There is a growing epidemic of HIV in the Philippines.

Demographics studies on HIV have been an

important part in addressing public health concerns. Demographics factors have been used to identify
risk populations. In the recent HIV registry 94% of newly diagnosed were male with the median age of
27 y/o.

There is also a big concern on treatment adherence. According to the DOH epidemiology bureau’s
Philippine HIV care cascade HIV adherence is very low only 48% are under the HIV care, only 32% of the
population are on ART, only 7% of the population are virally supressed.

Adherence to ART is crucial for the HIV program to succeed. The significance of the study is to determine
which demographics correlates to compliance and adherence. Low adherence is the strongest
determinant for morbidity and death second only to CD4 count. Identifing low adherence among
demographic groups should be adress by the government as part of their HIV control program.
