STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES
Quality Management System

1.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidance in applying statistical techniques to
control, where appropriate, product or process to ensure specified requirements are met.

This procedure shall apply to a product or process identified by the Client or Project
Manager as requiring statistical techniques.

Note: This procedure is a guide only and where statistical techniques are deemed
necessary project specific Procedures shall be developed.

2.0 DEFINITIONS
Statistical Unit - one of a number of similar articles or parts each of
which may possess several different quality characteristics;

Observed Value - the value of a quality characteristics (commonly

denoted as "x" or a sample) measured or observed on a unit;

Sample - a portion of material or a group of units taken

from a large number which is used to obtain estimates of the
properties of the larger quantity;

Statistic - a quantity computed from the observations of

a sample;

Arithmetic Mean - the mean or average ("" for a sample) is the sum of
all the observed values divided by the number of observed
values (n);

Median - the value which is greater than one half of the

observed values and less than one half of the observed
values;

Deviation - the difference between an observed value and

the mean of all the observed values;

Variance - the variance ("s2" for a sample) of a set of

observed values is the mean squared deviation of the
individual observed values ie. the sum of the squared
deviations of each observed value from the arithmetic mean
() divided by the sample size minus one (n-1).

Standard Deviation - the standard deviation ("s" for a sample) is the square root of
the variance.

4.0 PROCEDURAL TEXT

4.1 Procedure

i.) When specified in the contract or deemed necessary by the Project Manager, the
Quality Assurance Engineer (QAE) in conjunction with the Project Engineer shall
prepare project specific statistical techniques procedure.

ii.) The Project Manager shall, where specified in the contract, submit statistical
techniques procedures to the client for approval.

iii.) 4.1.3 The QAE shall use the following systematic process to determine how
statistical techniques will apply to a product/process and by what means data will be
presented and reported.

 Determine how observed values of statistical units are to be recorded, eg.

37.6 Mpa; 98.7% of MDD. etc.

 Determine the arithmetic mean for the sample and the standard deviation
and such other statistical aids as may be specified and/or are deemed
necessary to ensure adequate control of the process is being maintained.

 Determine the method by which statistical data will be presented eg. control
chart, histogram etc.

iv.) Where statistical techniques are deemed necessary, the Project Manager shall
determine the frequency of reporting. The QAE shall prepare all such reports.
