#38 The Van Halen Guitar Sound Trick

1. Create a reverb channel
2. Set the decay to at least 2 sec and predelay to at least 120ms
3. Pan the guitar channel to the left and the send pan to the right
NOTE: Time the predelay to the track

#39 The Guitar Room Trick

1. Create a stereo delay channel
2. Set one side to 25ms and the other to 50ms
3. Pan the return left and right
4. Control the amount of the effect from an aux send on the guitar channel

#40 The Short Reverb Decay Trick

1. Create a reverb channel
2. Set reverb to shortest decay time with 0ms predelay
3. Send from guitar channel aux send to taste
NOTE: Pan the reverb to same side as guitar to make it larger, opposite to
make it wider

Mix Tricks Module 3 Checklists! 2

#41 The Swept Midrange Guitar Trick
1. Insert an EQ with a variable midrange across the guitar channel
2. Boost mids 10dB
3. Sweep the frequencies to find the thickest sound
4. Decrease the amount of boost to taste

#42 The Lightly Flanged Guitar Trick

1. Insert a stereo delay across the guitar channel
2. Set the mix to 50% or less
3. Set the delay time to 0ms
4. Set the modulation depth to 100%, LFO speed to 0.18Hz (approx) and
feedback to 40-50%

#43 The Acoustic Guitar Peak Limiter Trick

1. Insert a limiter across the acoustic guitar channel
2. Increase the threshold until the peaks are controlled
3. Adjust the gain to match bypass level
NOTE: Increase the ratio when the track has bigger peaks

#44 The Filter Boost Bass Trick

1. Insert low and high pass filters on the bass channel
2. Set to around 50Hz and 2kHz
3. Increase the low and high EQ bands at 50Hz and 2kHz
NOTE: Adjust the EQ frequency higher or lower as needed

#45 The Miked And Direct Phase Trick

1. Zoom in to the lowest level to see the waveforms
Mix Tricks Module 3 Checklists! 3
2. Nudge the miked channel waveform to match the direct channel
waveform

#46 The Picked Bass Dilemma Trick

1. Insert a limiter in the signal path of the bass track
2. Set the threshold to control the peaks
3. Insert a compressor after the limiter in the signal path
4. Set to threshold to keep all notes consistent
NOTE: Adjust the release control for most body

#47 The Bass Trigger Trick

1. Insert a gate in the signal path of the bass channel
2. Select the key input and buss
3. Send from an aux on the desired channel
NOTE: Adjust sound envelope with the release control

#48 The Wide Bass Trick

1. Duplicate the bass track twice and pan left and right
2. Insert a HPF on one new channel at 250Hz or to taste
3. Insert a HPF on the other channel and insert an overdrive or distortion
NOTE: Adjust pan and level of left and right channels to taste

#49 The Bass Low-End Definition Trick

1. Duplicate the bass track
2. HPF duplicated track at 250Hz or to taste
3. LPF original track at point of HPF on other track
4. Add a bass enhancer to the original track
Mix Tricks Module 3 Checklists! 4
NOTE: Adjust level of duplicate track for most definition

#50 The Kick And Bass Balance Trick

1. HPF kick and miked bass to reduce rumble as needed
2. Boost kick EQ at 80Hz and 2kHz; dip at 200-400Hz as needed
3. Boost bass EQ at 100-120Hz and 1k-3kHz; boost 700Hz for more punch
NOTE: Also try reversing kick and bass EQ frequencies

#51 The Elton Piano Sound Trick

1. Insert tube-style compressor across piano channels
2. Set for 6 to 10dB of compression
3. Insert tube-style EQ after compressor in signal path
4. Boost 100Hz and 12kHz to taste

#52 The Hat Pad Trigger Trick

1. Insert a gate in the pad signal path
2. Select the key input and buss
3. Send from an aux on the desired channel
NOTE: Adjust attack and release to control sound envelope

#53 The Big Pad Reverb Trick

1. Create a reverb channel and set it to Hall
2. Insert an EQ with a HPF/LPF before the reverb in the signal path
3. Set the HPF to 200Hz or higher, and the LPF to anywhere from 2k to
8kHz
4. Set filters and reverb amount so the reverb is big but doesn’t get in the way
