CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Problem


English is one of the foreign languages. It is very important in the aspect of
education. Because English is included for several lessons in our country. As an
international language, this is used to communicate among people in various countries.
However, it could be important for this to be done by students. In learning foreign
languages, Primary English, there are things that need attention. in English there are also
some skills that must be discussed and learned in order to master English well. These
skills include: Listening, Reading, and Writing. Learning English is completed if this
learning can be completed Four lessons above as a whole. To learn English, one does not
need to study formally.
There are 3 theories in learning English, one of which is the Acquisition Theory.
According to Stephen Krashen as quoted by Evelyn (2010: 9) in English Made Easy to
learn English, one does not need to study formally. Acquisition is the process of learning
languages from direct experience in conversations with that language. In other words, it
is successful enough to communicate directly, by doing listening exercises it is hoped that
conversations will be better in learning English because students prefer to listen and
speak in English. But in Indonesia it's not like that. There are still many children who
have difficulty learning English as a foreign language. School is one place for learning
foreign languages, English in Indonesia.
Students learn 4 basic skills in learning English, namely Listening, Reading,
Speaking, and Writing must make it easier for students to learn English. and now, the
government instructs the final examination for English subjects. Introduction Listening is
very important for learning a foreign language. Listening is important because it is the
ability to understand what others say as a means of communication.
Listening is the process of interpreting and understanding what we hear (Graham,
1994: 1). Downs (2008: 1) illustrates that Listening generally includes 5 stages of the
process, namely: participating, understanding, interpreting, responding, and remembering
Listening is an element of skill in English that must be mastered to be able to speak
English actively.
There are many methods and various ways that we use to learn English. There are
also those who carry dictionaries that prefer to speak directly or by using the audio visual
method. The method with any method used does have its own advantages and
disadvantages by using the method of listening to English songs.
By listening to a song's English language skills someone will be better. and listen
to songs to add insight into English by choosing songs, listening to songs, listening to
songs and matching. Sometimes students have low motivation in learning English
because of using repeated techniques by listening to this song students can be interested
in learning English by listening to English songs they like, One way to improve their
English is to play audio or English songs.
Based on the explanation above, I was interested in writing "Improving English
Language Skills in Listening to English Songs"

The purpose of the author:

1. so that students are more interested in learning English

2. To help students improve English.


CHAPTER II

CONTENT

What is listening?

Listening differs from obeying. A person who receives and understands


information or an instruction, and then chooses not to comply with it or to agree to it, has
listened to the speaker, even though the result is not what the speaker wanted. Listening
is a term in which the listener listens to the one who produced the sound to be listened. A
Semiotician, Roland Barthes characterized the distinction between listening and
hearing."Hearing is a physiological phenomenon; listening is a psychological act." We
are always hearing, most of the time subconsciously.Listening is done by choice. It is the
interpretative action taken by someone in order to understand and potentially make
meaning of something they hear.

How does one listen?

According to Roland Barthes Listening can be understood on three levels:


alerting, deciphering, and an understanding of how the sound is produced and how the
sound affects the listener.
Alerting, being the first level is the detection of environmental sound cues. This
means that certain places has certain sounds associated with them. This is best explained
using the example of someone's home. Their home has certain sounds associated with it
that makes it familiar and comfortable. An intrusion, a sound that is not familiar (e.g. a
squeaking door or floorboard, a breaking window) alerts the dweller of the home to the
potential danger. Deciphering, the second level, describes detecting patterns when
interpreting sounds. An example of this level is that of a child waiting for the sound of his
mother's return home. In this scenario the child is waiting to pick up on sound cues (e.g.
jingling keys, the turn of the doorknob, etc.) that will mark his mother's approach.
Understanding, the third level of listening, means knowing how what one says
will affect another. This sort of listening is important in psychoanalysis , the study of the
unconscious mind. Barthes states that the psychoanalyst must turn off their judgement
while listening to their patient in order to communicate with their patient's unconscious in
an unbiased fashion. This is the same way that listeners must turn off their judgment
when listening to other.
All of the three levels of listening function within the same plane, and sometimes
all at once. Specifically the second and third levels, which overlap vastly, can be
intertwined in that obtaining, understanding and deriving meaning are part of the same
process. In that the child, upon hearing the doorknob turn (obtaining), can almost
automatically assume that someone is at the door (deriving meaning).

What is Active Listening?

Active Listening is listening to what someone is saying, and attempting to


understand what is being said. It can be described in a lot of ways. Active Listening is
having good listening skills. The listener is attentive, nonjudgmental, non-interrupting.
An active listener analyzers what the speaker is saying for hidden messages, and
meanings contained in the verbal communication. An active listener looks for non-verbal
messages from the speaker in order to indicate the full meaning of what is being said.
With Active Listening, a person must be willing to hear what someone is saying and the
intent to try to understand what the meaning of what the other person said. When active
listening is used, there can be multiple benefits. Being an active listener means that you
have to possibility to become a more effective listener over time, and your leadership
skills will strengthen.
Active Listening is an exchange between two or multiple people. When those
people are active listeners, the quality of the conversation will be better and more
clear.They connect with each other on a deeper level with each other in their
conversations. Active Listening can create more deep, and positive relationship between
the individuals.
Active Listening is important in bringing changes in the speaker's perspective.
Clinical research and evidence show that active listening is a catalyst in a person's
personal growth. The growth is specific with personality change and group development.
A person will more likely listen to themselves if someone else is allowing them to speak
and get their message across.

In language learning

Along with speaking, reading, and writing, listening is one of the "four skills" of
language learning. All language teaching approaches except for grammar-translation
incorporate a listening component. Some teaching methods, such as Total Physical
Response, involve students simply listening and responding. A distinction is often made
between "intensive listening", in which learners attempt to listen with maximum accuracy
to a relatively brief sequence of speech, and "extensive listening", in which learners listen
to lengthy passages for general comprehension. While intensive listening may be more
effective in terms of developing specific aspects of listening ability, extensive listening is
more effective in building fluency and maintaining learner motivation.

Listening skills according to Fery Mirnawati

Tarigan: Listening is a process of listening to oral symbols with attention,


understanding, appreciation, and interpretation to obtain information, capture content or
messages and understand the meaning of communication that has been conveyed by the
speaker through spoken or spoken language.
 Drs. Hanapi Natasasmita: Listening is listening specifically and centered on the
object being listened to.
 Djago Tarigan: Listening can be defined as an activity that includes listening to
the sound of language, identifying, observing, and reacting to the meaning
contained in the ingredients of the recitation.
 Russell & Russell: Listening meaningfully listening with full understanding and
attention and appreciation.
 Anderson: Listening as a big process of listening, knowing, and interpreting oral
symbols.
 Akhadi-at: Listening is a process that includes activities listening to the sound of
language, identifying, interpreting, and reacting to the meaning contained in it.
 Nurhadi divides the understanding of listening in two: a. First, listening or
listening in a narrow sense refers to the mental process of the listener who
receives sounds that are stimulated by the speaker and then arranges what
interpretations he hears; b. Second, listening in broad terms refers to the process
that the listener does not only understand and make interpretations of what he is
listening to, but more than that he tries to do what is informed by the material he
is listening to.
 Harimurti K .: Listening meaningfully listening with full understanding and
attention and appreciation.
From a number of opinions above, it can be concluded that listening is listening
and understanding the contents of the recipe material because it can be concluded that the
main purpose of listening is to capture, understand or appreciate the message, ideas, ideas
implied in the ingredients of the reconciliation.
Listening is a type of receptive oral language skills. Thus, listening is not just
listening but also understanding it. There are two types of situations in listening, namely
an interactive listening situation and a non-interactive listening situation. Interactive
listening takes place in face-to-face conversations and telephone conversations or the
like. In listening to this type, we take turns listening and talking. Therefore, we have the
opportunity to ask questions to get an explanation, ask the other person to repeat what
was said by him or maybe ask him to speak a little later. Then, examples of non-
interactive listening situations, namely listening to radio, TV, movies, sermons, or
listening to ceremonial events. In these non-interactive listening situations, we cannot ask
for an explanation from the speaker, the speaker cannot repeat what is said, and we
cannot ask for the conversation to be slowed down.
The following are the micro skills involved when we strive to understand what we
hear, that is, listeners must be able to master the following:
 Save / remember elements of language that are heard using short-term memory (short
term memory);
 Attempting to distinguish sounds that distinguish meaning in the target language;
 Be aware of the forms of pressure and tone, sound color, intonation, and the reduction of
word forms;
 Distinguish and understand the meaning of words that are heard;
 Get to know special word-order patterns;
 Detect key words that identify topics and ideas;
 Guess meaning from context;
 Get to know word classes (grammatical word classes);
 Be aware of the basic forms of syntax;
 Get to know cohesive devices;
Detect sentence elements such as subjects, predicates, objects, prepositions, and
other elements.

Teaching English Listening

1. Understanding Listening
According to Anderson (Tarigan, 2008: 30) the essence of listening is the great
process of listening, knowing, and interpreting oral symbols. Listening can also mean
listening with full understanding and attention and appreciation. Listening has the
meaning of listening and paying close attention to what others say. In that case, the
deliberate factor in listening activities is quite large rather than listening because in
listening activities there is an effort to understand what is being listened to, while in
activities listening to the level of understanding has not been done (Sutari, 1998: 17).
Listening has the same meaning as listening. According to Subyantoro and
Hartono (2003: 1-2), listening, is a listening activity that is done intentionally, attentive to
what is heard. In this case the sound stimulation that is intended to be heard is the sounds
of language spoken by people in a communication.
Listening is an activity that is intentionally carried out, has a target level of
understanding needed and takes into account non-linguistic aspects, such as pressure,
tone, intonation, rhythm, and volume. Thus listening is an activity of listening to the
sound of language seriously, thoroughly, as an effort to understand speech as intended by
the speaker by involving mental mental aspects such as identifying, interpreting, and
reacting to it (Musfiroh et al., 2004: 5).
Based on the opinions of several experts above, it can be concluded that listening
is an activity that is intentionally carried out to listen to the sounds of language seriously,
attentively, understanding, and carefully to obtain information or messages conveyed by
the speaker through spoken or spoken language with involves all mental mental aspects
such as identifying, interpreting and reacting. Listening is not an easy activity, which
involves not only the ears, but also involves brain activity.

The purpose of listening

Listening activities are listening activities intentionally and planned or not to


achieve goals. Sutari et al (1998: 22) explain that the main purpose of listening is to
obtain information, analyze, and evaluate information and ideas, get inspiration, obtain
entertainment, and shape personalities.

First, to get information; There are many ways that people do to get information,
namely by doing an experiment, research, reading books, newspapers, magazines,
listening to the radio, watching television, discussing, thus listening is a media to get
information.
Second, to analyze information or ideas; The listener then analyzes the
information or ideas he has obtained by considering the results of the simulations with his
knowledge and experience.
Third, to evaluate information or ideas; In evaluating information, listeners need
to consider something that is listened to by using their knowledge and experience. After
evaluation, listeners can express their opinions, reject opinions, doubt the information
received, conclude the main idea, and assess the truth of the information,
Fourth, to get inspiration; In everyday life humans are often faced with various
problems that may not immediately be resolved or solved. For this purpose, sometimes a
listening activity is needed, both listening to someone's conversation, speeches in
meetings, stories about life experiences. Thus, the listeners were actually aiming to get
inspiration to solve the problems they were facing;
Fifth, to get entertainment; Humans are often faced with some busyness and
problems. When the mind is saturated because it's too tired it takes entertainment. To
obtain such entertainment can be done by listening to songs, television shows, or live
shows,
Sixth, to improve speaking skills; Keep in mind that talking is not easy.
Therefore, to expedite the level of speaking ability can be taken through listening to other
people's conversations. This is evident when learning a foreign language.
The purpose of listening according to Lagon (Tarigan, 2008: 60), among others, is
First, listening to learning; Some people do listening to get knowledge from the speaker's
speech material,
Second, listen to evaluate; Listening to evaluating is the purpose of listening to assess
what is being listened to. Assessment is in the form of good, beautiful-not beautiful, right
inappropriate, logical-illogical, etc.,
Third, listening to appreciate; One of the goals of listening is to enjoy and appreciate
something that has been listened to. The purpose of such listening is to pay attention to
appreciating the recitations.
Fourth, listen to communicate your own ideas. Some people listen with the intention that
they can communicate their ideas, ideas, and feelings to others smoothly and precisely. It
is an important ingredient as a support in conveying his own ideas. Fifth, listen to
distinguish sounds.
The purpose of listening to others is to be able to distinguish between sounds
correctly, and to know sounds that distinguish meaning and sound that do not distinguish
meaning. This can be seen in someone who is learning a foreign language when listening
to native speakers' speech sounds. Sixth, listen to solve problems. Listening with this
intention means that listeners can solve problems creatively and analytically, because
from listening activities can be obtained a lot of valuable and useful information.
Based on the opinions of several experts above, listening comprehension which
will be examined in this study is listening competence in terms of getting information
marked with questions given from the texts that are heard can be answered correctly.
Improve English there are 4 skills, namely, listening, writing, reading and
speaking. From these skills I chose to improve English by listening. Listening to you can
improve your learning skills.You can listen with short dialogue, talk of a lecturer, and
long conversations.
And I choose to listen to songs, by listening to songs you have to:
1. Listen
2. Listening involves processing sound in every human brain.Capturing, can know and
know the intent that is spoken through the tone. Pay attention, focus the full attention
delivered by the song.
3. Understanding
Understanding is the process of accepting the meaning of words delivered so that you
can understand them well. the conversation delivered, compiled and repeated so that
the information delivered can better understand it.
4. Remembering
After understanding what has been heard, then testing how much ability can be stored
and recorded into a memory. In order to be stored for a long time, listeners need to
concentrate fully to listen.
5. Evaluate
Here you will be tested to the extent that you can understand and what you know after
listening.
Using songs as a listening learning media can be done with the following steps:
1. Choose a song
We can choose songs to improve the ability, the song selection must be with a clear
pronunciation. for beginners who want to learn to listen, it is recommended to choose
songs that are easy to understand
2. Listen to songs
In this activity we can only listen. This is to familiarize your ears with English
pronunciation.
3. Listening
Listening is not the same as listening. In this activity we only need to carry a small
note. Listen carefully to the song, then note the lyrics that are spoken.
4. Match
The last activity to improve listening skills with songs is to match the original lyrics.
Then interpret the lyrics as a whole.
Methods of Learning English with Songs

1. Guess the lost vocabulary in song lyrics.


This method is usually done in the classroom when the teacher wants to practice
students' listening and writing skills. The trick, the teacher will share a piece of
paper containing song lyrics with the parts intentionally left blank. Then, the
teacher will play the song several times and ask students to listen carefully to the
song. After that, students will be asked to fill in the blank verses according to the
vocabulary they heard. This method is good enough to be applied because
indirectly, students will learn to analyze sentences when guessing what words are
empty in the stanza.

2. Ask students to sing the song in front of the class.


The song, it turns out, can also be used as a means to train students' speaking
skills. The teacher can assess the extent to which students are able to recite the
English vocabulary while at the same time training their confidence in speaking in
front of the class. This activity is quite fun because each student will get the
opportunity to sing a song they like in front of the class. Later, other students will
act as uri juries ’by checking the words in the lyrics to determine the points
students are singing in front of. So, besides reciting the lyrics correctly, students
are also required to memorize them.

3. Write down the overall song lyrics from the results of listening.
This activity is a little more difficult than the two methods above. In this activity,
students will be asked to write the lyrics they heard without help at all. This
activity is effective to see the extent of students' ability in listening and also to
check the spelling of students when writing the lyrics they hear.

With the method of learning English through songs, it is expected that students
can learn with fun and attractiveness.
Songs can also be used as learning material because songs have their own
interests, by hearing songs someone will feel comfortable and peaceful so someone can
focus on learning the meaning of the words in the song.
by looking at the present day many good English songs are in demand besides the songs
that are good to hear we can also learn through songs that we will choose.
