How does school and work affect sleep?

For our research project, we decided to research the effect of school and working on

sleep. We came up with seven questions to ask fellow classmates to help us gather our

information, and those questions were; Gender, what year you are in school, how many credits

are you taking this semester, the average number of hours you sleep per night, do you work

outside of school, if so, what days of the week do you work, and lastly how many hours per

week do you work. The tool that we used to collect our data was Google doc forms. We were

able to gather 88 responses from our fellow classmates which consisted of 66 female

participants, and 22 male participants. Our results ranged from freshman to graduate students.

In graph one you see the results to which gender works the most based on the questions

asked in the survey. By looking at the graph you can see that in each day of the week more

females worked than males. This result is due to the fact there were 66 females that conducted

the survey compared to the 22 males that participated. The gray line represents the overall

popularity of this question and you see that weekends were when students of both genders

seemed to work the most.

In graph two you will see the days of the week that students worked based on their year

in school. When looking at the graph it is clear the freshman works the most out of all of the

grade levels. Also, you can see that Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were when most students

worked in all the grade levels. This may due to the high number of credits that the students of

each year in school are taking this semester.

Graph three shows the average hours of sleep that students get based on their year in

school. By looking at the graph you can see that each grade level is close when it comes to hours

of sleep, but seniors get the most. This may be due to the fewer amount of credits that seniors

must take compared to other grade level. Also, as you can see graduates get the least amount of

sleep compared to the other grades.

In graph four you will find the average amount of hours that students work based on what

year they are in school. It is clear that seniors work more than any other grade level that was

tested. Another, part to notice is that freshmen work the least which may be because of their

number of credits compared to the senior level students.

Graph five answers the overall question that asked students if they work while in school

and if so what day of the week do they work. As predicted the yes category had the highest and

as we saw in graph two most students tend to work more on the weekends than on weekdays,

which is most likely due to their school work load.

Graph  5

The last graph based on our survey shows the average amount of credits the students take

based on their year in school. As you can see in the chart freshmen and sophomores are closest

for most credits being taken. This leads the results back to why freshmen and sophomores work

less which is because of their high number of credits. Most of their time seems to be put into to

school rather than work like the senior group of students.

Graph  6

Based on our results from the survey it is clear that students lack sleep due to work or

school. Where the lack of sleep comes from varies between the year in school of each student

that participated in the survey. One question that still remains after completing this research

would be if the senior who work the most hours have full time or part time jobs due to their

lower number of credits and high number of work hours. If we could change one thing about this

project, it would be to focus on just one factor in order to get more direct results instead of

having to compare both school and work. By changing this it would allow are data to be more

organized and easier to compare as well.
