 1. Overview

A field visit was conducted by the EY team on 24th November 2015, with the support
of Dr. Arya CEO, Agriculture Sector Skill Council and Venkys (Venkateshwara
Hatcheries Pvt Ltd)

Date: 24th November 2015

Details of Location: Venky’s Poultry farm, Samalkha City, Panipat

Overview of Venkys
Venkys stands for Venkateshwara Hatcheries Pvt Ltd. Major activities of the
company include chicken and egg processing, broiler and layer breeding, genetic
research, poultry vaccines & feed supplements, etc.

Layer Poultry farming

Raising egg laying poultry birds for the purpose of commercial egg production. Egg
production from a commercial layer farm depends on care and farm management. For
commercial egg production, highly productive laying birds need to be chosen correctly.

Broiler Poultry Farming

Highly meat productive birds or poultry breeds are called broiler poultry. Raising of such
birds is known as Broiler Poultry Farming. There are many breeds of broilers. Proper and
high quality feed, Temperature is of high importance in the case of Broiler Poultry Farming.

Biosecurity Measures on the poultry farm:

Proper signage and gates at access points to prevent unauthorized entry

Mandatory entry requirements for visitors

Minimization of vehicle movements and mandatory washing down of external vehicles or

equipments

Usage of proper disinfectants for footwear in foot washing baths at the entrance of each
shed

Mandatory wearing of overall and boots for visitors during farm visit

 2. Visit to Breeder Farm and Hatchery

Process of collection of eggs from the farm and process of hatching step by step

Step 1: Eggs from the farm collected at the Hatchery via egg receiving window

Step 2: Selection/ Grading of eggs received (check for following parameters)

Check for minimum weight of eggs
Check for shape of eggs (distorted, not regular shape, etc)
Check for right colour for eggs

Eggs which are not of the correct size, shape and colour are discarded

Step 3: Fumigation of eggs carried out after grading for around 40 mins to reduce growth of
bacterial or fungal growth on eggs

Step 4: Fumigated eggs taken to cold room, stored there for a period of maximum 5 days, at
a temperature of (60+-2 degrees Fahrenheit), and minimum 24 hours

Step 5: Eggs are then transferred to the Incubator

Step 6: Eggs are loaded into the incubator trays. Temperature of the egg trays kept at 99.80
degrees Fahrenheit and humidity at 86%. Maximum air circulation is ensured for the eggs.
Eggs are stored in the trays for a period of 18.5 days. Post storage, PULL OUT operation of
chicks carried out.

Step 7: Vaccination/ Sexing/Grading of chicks

Grading of chicks is especially important in the case of layer chicks as only the female
species of birds are to be retained for egg production

Step 8: Setting Team (Setting Operators): Responsible for setting controls of machines
 Examine eggs in cold room
 In case egg shells are broken( not visible to naked eye), visible in cold room
lights, check the condition
 Remove cracked eggs and load into the machine
 Units, farms where more than 1 lac eggs are set in 1 day ( in trays), a team of
setting operators would be required
 Especially in exclusive broiler hatcheries in South India

Poultry Sheds:

The main activities carried out in a poultry shed are:

 Shed maintenance

Poultry sheds are of two kinds:

 Open sided (open all sides): for natural ventilation

 Tunnel ventilated: artificial ventilation

Biosecurity measures

Biosecurity is a practice designed to prevent the spread of disease on a poultry farm. It is

accomplished by maintaining the facility in such a way that there is minimal traffic of
biological organisms (viruses, bacteria, rodents, etc.) across borders.
