Beowulf Mid-unit

Beowulf portrays all of the Anglo Saxons values and can be outgoing. The Anglo-Saxons

were German people who created Beowulf. The poem of Beowulf is about a hero which is

Beowulf, He goes to Denmark to defeat an evil person named Grendel. Hrothgar told Beowulf to

go defeat Grendel’s mother. There are many things the Anglo-Saxons value, some are loyalty,

evilness, and bravery.

The Anglo-Saxons value loyalty. Everyone went to help Beowulf when he needed it.

Beowulf says, “Now when help was needed. None of the wise one’s regretted his going much as

he was loved by the geats” (Beowulf 116-118). This demonstrates loyalty because no one

hesitated to go and help Beowulf. Wiglaf does not abandon Beowulf when he needs him.

Beowulf states, “And only one of them remained, stood there, miserable, remembering, as a

good man must, what kinship should mean. His name was Wiglaf” (Beowulf 694-697). This

informs us that loyalty because out of all the men who were with Beowulf Wiglaf was the only

one who stayed. In conclusion, the value of loyalty is shown by being there when someone needs

you.

The Anglo-Saxons valued fighting evil. Grendel took friends from everyone. Beowulf

explains, “Knowing by its tracks that some demon had torn his followers apart. He wept, fearing

the beginning might not be the end. And that night Grendel came again” (Beowulf 47-50). This

shows value because Grendel is coming for Hrothgar and his followers. Grendel was going

around making more crimes and becoming an enemy to everyone. The author explains, “So

mankind’s enemy continued his crimes, killing as often as he could, coming alone, blood thirsty

and horrible” (Beowulf 79-81). This portrays the value of evil because Grendel kept coming

back and did not care what anyone thought. All in all, the value of evil is being shown from

Grendel by the different actions that he is showing.

The Anglo-Saxons value bravery. Beowulf and the Geats go and help Hrothgar. Beowulf

informs, “My lord, the great king of the Danes, commands me to tell you that he knows of your

noble birth and that having come to him from over the open sea you have come bravery and are

welcome” (Beowulf 127-130). This demonstrates bravery because Beowulf and the Geats have

come to where Grendel to defeat him and protect Hrothgar. Beowulf wants to defeat Grendel.

Beowulf states, “I have heard, too, that the monster’s scorn of men is so great that he needs no

weapons and fears none. Nor will I….God must decide who will be given to death’s cold grip”

(Beowulf 167-175). This shows bravery because he will not use any weapons, he will just use his

hands and let god decide what happens. Furthermore, the value of bravery is shown by everyone

going where Grendel is and not being afraid.

The Anglo-Saxons portray different things that others should respect. The values are

shown in many different ways. Being there when someone needs you can be important. Showing

people you are evil makes them think differently of you. Being brave shows that you are not

afraid to do anything. Beowulf accomplished what he has been waiting to do. Lastly, you should

not let anything get in the way of what you want to do and do not be afraid to face anything.
