Acalypha ‘Copperleaf’ (Acalypha wilkesiena Muell.-Arg.)


Acalypha wilkesiana is an evergreen shrub. It grows 3 m high and
spreads 2 m across. The stem is erect with many branches. They have
separate male and female flowers on the same plant. Copperleaf is
also grown indoors as a container plant. However, it must be
maintained in a warm, humid, bright environment.

Adelfa (Nerium oleander L.)

Adelfa is an evergreen shrub or small tree. It grows to 2–6


m (6.6–20 ft) tall, with erect stems that splay outward as
they mature. It is drought-tolerant and will tolerate
occasional light frost down to −10 °C (14 °F). Many
cultivars also have double flowers.

Bignai (Antidesma bunius (L.) Spreng.)


This is a variable plant which may be short and shrubby or
tall and erect, approaching 30 meters in height. The species
is dioeciously, with male and female flowers growing on
separate trees.

Bandera Española (Canna flacida Salisb.)


Bandera Española is an herbaceous perennial that can grow up to a height of
4 feet. Cannas perform best in sunny areas with moist, fertile soil. They can
tolerate partial shade. They are not drought tolerant.

Balatbat bilog (Licuala grandis H. Wendl.)


Balatbat bilog can be grown indoors in containers. Needs lots of water;
high humidity, light shade. It grows well in sandy loam soil or in lime stone.
Balatbat bilog withstand minimum temperatures to 29° F. However,
it grows in a protected area. Do not expose to heavy winds since it is a
understory rainforest palm.

Spiral Ginger cv. (Costus especiosus (J.Koenig) Smith)


Costus differs from the common ginger by having only one row of
spirally arranged leaves.The species reproduces vegetatively by
rhizome and birds disperse seeds when they feed on the fruits.
Flowering season starts after rainy season, October to December.

Caballero (Caesalpinia pulcherrima)


It is a shrub growing to 3 m tall. C. pulcherrima is the most
widely cultivated species in the genus Caesalpinia. It is a
striking ornamental plant, widely grown in domestic and public
gardens and has a beautiful inflorescence in yellow, red and
orange. It tolerates pruning well allows it to be planted in
groups to form a hedgerow; it can be also used to attract
hummingbirds.

Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis)

Bougainvilleas are thorny, woody vines growing anywhere


from 1 to 12 meters tall, scrambling over other plants with
their spiky thorns. The growth rate of Bougainvillea vary
from slow-growing to rapid, depending on the particular
variety. Bougainvillea tend to flower all year round in
equatorial regions.

P. conjugatum grows from near sea-level up to 1700 m altitude


in open to moderately shaded places. It is adapted to humid
climates. It is found growing gregariously under plantation
crops and also along stream banks, roadsides and in disturbed
areas.

Coronitas (Lantana camara)


Lantana has become popular in gardens for its hardy nature.
It is not affected by pests or disease, has low water
requirements, and is tolerant of extreme heat. It is a
favorite species of butterflies, and used in butterfly garden.
Wild species may have short, hooked prickles. Lantana
cultivars favored as ornamentals tend to have small
herbaceous stems.

Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia amoena)


Dieffenbachia plants can grow outdoors in tropical
climates, but specimens kept as houseplants must be kept
indoors during most of the year outside the tropics.

Fire Tree (Delonix regia)


It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of

flowers. In many tropical parts of the world it is grown as


an ornamental tree and in English it is given the name
Royal Poinciana or Flamboyant. It is also one of several
trees known as Flame tree. In addition to its ornamental
value, it is also a useful shade tree in tropical conditions,
because it usually grows to a modest height but spreads
widely.

Galamay-amo is a woody line growing 2 to 6 meters or
more.An epiphytic, or rarely a terrestrial shrub up to 10
m tall. Common in primary forests along streams at low
altitudes

It is widely grown as an ornamental plant


throughout the tropics and subtropics. The flowers are
large, generally red in the original varieties, and firm, but
generally lack any scent. Numerous varieties, cultivars,
and hybrids are available, with flower colors ranging from
white through yellow and orange to scarlet and shades of
pink, with both single and double sets of petals. The

flowers themselves are edible and are used in salads in


the Pacific Islands.
Hongkong Tree (Bauhinia blakeana Dunn.)
Bauhinia blakeana is an orchid tree of the genus Bauhinia with large thick leaves
and striking purplish red flowers. The fragrant, orchid-like flowers are usually 10
to 15 centimetres (3.9 to 5.9 in) across, and bloom from early November to the
end of March. The tree prefers a sheltered sunny position with good soil.
As it is
only known in cultivation, it can also be named as a cultivar: Bauhinia
'Blakeana

Calachuchi – pula (Plumeria rubra L. forma

rubra)
It grows as a spreading tree to 7–8 m (20–25 ft) high and wide, and is
flushed with fragrant flowers of shades of pink, white and yellow over
the summer and autumn. Plumeria rubra grows as a spreading shrub or

small tree to a height of 7–8 m (20–25 ft) and similar width. It has a thick
succulent trunk and sausage-like blunt branches covered with a thin grey
bark.

Calachuchi – put (Plumeria obtusa L.)- is a species of the genus Plumeria (Apocynaceae), native from
the Greater Antilles, northern Central America and southern Mexico. This large shrub or small tree
grows up to 8 metres (26 ft) tall.

Fukien Tea Tree or Philippine Tea Tree (Carmona


retusa)- is aspecies of flowering plant in the borage

family, Boraginaceae. Its specific epithet comes


from the Latin retusus (blunt), with reference to
the leaf apex. Growing to 4 m height with long
straggling, slender branches. It is deciduous during
the dry season.

Kamachile(Pithecellobium dulce) -is a species of


flowering plant in the pea family, Fabaceae that is native to
Mexico, Central America and northern South America. It is

introduced and extensively naturalised in the Caribbean, Florida, Guam and Southeast Asia like
Philippines. It is a tree that reaches the height of about
10-15m and it has spiny trunk.

Kamuning (Murraya paniculata)- commonly called


Orange Jessamine is a tropical evergreen plant bearing
small, white, scented flowers, which is grown as an
ornamental tree or hedge. It is a small, tropical,
evergreen tree or shrub growing up to 7 m tall. The plant
flowers throughout the year.

Large yellow bell (Allamanda neriifolia )- also known as


Golden Trumpet or Buttercup Flower, is a tropical shrubs or
vines belonging to the Apocynaceae family. Native to South
and Central America. Their year-round production of large,
bright flowers has made the large yellow bell popular
ornamentals. A woody, evergreen shrub with vigorous
growth, large yellow bell may reach a free-standing height of
2 metres or more. Their scent may be described as delicate
and fruity.

Narrow Leaf Helconia (Heliconia psittacorum) –is a


perennial herb native to the Caribbean and northern
South America. It is often cultivated as a tropical
ornamental plant.

Octopus Tree (Schefflera actinophylla)- is an evergreen


tree growing to 15 m tall. It has compound medium
green leaves in groups of seven leaves.

Pakong kalabaw (Nephrolepis biserrata-) an excellent


landscaping fern and a great addition to any tropical garden.
Lush symmetrical upright, erect fern leaf that grow 3 to 4 feet in
length. Clumps can easily be divided.

Palmera (Dypsis lutescens)- is native to Madagascar. It is a small to


medium-sized palm, growing to a height of 6 to 12 meters. It has
multiple stems emerging from the base. It is grown as an ornamental
plant in gardens in tropical and subtropical regions, and elsewhere
indoors.

Podocarpus (Podocarpus macrophyllus) - is a conifer in


the family of Podocarpaceae. It is the northernmost
species of the genus, native to southern Japan and
southern and eastern China. It is a small to medium size
evergreen tree, reaching 20 m tall.

Acacia (Samanea saman) - is a species of flowering tree in


the pea family, Fabaceae. Its range extends from Mexico
south to Peru and Brazil but it has been widely introduced
to South and Southeast Asia as well as the Pacific Islands
including Hawaii. It is a wide-canopied tree with a large
symmetrical crown. It usually reaches a height of 25 m and
a diameter of 40 m. The leaves fold in rainy weather and in
the evening, hence the name "rain tree".

Rhapis (Rhapis excelsa) also known as Broadleaf Lady Palm is a


species of probably native to southern China and Taiwan. It grows up
to 4 m in height and 30 mm in diameter in multi-stemmed clumps.

Red bottle – brush (Callistemon citrinus)-


It grows to between 1 and 3 metres in height. It can be
grown outdoors in warm, dry climates, with a minimum
temperature of 7°C. They thrive in well-drained soils rich
in organic matter and direct sunlight. Indoors, it will grow
well in normal room temperatures and low humidity.
However, it requires more sunlight than most
houseplants.

Sanchezia is a genus of the plant family Acanthaceae. It is


estimated to contain about 20 to 50 species. Members of this
genus are shrubs, rarely small trees or herbs, occurring in the
lowlands of tropical South and Central America.

Santan (Ixora chinensis) A shrub with many stems and


reaches up to 2 m tall. The plants possess leathery leaves,
ranging from 3 to 6 inches in length, and produce large
clusters of tiny flowers in the summer. Members of Ixora
prefer acidic soil, and are suitable choices for bonsai. It is
also a popular choice for hedges in parts of South East Asia.
In tropical climates they flower year round.

Shanghai beauty (Jatropha pandurifolia) A shrub with small


flowers surrounded by bright red bracts. Evergreen shrubs,
1-1.5m it is called "Ri Ri Ying", that the Chinese name means
"Every-day-flowered Cherry Blossom". Distributed in West
Indies.

Song of India (Dracaena reflexa) is richly coloured,


evergreen leaves, and has thick, irregular stems.
While it may reach a height of 4–5 m, rarely 6 m in ideal,
protected locations, D. reflexa is usually much smaller,
especially when grown as a houseplant. The flowers are
small, clustered, and usually white.

Beach Spider Lily (Hymenocallis littoralis ) has white


flowers. It ranges in height from 60-70cm (36 inches). It
requires sunlight to partial shade for proper growth and
blooms from mid-summer with white flowers. It may be
grown aquatically.
Hymenocallis littoralis is native to coastal regions of
southern Mexico and Central America.

Talisay (Terminalia catappa) grows to 35 metres (115 ft) tall, with


an upright, symmetrical crown and horizontal branches. It has
corky, light fruit that is dispersed by water. The leaves are large,
15–25 centimetres, broad oblong, glossy dark green and leathery.
They are dry-season deciduous; before falling, they turn pinkish-
reddish or yellow-brown.

Triangle palm (Dypsis decaryi) is a palm native to the


Madagascan rainforest. It can reach 15 metres in height. The leaves are
about 2.5 metres in length, arching almost upright from the trunk and then
arching gracefully about a metre from their tip. The leaf bases grow on three
distinct sides of the plant, forming a triangle, which gives the palm its
common name. Yellow and green flowers branch out from the lower leaves.
The palm is a great ornamental plant and should be grown out in the open to
show its unique shape. It prefers full sun and regular watering, although can

handle occasional dryness and part shade. If given the choice it


prefers sandy soil.
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is an herbaceous plant. It
is native to tropical and southern Africa but has become
naturalized in other parts of the world. Variegated forms in
particular are used as house plants.

Creeping daisy (Wedelia trilobata) is native to the northern part of South


America and the West Indies. It is a creeping evergreen perennial that roots at
the leaf nodes and spreads widely. The leaves are oblong shaped and usually
3 lobed. The flower is a yellow daisy-like flower that is approximately 1 inch
across. The plant makes an excellent groundcover as well as a great hanging
basket. It grows well under trees but it will not tolerate wet soils. Grow in
full sun to part shade.

Dwarf white bamboo (Pleioblastus variegatus)


Dwarf white-stripe has 5-inch-long, upward-pointing
green leaves strongly variegated with white. It grows up
to 3 feet tall in either sun or shade, forming a striking
contrast to less flamboyant neighbors.

veined mid-rib and sword-like shape.

Yellow Oleander (Thevetia peruviana) is a plant native to central


and southern Mexico and Central America.
It is an evergreen tropical shrub or small tree. Its leaves are willow-
like and glossy green in colour. They are covered in waxy coating to
reduce water loss (typical of oleanders). Its stem is green turning
silver/gray as it ages.

Royal palm (Roystonea regia) a species of palm which is native to


southern Florida, Mexico and parts of Central America and the
northern Caribbean. A large and attractive palm, it has been planted
throughout the tropics and subtropics as an ornamental tree.

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is a large palm, growing up to 30 meters tall,


with pinnate leaves 4–6 meters long. Old leaves break away cleanly, leaving
the trunk smooth. Coconuts are generally classified into two general types: tall and dwarf. On
very fertile land, a tall coconut palm tree can yield up to 75 fruits per year, but more often
yields less than 30 mainly due to poor cultural practices.

Golden lily (Crinum asiaticum).This big crinum lily makes an imposing


presence in the garden. The dark green strap-like leaves may be more
than 1 m long and 4 in. wide. These are held erect and arranged
spirally. The leaves emerge from huge bulbs that may weigh (5-9 kg)!
Flowers are shaped like tubes that flair opens into a cro w n of narrow
petals.

Zigzag plant (Pedilanthus tithymaloides) A very easy to


grow indoor plant. Give it bright to direct light and grow
on the dry side. Has interesting zig zag stems.

Phil. Violet (Barleria cristata) grows as a shrub 60 –100 cm tall.


The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and pale green
on the lower surface. They are narrowly ovate or egg-shaped.
The flowers are about 5 cm long, funnel-shaped in violet, pink, or
white color.

India plant (Chamaeranthemum venosum) stems spreading to


form a mat one to two feet wide, leaves two to three inches
long, broad, grey-green with silver veins.

Nerve plant (Fittonia verschaffeltii) is a species of tropical


plant native to Peru. Its stem is covered in hair. The veins of
the leaves are usually white, but colors vary with cultivar. It is
suitable as a house plant.

Moradong dilaw (Pseuderanthemum reticulatum) this species has


green-veined creamy yellow leaves. The small, white flowers have
purple-pink spots that are concentrated at the base of the petals.

Grandiflora (Thunbergia grandiflora) native to


tropical regions of Africa, Madagascar and
southern Asia. Thunbergia species are vigorous
annual or perennial vines and shrubs growing to 2-8
m tall. Some are frequent garden escapes
becoming invasive species; they are regarded as
environmental threats in Australia.

Dita (Alstonia scholaris) Flowers bloom in the month


October. The flowers are very fragrant. Seeds of A.
scholaris are oblong and end with clump of hairs. The
bark is almost odorless and very bitter, with abundant
bitter and milky sap.

Banuyo (Wallaceodendron celebicum) Large tree to 30 m tall; stem


to 80 cm or more in diameter; outer bark generally smooth,
sometimes cracking and flaking off.

Lion’s Tail (Agave attenuate) The stems typically range


from 50 to 150 cm (20–60 in) in length, and eventually old
leaves fall off, leaving them naked and visible. The leaves
are egg-shaped to pointed, pale in color, ranging from a
light gray to a light yellowish green. Prefer relatively moist
loamy soil, although it can cope with poor soil and dry
conditions. It should be protected from direct sunlight in
summer.

Snake Palnt (Sanseviera trifasciata) Growth is comparatively slow and


the plant will last for many years. The tall-growing plants have stiff, erect,
lance-shaped leaves. As houseplants, Sansevieria thrives on warmth and
bright light, but will also tolerate shade. They can rot from over-watering so
it is important that they are potted in well-drained soil and not over-
watered. They need to be re-potted or split at the root from time to time
because they will sometimes grow so large that they break the pot they are
growing in.

Hahnii Swirls or Birds Nest Sansevieria (Sansevieria trifasciata


variety 'Hahnii') they form a low growing, vase-like rosette of
broad elliptic spirally-arranged leaves. Plants form clumps
growing to 12 inches tall with an equal spread are very robust
and sucker freely.

Easter lily (Hippeastrum puniceum)


is a bulbous perennial native to tropical regions of South
America. Plants have 4–6 leaves, each of which is bright green,
30-60 cm long by 2.5-3 cm wide. The leaves are not fully
developed when the flowers appear. The flowers are borne in
an umbel on a stem which is 40-60 cm tall.

Pandakaki (Tabernaemontana pandacaqui) Erect, branched


and smooth shrub, 1-3 meters high. Leaves are short-
stalked. The flowers are few.

Crape jasmine (Ervatamia divaricata) generally grows to a


height of 6 ft. However, it can also grow into a small
tree with a thin, crooked stem. The large shiny leaves
are deep green and are 6 or more inches in length and
about 2 inches in width. Crape jasmine blooms in
spring but flowers appear periodically all year. The
waxy blossoms are white five-petaled pinwheels that

are borne in small clusters on the stem tips. Flowers tip are
pointed contrary to pandakaki’s.

Elephant Ear (Alocasia macrorrhizos) can reach 4 m high. These can


be up to 2 m long on a petiole to 1 m long. In tropical conditions it
forms a trunk 10 cm in diameter and about 2 m high. The
inflorescence consists of a white spadix
(an inflorescence consisting of a spike with a fleshy or thicken
ed) surrounded by a green cover of
about 20 cm. The fruits are red berries 1
cm in diameter.

Balfour Aralia (Polyscias balfouriana) Medium size shrubs with attractive foliage. There are many
species; some of these are grouped under this heading. Ideal for group planting or as pot plants. Most
of these are suitable as bonsai material.

Galamay amo (Schefflera elliptica 'Variegata')


Schefflera (sometimes called the umbrella plant) features
long, shiny, oval green leaves that droop gracefully from a
central stalk. A mature schefflera might have 12 or 16 leaflets
from a single stalk, while an immature schefflera is more
likely to have 4 or 6.

Crown flower (Calotropis gigantea) is a large shrub growing to 4 m


tall. It has clusters of waxy flowers that are either white or lavender
in color. Each flower consists of five pointed petals and a small,
elegant "crown" rising from the centre. The plant has oval, light
green leaves and milky stem.

Angel Wing Begonia (Begonia coccinea) this plant is attractive to bees,


butterflies and/or birds. This plant is suitable for growing indoors.

Yellow Tabebuia (tabebuia argentea) are


large shrubs or trees growing to 5 to 50 m (dry-
season deciduous but some are evergreen).
Tabebuia is a notable flowering tree. The flowers

are 3 to 11 cm wide and are produced in dense


clusters.
Scarlet Star (Guzmania lingulata) is known to
originate from Central and South America. Foliage
grows in a star-shaped basal rosette which ends in
an orange and red inflorescence. They are among
the most commonly cultivated bromeliad types.

Indian shot (Canna indica) a native of the Caribbean and


tropical Americas that is also widely cultivated as a garden plant. It is
a perennial growing from 0.5m to 2.5m.
The seeds are small, globular, black pellets, hard and heavy enough to
sink in water. They resemble shotgun pellets giving rise to the plant's
common name of Indian Shot.

common creeping vine. It grows on the upper parts
of beaches and endures salted air. It is one of the most
common and most widely distributed salt tolerant plants.

Umbrella plant (Cyperus alternifolius) it is a perennial plant


which is native to Madagascar, Mauricius and The Réunion island.
It can reach up to about 3-6 ft tall, depending on the growing
conditions. This plant has evergreen foliage, composed of long
stems.

Aratles (Muntingia calabura) It is a small tree 7-12 meters tall


with tiered and slightly drooping branches. It has serrated
leaves 2.5-15 cm long and 1-6.5 cm wide. The flowers are small
and white. It gives rise to 1-1.5 cm light red fruit. The fruit is
edible, sweet and juicy, and contains a large number of tiny
yellow seeds.

Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) It is an evergreen shrub


growing to 3 m tall and has large, thick, leathery, shiny
evergreen leaves.

Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a shrub or small tree,


typically reaching a height of 0.6 to 4 m. The plant bears dark
green toothed leaves that measure 7 to 16 cm in length. The
flowers are most often flaming red but can be orange, pale
green, cream, pink, white or marbled—are actually leaves;
because the flowers are unassuming and do not attract
pollinators.
