model.

Description of Resource

This lesson is a language arts lesson from the Read Write Think website. This excellent resource

is designed to give instructors and students quality resources and practice exercises in reading

and language arts and is one of the MarcoPolo partners. It has a large collection of lesson plans,

student resources and web resources. This resource lists the Standards for English Language

Arts created by the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Council of

Teachers of English (NCTE). Each lesson plan listed on this site lists the IRA/NCTE standards

associated with the lesson.

ASSURE Analysis

Analyze Learners

The learners for this lesson are described as adolescent readers grades six to eight. Although the

lesson does not go into a great deal of information on this type of student, teachers should be

able to make the following assumptions about their learners. The learners will be both male and

female between the ages of twelve and fifteen. Students utilizing this lesson will come from a
wide variety of socioeconomic situations. The lesson assumes that teachers who use this lesson

will have students who possess the skills to succeed at this lesson. The lesson is designed for

students with various learning styles including verbal, visual and kinesthetic styles.

Stated Objectives

The lesson has a section which lists student objectives so students have an understanding of what

will be required of them when they complete this lesson. The student objective lists the audience

as the student; the behavior as writing an autobiography and describing events that happen in

their lives; the conditions are listed as using the alphabet and applying summarizing skills to

their entries; the degree provides a checklist for the students to assess their work. At the bottom

of the lesson you find the IRA/NTCE objectives that are covered with this lesson. The

objectives for this lesson fall into the cognitive domain.

Select Methods, Media and Materials

This lesson uses a combination of commercial material and self created material. The

commercial material includes the book Totally Joe by James Howe. The self created material

contains and example sheet to show students what is to be created and an example of the self

check sheet. The lesson uses a computerized alphabet organizer which will allow students of

enter material. The students will also need writing materials for this lesson. The media used in

this lesson will be worksheets, computer media, and written text. The method used in this lesson

call for incorporating different methods at different points throughout the lesson including

teacher led discussion, individual seat work, computer-based activities and student presentations.

The lesson is divided into two fifty minute sessions. Depending on a particular teacher’s needs,

the lesson might require some modification of the provided material.

Utilize Media and Materials

This lesson divides this section into several sections. The first section is preparation which gives

the teacher the instructions on previewing and preparing materials for use in the lesson. This

section also covers preparation of the learning environment. The second section breaks down the

instructions and activities covered in the lesson this is where the learning experience happens for

the students. These are broken down by the days needed for the lesson. The lesson also lists

additional web resources that are available for student and teacher use.

Require Learner Participation

During this part of the lesson the students will actively participate in creating the check list of

required elements for their project. The students will also use the computerized Alphabet

Organizer to create their alphabiography. Students will also write a letter to the teacher that will

accompany their alphabiography. Upon completion of the projects, students will be given the

opportunity to present their projects.

Evaluate and Revise

This section of the lesson allows the students to use the customized grading rubric created earlier

to evaluate their work. The lesson calls for constant evaluation of student work as it progresses

through the process. The lesson also calls for teacher evaluation and feed back on the students

work. Although it is not covered in the online lesson, teachers should also reflect on the process

that was used for possible improvement.
