (b).
