Ethics are what guide us humans to fulfilling a meaningful life, they are what we hold dear and

true to ourselves and make us who we are. Not everybody’s ethics are the same, they can differ

based on religion, family, environment, and what you think is right and wrong. Ethics can be

connected to multiple different areas of life whether it be work, school, relationships, sports, etc.

we can make connections with our personal ethics within these areas. I will be discussing what

affects our personal ethics and how our personal ethics can affect financial reporting decisions.

There are a lot of things and situations in life that can affect our personal ethics and how

they are developed, the main ones I will be discussing are family, religion, environment, and the

wrongs. Your family raises you from the time that you are born, most of the ethical ways you

learn will be from them, they are a direct source meaning that you will get fed the information

and skills from them directly. As a child you basically are a canvas waiting to be painted with

information from your parents, and they will teach to be strong, good communicator, honest,

loving, and the rest of the ethics a child should learn growing up. Now all examples developed

from your family are not always positive, you can pick up some bad examples if they are

teaching or are sneaking behind the other’s back, for example, cheating on your spouse,

smoking, drinking, etc. just to name a few that are very bad personal ethics. A religion teaches

you personal ethics by giving you examples of how to live a religious life like god, examples

from the holy book of the religion, some examples of sins to avoid. Environment is a huge part

as well because this is where you develop your peer relationships which in turn again start to

have effects on you, the city you grow up in, whether it is rural or urban.

Personal ethics have a strong presence when you are working, you also want to do what

your parents taught you with regards to work ethic, you could be a really hard worker that is

honest, or a lying scumbag that steals from the business. Personal ethics affect financial

reporting because you can either be really honest and do the right job or succumb to the pressure

and lie because of personal gain, this could be that your employer is telling to do so or lose your

job, or that they guarantee a higher position if you start to do some fishy stuff with the reporting.

Always go back to the roots of your personal ethics in order to make a decision, because in some

cases the consequences could be really positive or negative and permanent.

In conclusion, personal ethics are what make us who we are today, without these ethics we

would all be the same and there would be no learning experience in the world to teach us the

right from the wrong. Personal ethics can be affected by our family, environment, and religion

and etc. we are a blank canvas, and these things will paint information for us to follow. Personal

ethics are valuable when it comes to financial reporting because if you stick to your positive

ethics and do the right work there should be no problem, but go against or violate your ethics and

you will make a negative permanent solution.
