Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Describe how you could address Universal Design for Learning principles
to extend and support the learning experiences for all students.
Engagement: Students are engaged by choosing the character to make their timeline for.
Representation: Students background knowledge is activated as all the events in the novels build off things
they are currently learning or have learned in their Social Studies class just through a narrowed lense.
Action and Expression: Students will get the chance to choose which events are important enough to include.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students are given a list of nonfiction novels to choose from that give personal accounts of events that they
have been learning in Social Studies through the eyes of a young adult around their age. They will read it on
their own and complete activities provided by the teacher pertaining to the novel.

After they have completed the novel, students will be asked to create a timeline of 15 important events from
the characters life using Visme. These events should be accompanied with supporting images and include the
dates of when they occurred. The life and death of the character should be included, but all of the rest of the
events are up to the choosing of the student.

Reflective Practice: I think students will greatly benefit from seeing a list of events chronologically as it will
help them to better understand the journey of their character. I also think that these timelines will be a great
way to get other students interested in what the novel they are reading.
