MEIOSIS
o A type of cell division that
results in four daughter cells.
o Each have half the number of
chromosomes of the parents
cell.
o This process occurs in single
cell organisms and multicellular
eukaryotes.
DIVISION PROCESS
• Interphase
• Prophase I
• Metaphase I
• Anaphase I
• Telophase I
• Prophase II
• Metaphase II
• Anaphase II
• Telophase II
INTERPHASE
• The interphase in Meiosis is similar to
mitosis
• The cell prepares for division by copy itself
DNA
PROPHASE I
• Similar to the prophase in Mitosis
• The spindle fiber develops
• The nuclear membrane begins to
disappear.
METAPHASE I
• The chromosome begin to line up on
the metaphase plate
• The chromosome align on either side of
the plate
• The chromatids over overlap
themselves becoming chiasmata
ANAPHASE I
• During anaphase I, the spindle
pull onto either side of the cell
TELOPHASE I
• Each daughter cell has a single set of
chromosomes.
• The daughter cells are now haploids
meaning that they have a single set of
unpaired chromosomes.
PROPHASE II
• A new set of spindle fibers now form in
both of the daughter cells
• The chromosomes move towards the
middle of the cell
METAPHASE II
• Each separate pair of chromosomes
align on each metaphase plate
ANAPHASE II
• The centromeres split
• The spindle fibers shortens
which then pulls the
chromosome to each end of
the cell
TELOPHASE II
• The chromosomes fade
becoming chromatin like
• There are now four daughter
cells
REVIEW
o A type of cell division that results in Four daughter cells.
o Each have half the number of chromosomes of the parents cell.
o This process occurs in single cell organisms and multicellular eukaryotes.
