Individualized Professional Development Plan

Name: Emma Marchel | Major: Elementary Education

Why are you pursuing this degree?


I registered for all of my classes at Butler and was sure I wanted to major in music education, but a week before classes started I panicked and
switched to exploratory major for my first semester. By the end of the semester I had declared elementary education as my major because I realized
I knew all along I wanted to work with children and have an impact on them, but I realized it was the youngest ones that I wanted to teach because
I love how innocent and malleable their minds are and how every little thing they see and do has an impact on their life at this point.

What do you want the outcome to be? Is this outcome directly related to your “why?”
I want students to feel that they have a safe place to come every day and express the emotions they may not be able to at home. I also want
students to look at me the way I look at my favorite teachers—a role model and mentor. An outcome for myself personally would be that I taught
each and every one of my kids to the best of my ability and to teach them as much information at a time. This is partially related to my why because
doing this would have a big impact on the students.

How are you going to work toward making that outcome possible?
I want to learn as much as I can in the education classes I take here at Butler. But in addition to what I learn in the classroom, I think the best way
to learn is from interacting with students and children themselves. I think doing more observations and even doing some observations and
babysitting on my own will be very beneficial.
