PAGKAMAKATAO, PAGKAMAKADIYOS,
PAGKAMAKA-BAYAN, PAGKAMAKA-
KALIKASAN

Pagkamakatao, Pagkamakadiyos, Pagkamaka-Bayan, Pagkamaka-Kalikasan is a

summarization of the Good citizenship values. These four Filipino values are very familiar to us.
It is actually the national motto of the Philippines. it is derived from the four lines of the Pledge
of Allegiance, it was adopted on February 12, 1998 with the passage of Republic Act no. 8491,
the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, during the presidency of Fidel V. Ramos.

The motto has been the set of Filipino values with each of the four being connected to one
another. motto represents the duties of good Filipino citizens. Recall the Pledge of Allegiance.

It was included at the last part of the Pledge of Allegiance. We all know this since we
always recite Pledge of Allegiance every time there’s a flag ceremony in our schools usually
during Monday since elementary till now.
 The first one is the Pagkamaka-Diyos (Faith in Almighty God) where respect of life,
faith, order, work falls on. Filipinos have deep faith in God. We live intimately with religion.
Filipinos have deep faith in God. It enables us to genuinely accept reality in the context of God’s
will and plan. In Tagalog explanation, “sinusunod ang mg utos ng diyos. Kung ano ang nakasulat
sa banal na aklat”. We follow what’s written in our holy books. Qur’an in Islam and Bible in
Christian. To God whom we alternately thank and call upon for mercy or forgiveness. Prayer is
an important part of our lives.

Pakamaka-tao, where love, freedom, peace, truth and justice falls on. Pagkamaka-tao
(regards for others) means we deal with other as a fellow human being. We are open to others
and fell one with others. In Tagalog “tumutulong sa iba na mas iniisip yung ibang tao kesa sa
sarili niya. Na handing ipagtanggol ang karapatan ng ibang tao sa mundo”. It demonstrated in the
Filipino’s ability to empathize with others, in helpfulness and generosity in times of need or in
the practice of bayanihan or mutual assistance. It is manifested in a basic sense of justice and
fairness, and in corner with others. Pagkamaka-tao results in camaraderie and a feeling of
closeness one to another. It helps promote unity as well as sense of social justice.

Pagkamaka-bayan (patriotism), where unity, equality, respect for Law and Government,
patriotism, and promotion for common good falls on. It pertains to the love for nation, which
more emphasis on values and beliefs. It is based on affection for the country. It is an attachment
to a homeland. The love and adoration for the place where individual is born, brought up and
nation belongs to. It is an ideology based on the premise that an individual’s loyalty and devotion
to one’s country should come above the interest of others. In Tagalog explanation “ito ay
nagpapahiwatig ng positibong pag-uugali ng isang tao sa kanyang sariling bansa o sa kanyang
bayang sinalangan. Ito ay tumutukoy sa pagmamahal, paggalang at pagrespekto nang buong puso
sa ating bansa. Kabilang na rito ag pagtangkilik sa sariling atin at pagmamahal sa sariling wika”.
It gives more importance to unit by the way of cultural background, including language and
heritage.

Pagkamaka-kalikasan (love for environment), where concern for the environment and
care of creation falls on. Philippines is very rich in biodiversity. We are very rich in natural
resources. Small act can make a big difference. In Tagalog explanation, “Pag-aalga sa kalikasan,
pagtitipid sa paggamit ng tubig, hindi sinasayang ang mga papel na galing sa ating mga
kapunoan”. #Trashtag is trending right now in the Social Media platform where individual will
clean an certain area and document the before and after of that place. It is actually a good
challenge in Social Media since they were able to inspire others to love and care for their
environment.
