PROGRAM STUDI TEKNIK MESIN

BASIC AUTOCAD
Objective
• After learning this lesson, you will be able to:
• Start AutoCAD program
• Understand AutoCAD workshpace
• Recognize all the features in the AutoCAD window
Introduction
• Almost 95% of your AutoCAD drafting time is spent using inly 5% of
the available commands, over and over again.
• And, even the most complex drawing is essentially made up of only a
few basic fundamental objects that appear over and over again in
various combinations on the screens.
• So, you need to learn only a handfull of key commands, such as: line,
circle, arc and rectangle, and how to modify them.
Open AutoCAD
Select New from the top left corner of the
window
• Acad.dwt template
is used for imperial
measurement
(inches)
• Acadiso.dwt
template is used for
metric
measurement
(meter, millimeter)
• Drawing area: this is where you work and youe design appears.
• Drawing tabs: visible at the upper left. This is to allow you to cycle
through multiple drawing
• Command line(s): located below the drawing area. It can be turned
off and on using Ctrl + 9. This is where you enter AutoCAD command
• UCS icon: is the coordinate system in AutoCAD, symbollized with X-Y-Z
grid symbol on the bottom left corner.
• Paper space/model space tabs: the Model/Layout1/Layout2 tabs are
to indicate which drawing space you are in.
• Toolbar: contains icon that can be pressed to activate commands.
They are the alternative to typing command
• Crosshair: the display of mouse cursor and move around along with
the movement of the mouse.
• Drawing and construction aids: various setting to assist you in drafting
and modeling.
• Ribbon: another way to interact with AutoCAD, other than tyoing
command and prossing icons in toolbar.
• Cascading drop-down menus: another way to access the Ribbon.
Method for Interacting with AutoCAD
• Method 1: Type in the commands on the command line
• Method 2: Select the commands from the drop down cascading
menus
• Method 3: Use toolbar icons to activate the commands
• Method 4: Use the ribbons, icons, and menus
Method 1: Type in the commands on the
command line
• Type: Circle on the command line
Method 2: Select the command from the
drop-down cascading menus
From the cascading drop down
menus, click on draw  Circle 
3 Points
Method 3: Use Toolbar Icons to activate the
commands
Method 4: Use the ribbon tabs, icons, and
menus

• Tips: use Esc key in the keyboard

• Cascading menu:
• There are another 11 ways to create arcs, either from Ribbon or
cascading menu.

• From Ribbon: • From Cascading menu:

Now, you have learned the basic tools to
make 2D draftting in AutoCAD
• You can try to make the following simple 2D sketch of a house
Now, we’ll study how to view the object in
our workspace
• Zoom: put your finger in the mouse wheel, and turn it back and forth,
without pressing it. It can be done by typing “z” and press enter. Type
letter “e”, and press enter to “zoom to extends”
• Pan: put your finger in the mouse wheel, while press and hold it.
• Regen: to refresh the screen. It can be done by typing “regen”, and
press enter.

• You can also view the object from the following ribbon menu:
Edit/Modifying Commands
• In Engineering Drawing, Fillet need to
have radius greater than 0 (zero), but
in AutoCAD, Fillet can have 0 (zero
radius.
Fillet cont.’
Drawing Accuracy: In order to ensure that our
lines are perfectly stright, we need tool to do that
• ORTHO (F8)
• Stands for Orthographic.
• Helpd you to draw perfectly straight vertical and horizontal lines
• OSNAPs
• Is needed when you want to connect a line with other entites, such as
endpoint/midpoint of lines, quadrant of circles, etc.
• You can control what kind of osnap you want to activate, by typing
“OSNAP” on your screen.
• Endpoints: two locations at the ends of any line. Another entity can be
attached precisely to the an endpoint

• Midpoint: the middle of any line. Another entity can be attached

precisely to a midpoint.

• Perpendicular: OSNAP points that allows you to begin or end a line

perpendicular to another line.
• Center: the center of any circle. Another entity can be
attached precisely to a center point.

• Quadrants: the four points at the north (90o), west

(180o), south (270o) and east (0o, 360o) quadrants of a
circle. Another entity can be attached precisely to a
quadrant point.

• Intersection: a point located at the intersection of any

two entities. You can begin with a line, and attach any
entity to that point
