SPECIFYING A PURPOSE FOR RESEARCH AND COLLECTING DATA.

Problem:

Very low levels in English in the Tests to saber Pro presented by the students of the faculty of
Foreign Languages degree with an emphasis in English and administration and related at the
Catholic University of Colombia. What are the causes that affect the performance in the
Saber Pro tests of students who obtain low results?

SPECIFYING A PURPOSE FOR RESEARCH

In the new era of globalization, the learning of English is of vital importance mainly for
university students. Most of the basic bibliography of the different careers is in English, as well
as the necessary information on the Internet. University Teaching is the last step towards
professionalization, which is why it represents the last opportunity from the school point of view,
so that students have a correct command of this language. After completing this stage, the new
graduate or engineer who knows how to communicate and understand English, will have
dissimilar doors open worldwide.

To ensure this, higher education in several countries organizes a strategy that can understand
various compulsory English subjects, as well as a strict passing examination to obtain the degree.
On the other hand, it can establish agreements with institutions specialized in the teaching of this
language, and insert students in courses.

Although progress has been made in the recognition of the importance of languages in the
vocational training process, the following are not yet achieved desired results in the degree of
knowledge and mastery and this is reflected in low results in the Saber Pro tests.

Aware of this situation, we consider that it is of great importance to reflect on which factors are
related to this phenomenon so that, based on the results, the different deans of the faculties can
optimize the teaching and learning processes and design strategies that allow for improving the
performance of students in this evaluative component. These types of research exercises are
important because they generate useful knowledge for the institution itself and for the cultural
transformation of the organization.
The understanding of low performance factors will be a useful tool for decision making and the
improvement of pedagogical processes and student accompaniment.
