27th/28th April 2019 - 2nd Sunday of Easter
A couple of months ago someone asked in
our Insight session, “Why don’t we have
miracles anymore?”
I understand where the question is coming
from – the Bible is full of stories where God
manifests Himself through miracles. Even in
today’s reading we hear of how many who
were sick came crowding around Peter,
“and all of them were cured”, some by the
simple fact that Peter’s shadow fell on them!
The disciples saw Jesus, who died on the
cross just a few days previously, sitting on
the table and eating with them – Thomas
even got to touch the wounds on his hands
and side. However, our world seems to be
short of such miracles nowadays... or is it?
There are times where I imagine, what
would it be like if a person from 2000 years
ago were to travel through time and walk in
today’s world? I think he/she would feel
overwhelmed by how magical this world is,
and how miracles happen everywhere!
The blind can see (by the wonder of
spectacles, contact lenses, or eye surgeries).
The deaf can hear (thanks to hearing aids
and other implants).
The dumb can speak (just this week I read
an article that they’re working on a
technology that can read brain waves and
transform thought into speech for those
with speech impediments!)
The lame can walk (heard of prosthetics?)
The dead is raised to life (many of us gained
some power to do this when we learned to
perform CPR – and all those machines in the
emergency rooms helped of course)
People can bilocate (it never cease to amaze
me that I can be ‘speaking face to face’ with
my mum who is literally 10,000miles away).
Forget about walking on water – people are
flying now (how did they manage to get a
plane that heavy with hundreds of people
and suitcases off the ground???)
I can go on and on, but I think you get the
idea. Yes, we call all of this ‘science’ and
‘technology’. But why can’t God work
through science instead of miracles? When
Jesus performed miracles, it was to respond
to the needs of the people, not to show off
His power. I suppose by definition,
‘miracles’ are something that we can’t
explain. So it’s only natural that as humanity
grow in knowledge and skill, we come to
understand the workings of this world and
how to manipulate it better – and the
number of ‘miracles’ or unexplainable
things diminish. But the fact that we can
‘explain’ things or invent new technologies
does not discredit God’s desire to respond to
our needs. God works through science as
much as through miracles.
“Happy are those who have not seen and yet
believe,” Jesus said. Perhaps we have not
seen or touched him physically as the
disciples did, but the presence of the Risen
Christ is all around us, if we only open our
eyes to see these daily ‘miracles’ in our lives
and believe.

ADULTS (RCIA)
Congratulations to Talia who was received
into the Catholic Church and Valdemar on
receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in
the Easter Vigil Mass! Let us continue to
pray for them in their journey of faith.
FIRST COMMUNION PROGRAMME and
SUNDAY MORNING R.E. CLASSES
The Celebration of First Holy
Communion will take place at 2:00pm
on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May.
There will be rehearsal for all children and
parents on Wednesday, 1st May
at 4pm (for the 4th May group)
or 4.45pm (for the 5th May group).
We ask parents to ensure their children are
on time, both for the rehearsal and the
actual day of celebration.
Last Session: Sat, 11thMay 10am.
‘Sending Out’ Mass: Sun, 12th May at 2pm,
followed by party in Hume Hall.
CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME
The celebration of Confirmation will take
place on Saturday 11th May at 6pm
with Bishop John Sherrington.
There will be a rehearsal for all candidates
and their sponsors on Friday 3rd May 2019
at 5pm in the Church, Candidates and
Sponsors are asked to be on time for the
rehearsal and the actual day of celebration.
BAPTISM FOR INFANTS
If you would like to have your child
baptised on the 11th May or later, the next
session will be on Monday, 6th May at
7.30pm in the Parish Hall.

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO PILGRIMAGE

The Verbum Dei missionaries and friends

support young adults on an 8-day walking
pilgrimage (from Rome to Assisi) and
mission immersion experience with street
