Teaching Portfolio Rationale

Standard 7

Part I: Describe a teaching artifact that represents the overall HTSB Standard
HTSB Overall Standard Standard 7 - Planning for Instruction
Teaching Artifact Intro to Animation (Animation 1) Unit Plan
Course ED310A
Teaching Artifact Description A project based unit plan for 1st year Arts and Communication students.
The unit plan is focused on the introduction to animation, the first lessons
in animation the students receive.
Teaching Artifact Results When applied, the unit plan was very successful. Students were engaged
from the start, experienced meaningful instruction, and were able to
produce industry relevant projects.
Part II: Connect the teaching artifact to sub-standard and assess our proficiency
Sub Standard Sub-standard 7.2 - CANDIDATE DEVELOPS MEANINGFUL UNIT PLANS
Connection to Artifact Because the unit focused on animation, the students made meaningful
connections to the work. Most (if not all) students that chose to take Arts
and Comm are a fan of animation, and allowing them to explore,
understand, and create their own animations created an meaningful
experience.
Self-Assessment 4-Candidate ALWAYS does this as a teacher
3-Candidate MOSTLY does this as a teacher
2-Candidate SOMETIMES does this as a teacher
1-Candidate RARELY/NEVER does this as a teacher
NA-Candidate did not have the opportunity to do this
NS-Question is confusing ambiguous, or difficult to rate
Evidence of Self-Assessment Students are excited about this unit from the beginning. They are
engaged through the lectures and are usually surprised to learn how
much they already know about animation. When it comes time to create
their own animation the students often go above and beyond what is
required and are motivated to continue their work into the next unit.
Part III: Improve your proficiency for the HTSB Standard
Sub Standard to Improve Sub-standard 7.5 - CANDIDATE USES PRIOR KNOWLEDGE TO PLAN
INSTRUCTION
What to Improve? I think that there is always room for improvement when reflecting and
planning instruction. I rely heavily on my past industry experience when
planning instruction, but I feel that I could improve on using assessments
and experience from past instruction to improve my current and future
instruction.

Implementation of Findings I will be able to improve my lesson planning, and in turn increase my
instructional time and quality, by developing formative and summative
assessments that not only give insight to student learning but will be used
to improve the overall unit planning. The increased use of assessments
will lead to more of a student centered instruction by finding out what
methods work best with students and what will engage the students.
