1.1. Overview of the Current State of Technology

There is no recycling machine used by the city. The lack of the proper machinery

required for the task aids in the garbage woes the city is experiencing. The city must acquire

a new one to improve efficiency in the process of segregating and disposing garbage but in

order to have that an amount of money is required.

An open dumpsite has been utilized by the city for landfill. The land used by the city

has been under scrutiny for the past year, since its owners do not agree on the terms made by

the Government. The land is getting closer to being filled up. The city needs to find new land

to be used for another dumpsite.

Due to the people not segregating their waste, unsegregated garbage is not picked up

completely at home. Other materials that are still fit for reuse and recycle are thrown and get

mixed with the others thus adding to the amount of garbage produced and put into the

landfill.

With outdated methods and no proper disposal system, segregation is crucial for the

waste sorter. By proper segregation, recyclables return into product cycle and does not end

up on landfill. Thus, waste collection and recycling are efficient.

This study aims to provide knowledge to users about how to segregate and dispose

waste is an essential way to promote awareness in proper garbage segregation as improper

garbage segregation leads to vast amount of garbage.

1.2 Research Objectives

1.2.1 General Objective

To examine the garbage production and segregation practices of the people of

Brgy. Punta Taytay

1.2.2 Specific Objectives

 To collect data from 20 respondents regarding garbage production and segregation

through the use of guide questions

 To design a game world that resembles the chosen community, Brgy. Punta Taytay

 To discuss the three classifications of garbage: Biodegradable, Non-biodegradable,

and Recyclables by providing a tutorial before the actual game starts

 To identify the three major garbage produced by each household to estimate the

number of occurrences of garbage

 To analyze the applicability of Djikstra’s Algorithm to the game by analyzing the

parameters of the path from node to node

1.3 Scope and Limitations of the Research

There are three bins where garbage is classified as biodegradable, non-biodegradable,

and recyclables. Biodegradable trash includes leaves, fruit peels, and vegetables. The non-

biodegradable includes plastic bags, aluminum cans, styrofoam, and glass products.

Recyclable materials include plastic bottles, glass bottles, paper, and wood.

The researchers have decided to use the Dijkstra’s Algorithm as the path-finding

algorithm to find the shortest path from one house to another.

The study is implemented in a single player mode only. The study does not include

the selection of character. It has a fixed main character who is a boy.

1.4 Significance of the Research

The group has thought of better ways of using technology to address challenges faced

by the community particularly in environmental aspects. Through designing and building this

project, the group has searched for different ways to effectively solve computing problems by

using applicable algorithms.

The community will learn the process of classifying waste to make their streets

cleaner, to prevent health problems caused by hazardous waste, and to minimize air and

water pollution.

There are existing efforts related to promoting proper garbage segregation yet not all

are aware and practicing it. Because of that, the group would like to take part in promoting

awareness of garbage segregation through a mobile game application for it is widely used

nowadays.
