Report: Material handling system

Material handling:
It is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout
manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption and disposal. As a process, material
handling incorporates a wide range of manual, semi-automated and automated equipment and
systems that support logistics and make the supply chain work. Its applications help us with
forecasting, resource allocation, production planning, flow and process management, inventory
management and control customer delivery, after-sales support and service etc.

Material handling equipment:


It is mechanical equipment used for the movement, storage, control and protection of
materials, goods and products throughout the process of manufacturing, distribution, consumption
and disposal. The different types of handling equipment can be classified into four major
categories.

Transport equipment: Equipment used to move products from one place to another e.g., Trucks,
airplanes etc.
Positioning equipment: Equipment used to manipulate the position of products at a single location
e.g., conveyors, electric tugs and cranes etc.
Unit load formation equipment: Equipment used to restrict materials so that they maintain their
integrity when handled a single load during transport and for storage e.g., pallets etc.
Storage equipment: Equipment used for holding and buffering materials over a period of time e.g.,
racks etc.

Basic function:
The basic function of material handling is to choose the most suitable material handling
equipment, which is safe and able to meet material handling requirements to the minimum possible
total cost, and choose the production machinery and assist in the design of the plant to eliminate,
as far as possible, the need for material handling. In general, the functions of a good material
handling system include. The function of the people working on the material handling system is
that, improve the customer service, reduce inventory, shorten delivery time, and lower overall
handling costs in manufacturing, distribution and transportation. They can do all things by getting
reviews and suggestion from their customers. Apart from these functions is that how they are going
to use material handling. They can use it by utilizing their material handling equipment’s which
includes the semi-automated and automated equipment’s to improve the movement of material
from one place to another, its consumption, its protection and delivery of products. They can use
casters and wheels, conveyors, industrial robots, packaging, protective guarding, racks, software
and storage.

(a) Using the principles of centralization, unit loading or cartelization, aim to move the optimal
number of pieces in a unit.
(b) Material handling equipment of a safe, standard, efficient, effective, appropriate, flexible, and
appropriately sized size must be selected.
(c) Use mechanical aids instead of manual labor to accelerate the movement of materials.
(d) Minimize the movement involved in a production operation.
(e) Changes in the sequence of production operations can be suggested to minimize backward
movement and duplicate handling
(f) The arrangement of handling equipment should minimize the distance traveled by the products
and, at the same time, the handling equipment should not interfere with the production line.
(g) Minimize the distances traveled, adopting the shortest routes.
(h) Design containers, packages, drums, etc., to economize the handling and reduce the damage to
the materials in transit.
(i) Use gravity to assist the movement of materials whenever possible.
(j) Materials handling equipment should be periodically reviewed, repaired and maintained.

Description:
I have designed a machine workshop which includes the several machines like lathe,
milling and drilling machines and also it includes the material handling equipment like conveyors
and storage etc. It also have the office and the changing room for the workers.
