User Interface Module Product Manual Doc #810-5021-01 Rev B

1. Introduction
This document defines the operational specifications, instructions, and safety considerations for the use of the Bayer
User Interface Module (UIM). The User Interface Module is designed specifically for use with the Bayer
Corporation’s ADVIA Centaur, i.e. Blood Analyzer. Although the ADVIA Centaur is used in a variety of medical
environments the User Interface Module is not designed for direct patient connected applications.

2. General
The User Interface Module is a highly reliable, SPARC based processing platform. It is designed to mount vertically
onto the side of the ADVIA Centaur. Two horizontal slide rails are used to secure the User Interface Module to the
ADVIA Centaur.
Power for the unit is derived from the ADVIA Centaur and may be either 50Hz or 60Hz, single phase, from 90V-
264VAC. To prevent accidental disruptions in the main input power by the user, the User Interface Module was
designed without external On/Off switches. Primary power is applied to the User Interface Module when
commanded On or Off by the ADVIA Centaur. This remote connection is made through a DB9 connector on the
rear of the User Interface Module. This connector provides all on/off control from the ADVIA Centaur.

The User Interface Module is easily removed from the ADVIA Centaur by releasing the two securing nuts on the
back of the User Interface Module and sliding the unit forward.

3. Product Description
The User Interface Module contains the following features:

• Utilizes an UltraSPARC IIi, 360MHz processor or a 440MHz processor.

• Contains 128Mbytes EDO DRAM.
• Auto-sensed 10BASE-T or 100BASE-T Ethernet.
• Two Ultra-wide SCSI buses, one internal, one external.
• Parallel port, P1284-compliant, with ECP and EPP.
• Two high speed serial ports.
• Interface for SUN keyboard and mouse.
• 8 Mbyte video card.
• Audio board
• One 12/48 speed DVD-ROM
• One 3.5”, 1.44Mbyte floppy drive
• One 36Gbyte Hard drive

4. Precautions
The User Interface Module contains precision electromechanical components. The system requires reasonable care
in its installation and use.

Do not place items on top of the unit when it is installed. The mounting rails are designed to support the
∅ User Interface Module only.

Do not attempt to open the system for service without proper training. Removing the cover may expose you
∅ to harmful electrical voltages.

√ Keep the area around the User Interface Module clean and free of dust.

Care should be taken to ensure that the ventilation on the front of the unit is not restricted. Cooling airflow
√ through the unit is from front to rear.

5. Software
A Solaris Operating System software license is not required since the Bayer Corporation has their own Right To Use
(RTU) agreement with Sun Microsystems. Application software, to include SUN Solaris, is loaded onto each system
for Bayer prior to shipment. All software installation procedures have been developed by Bayer Diagnostics
Corporation. Changes to the system boot configuration must be approved by Bayer Diagnostics Corporation’s
software engineering group.

6. Components

6.1 Motherboard
The User Interface Module contains a SUN Ultra AXI SPARC motherboard with a 360Mhz 256KB cache
or a 440MHz 2MB cache CPU module. The motherboard includes two RS-232 compatible serial ports,
one IEEE1284 compatible parallel port, a keyboard/mouse port, a 10/100 baseT ethernet port, an internal
SCSI and floppy connection, an external SCSI connection, and three PCI expansion slots.
All jumpers on the motherboard are set to the Sun factory default positions with the exception of J3303, the
remote power control jumper. The motherboard is populated with 128Mbytes of EDO DRAM.

6.2 Hard Drive

The hard drive is a 36.7Gbyte fast wide SCSI drive. A green LED is provided on the front of the User
Interface Module to provide the user SCSI bus activity information. Additional information on the hard
drive can be obtained by referring to the hard drive manual.

6.3 Floppy Drive

The Floppy drive is an industry standard 3.5”, 1.44Mbyte drive. Additional information on the floppy drive
can be obtained by referring to the specifications for Teac floppy drives.

6.4 DVD-ROM Drive

The DVD-ROM drive is a Toshiba 12/28 speed, SCSI interface. Additional information on the DVD-ROM
can be obtained by referring to the specifications for the Toshiba DVD-ROM drives.

6.5 Video PCI card

The User Interface module contains an 8Mbyte PCI video card.

6.6 Audio PCI card

The audio board provides an internal connection for a speaker. Additional information on the Audio board
can be found in the specifications section.

6.7 Medical Power Supply

The Power Supply is an ATX, auto-ranging power supply rated to 180 watts. The power supply contains an
internal fan for cooling its components. Additional information on the Power Supply can be found in the
specifications section.

6.8 Power Control Interface

The chassis also has an additional DB9 connector on the rear panel in addition to those contained on the
motherboard. This is for the Power Control Interface. The Power Control Interface is used to remotely
control power ON and OFF. To facilitate remote operation, J3303 is factory set for remote operation.

6.9 2U enclosure
The enclosure is 3.5”H x 17”W x 18.5”D. It contains all components listed in this section. One additional
PCI slot is available in the rear of the unit. External wiring connections to the enclosure are retained by the
use of either jackscrews or cable clamps.

7. System testing
Each User Interface Module is powered up at room temperature for a minimum of 24 hours. The system is tested
utilizing SUN Microsystems VTS testing software. All components in the system are fully exercised during this 24-
hour burn-in period. If failures occur, the system is repaired and re-started for its entire 24-hour test period.

Bayer Diagnostics will be informed of repeated or excessive test failures of any system component or peripheral and
the corrective actions taken for reliability improvement.

9. Engineering Changes (ECO’s)

The Bayer Corporation will be notified prior to any Engineering Changes (ECO’s) that could affect the system
performance, regulatory status, or EMC emissions/susceptibility. No changes or alterations of the system
configuration and/or substitution of components shall be made without Bayer Corporations Engineering approval.

10. Regulatory Approvals

The User Interface Module is designed to meet all US, Canadian, and European safety and EMC regulations
pertaining to medical laboratory and Information technology equipment as defined in CSA C22.2 No.950, UL 1950,
IEC 950, EN60950, EN50082-1:1997, EN50081-1:1992, and EN55022 CLASS B.

The unit is designed to meet the European EMC requirements to Class B levels for residential, commercial and light
industry applications.

11. Installation Instructions

The User Interface Module is designed to operate in a vertical orientation. Operation in another configuration may
result in improper operation. PDSi does not recommend operation in any other configuration.

Carefully remove the User Interface chassis from its shipping container. Carefully slide the chassis onto the Blood
Analyzer and secure it using the two screws on the back of the unit.

Plug the power cord into the power input, the video cable into the video card, the keyboard into the keyboard jack
and the remote control interface into the DB9 connector.

Apply power to the User Interface and remotely turn ON the unit.

12. Maintenance
Periodically clean the outside of the User Interface enclosure with a damp cloth to remove any dust buildup. Use
only water to dampen the cloth and ensure excess water is removed and does not enter the enclosure.

13. Technical Support and Warranty

Due to potentially hazardous voltages contained within the Bayer User Interface Module, the User Interface Module
should be opened only by personnel experienced with electrical equipment. In the event of a malfunction, remove
the User Interface Module from the Blood Analyzer and return the unit to Bayer for repair.

Should you have any technical questions or issues that are not addressed in this manual or the SUN Microsystems
