Foundations

of Business
Personal Renaissance

Jeff Klc

Much like how the Renaissance was a rebirth for the world in the 14th

century, I have also experienced a personal Renaissance more specifically with my

attitudes and thoughts on the topic of business and general studying ethics. The

change in these points have been a turning point in my college career and have

paved a way for me to become a higher learner.

This particular course was taken online which takes studying effectively to a

whole new level. Prior to this course I had taken some online courses but they

weren’t courses that required much reading. Every module had reading that one

was required to read in order to score high on the weekly assignment where the

questions are based on the readings. Prior to this class I was getting by with limited

reading, however I learned quickly I had to read a lot for this course which meant

time management was important. Prior to this class I would tend to study and read

the necessary passages in the textbook over a span of a couple days. Prior to this

course and it bled into the first couple weeks I scanned the reading and didn’t make

an effort. I figured I could wait until the due date and get the readings, assignment

and discussion done in a couple hours. This mediocre effort had mediocre results.

My assignments and the modules where I spent the entire week reading and

creating outlines prepared me for the weekly assignment and discussion, which

usually ended with better results.

Besides the class structure my thoughts also changed throughout the

semester with the regards specifically to business. Prior to this course, I hadn’t
taken a business class. My father owed a business and most of my childhood was

watching him run the business. As I think back I remember aspects of bookkeeping

and division of labor however I didn’t know that what I was noticing at the time. In

my current job I notice business concepts and now I am able to understand the

concepts and why they are important. I was interesting because my current job is a

athletic ticket office and we often do ticket trades with other businesses. For

example we do a ticket trade with Chick fil a. where we give them tickets to football

games and they give us food, which is basically bartering the first form of business.

I find it extremely interesting of how the purpose of business has changed

from ancient times to now and the evolution behind the change. I never thought

about how business can go from a simple trade for survival to making profit. There

were many stages and events that happened over time to make the change happen.

Prior to this class my understanding on these events was limited especially with the

Industrial Revolution. I knew the concepts of the mills evolving into factories and I

have studied the division of labor previous as well. What I didn’t know is how many

people immigrated to England. I also learned England was naturally divided into an

industrial area and a conservative area. Other then geographical changes in England

there were also social differences. The two major classes are those representing

capitol and representing labor or a simpler terms the employee and the employer.

Attitude this semester was what motivated me the whole semester. This

semester I also took the course Essentials of College Study and we learned a lot

about attitude in that course. In the text book for that course written by TC Stewe is

says, “As you progress through this text, you shall become keenly aware of the
differences between an effective attitude and an ineffective attitude… Your attitude,

then, either is effective in serving that purpose or it is not”. Being able to apply this

aspect in life really helped my motivation for this semester and helped me finish

strong. I was able to really make many parallels between these to courses, which

enabled me to become the student I wanted to be. This motivation was the building

blacks that enabled me to learn all the crucial information about business from what

this course presented.

My attitude toward business this semester didn’t really change but was more

enlightened. Before this semester I didn’t really know to much about the history of

business so I wanted to take learning the foundations of business seriously. When I

say my attitude was enlighten this semester, I mean it shifted and I needed to work

hard mentally to keep the effective attitude. As I mentioned earlier this course was

centered on a lot of reading and comprehension. I have many talents and natural

talents but reading and comprehension is not one of them. I came into this course

with the attitude of getting the most out of it but with some of the reading my

positive attitude would sometimes shift. I had to be able to find techniques to me of

how I could adjust my attitude toward the business topics to motivate myself to

learn and get the most out of the course.

Throughout our lives we all will go through many personal renaissances or

rebirths in our lives some are big and some are small. This semester has been an

example of this for me personally with the multiple courses I was able to take. In the

course Foundations of Business specifically I was able to have a rebirth specifically

with my thoughts and attitudes towards business. Much like how the Renaissance
changed the business world forever I hope the change I have made in my life will

enable me to become a higher learner.
