1. ABCDE is a light string whose end A is fixed. The weights W1 and W2 are attached to the
string at B & C and the string passes round a small smooth wheel at D carrying a weight
40KN at the free end E. In the position of equilibrium, BC is horizontal and AB and CD
Make angles 150° and 120° with horizontal.

2. Two cables which have known tensions are attached to the top of tower AB, A third cable AC is used
as a Guy wire as shown in fig.Determine the tension in AC if the resultant of the forces exerted at A by
the three cables acts vertically downwards.

3. Determine the magnitude and direction of F shown in Fig 1. So that particle ‘A’ is in equilibrium.

4. Determine the magnitude and angle and F so that particle shown in figure, is in
Equilibrium

6. Two identical rollers each of weight 2.5 KN rest in between an inclined wall and a vertical wall as
shown in Fig 12(a). Determine the reactions at the points of contact P, Q and R. Assume the wall thickness
to be smooth.

UNIT-2
1. Determine the reaction at the pin at A and in the cable shown in Fig.3 required to support the 300 kg
crate. Neglect the weight of the connecting rod AB.

2. Two cylinders, having weight WA = 2000 N and WB = 1000 N are resting on smooth inclined planes
having inclination 60o and 45o with the horizontal respectively as shown in Fig.4. They are connected
by a weightless bar AB with hinge connections. The bar AB makes 15 o angle with the horizontal. Find
the magnitude of the force P required to hold the system in equilibrium.

3. Two beams AB and CD are shown in figure. A and D are hinged supports B and C are rollers
supports.(i) Sketch the free body diagram p the beam AB and determine the reactions at the supports
A and B.(ii) Sketch the free body diagram of the beam CD and determine the reactions at the supports
C and D.

4. A force couple system acting on a rectangular plate is shown in figure below.

5.Replace the given system of forces acting on a plate ABCD shown in figure by a
Force-couple system acting at the point A.

6. A load of 3500 N is acting on the boom, which is held by a cable BC as shown in


figure below, the weight of the boom can be neglected.

7. Two cylinders of diameter 60mm and 30mm weighing 160N and 40N respectively are
placed as shown in figure. Assuming all the contact surfaces to be smooth, find the
reactions at A, B and C.

1.Steel forging consists of a 60 x 20 x 20 mm rectangular prism and two cylinders of diameter
20mm and length 30mm as shown in figure below .Determine the moments of inertia of the
forging with respect to the coordinate axes, knowing that the density of steel is 7850 Kg/m3 .

2. Find the moment of inertia of shaded area shown in Fig.9 about Ixx axis and Iyy axis.

3. Find the Product of inertia of a T section shown in Fig 5 about an axis passing

through its centroid.

4. Determine the polar moment of inertia of the section shown in Fig 5. Also find the radius of gyration
with respect to the polar axis.

5. Find the moment of inertia about 1-1 and 2-2 axes for the area shown in figure.

6. Determine the principle moments of inertia of the section shown in Fig

UNIT-4
1. A laminar flow is taking place in a pipe of diameter 200mm.The maximum velocity is 1.5m/s.Find
the mean velocity and radius at which occurs.Also calculate the velocity at 4cm from the wall of
the pipe.
2. The dynamic viscosity of an oil,used for lubrication between a shaft and sleeve is 6 paise.The shaft
is of diameter 0.4 m and rotates at 190rpm.Calculate the power lost in the bearing for a sleeve
length of 90 mm.The thickness of the oil film is 1.5mm.
3. A Newtonian fluid is filled in the clearance between a shaft and a concentric sleeve.The sleeve
attains a speed of 50cm/s,when a force of 40 N is applied to the sleeve parallel to the
shaft.Determine the speed if a force of 200N is applied.

5. Derive Hagen Poiseuille equation.

UNIT-5

1. Two blocks A and B of mass 50 kg and 100 kg respectively are connected by a string C which passes
through a frictionless pulley connected with the fixed wall by another string D as shown in figure. Find
the force P required to pull the block B. Also find the tension in the string D. Take coefficient of friction
at all contact surfaces as 0.3.

2. A block and pulley system is shown in Fig. 14(b). The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block
and the plane is 0.25. The pulley is frictionless. Find the acceleration of the blocks and the tension in
the string when the system is just released. Also find the time required for 100 kg block to come down
by 2 m.

3. Block ‘A’ weighing 1.5 kN rests on a horizontal plane and supports another block weighing 500 N on
top of it as shown in Fig. 15 (a). The Block B is attached to a vertical wall by an inclined string, which
makes an angle of 45o with the vertical. What should be the value of force P acting at an angle of 30 o
to the horizontal to the horizontal to cause the motion of the lower block to impend? Take µ = 0.28 for
all the surfaces.

4. ) A block of weight 2 kN kept on an inclined plane is acted upon by


0.5 kN horizontal force as shown in Fig. 15(a). The coefficient of friction
between the block and the plane are µs = 0.30 and µk = 0.25. Find
whether the block is in equilibrium or not. Also find the magnitude
and direction of the friction force.

5. A ladder of weight 1000N and length 4m rests as shown in figure below.

6. Two trains A and B leave the same station on parallel lines. A starts with a uniform
acceleration of 0.15m/s2 and attains the speed of 24 km/hour after which its speed
remains constant. B leaves 40 seconds later with uniform acceleration of 0.30 m/s2 to
attain a maximum of 48 km/hour, its speed also becomes constant thereafter. When will
B overtake A.
7. The equation of motion of a particle moving in a straight line with variable acceleration is
given by, s = 15t + 3t2 – t3, in which, ‘s’ is the distance measured in m and time ‘t’ is measured
in seconds. Calculate.
a The velocity and acceleration at start.
b The time, at which the particle attain its maximum velocity
c. The maximum velocity of the particle.
