Calculations are based on vRPAs with 4 vCPUs and 8 GB RAM using default configuration.
CGs are fairly distributed in IOPs and bandwidth.

vRPA configuration selection criteria and number of vRPAs

Q: What are the considerations to decide on the number vRPA configuration and number of vRPAs to be deployed?
A: The basic vRPA cluster configuration is of 2 vRPA with 2 vCPUs/ 4GB RAM configuration.
When protecting more than 128 VMs or 64 consistency groups per vRPA, use 2 vCPUs/ 8 GB RAM configuration.
For higher throughputs and IOPS workloads use 4 vCPUs/ 8 GB RAM, or 8 vCPUs/ 8 GB RAM configurations, or
add additional vRPAs to the cluster.
Single vRPA can be deployed instead of a cluster, providing similar performance as a 2 vRPA cluster,
without providing the cluster high availability, this is mainly recommended for testing environment
Changing the vRPA configuration or adding vRPAs to a cluster can be done after the initial deployment.

Example: Replication load definition

Q: My Application generates a total of 20,000 IOPS OLTP2 I/O pattern (3:1 R/W ratio), How many IOPS are
replicated by RecoverPoint?
A: RecoverPoint for VMs replicates only the application writes, while the reads are ignored and have no impact
on performance. In order to estimate RecoverPoint for VMs performance, only the writes workload is calculated.
In this example RecoverPoint for VMs will replicate 5,000 IOPS (1\4 of 20,000).

Example: Choosing vRPA configuration

Q: I need to replicate several VMs, but I don’t know the workload that they generate. Which vRPAs
configuration should I choose when I deploy the vRPA cluster?
A: A possible strategy is to start by deploying a small vRPA cluster of two 2-vCPUs, 4-GB RAM vRPAs because
these are the most cost effective vRPAs for throughput. After protecting the VMs, you will check the throughput
statistics of the CGs and examine high loads, and then adjust the vRPA configuration accordingly, and even add
vRPAs to the vRPA cluster, if needed.

SIZING GUIDE

Example: vRPA cluster deployment

Q: I need to protect two VMs that generate combined writes of 24,000 IOPS. How should I plan the
vRPA cluster?
A: 24,000 IOPS can be handled by a single “8 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM” vRPA or by two “4 vCPUs, 8GB RAM”
vRPAs.
For redundancy reasons, you’ll either need two “8 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM” vRPAs or three “4 vCPUs, 8 GB
RAM” vRPAs in the vRPA cluster. The hardware requirement of the latter is lower and therefore will better
utilize the host resources, and it will also allow better spread of the load over the ESXi hosts if you have
more than two.
