I’ve grown a lot this semester and I know that. When I came into college I had a love of writing
and storytelling but I didn’t have confidence in my own writing or voice as a writer. This was
definitely a problem especially since I had chosen to be a journalism major at a major journalism
school. To say the least I didn’t really feel like I fit in at first or even knew what I was doing. In
high school, I used to overthink every sentence and struggle with grammar. I would say that over
the course of this semester and past year I've grown so much as a writer and as a person. I would
also say that i am much more confident in my writing consequently.
To me writing is a medium that you can use to tell a story, share your voice, share an idea, etc.
According to the WPA Outcomes, I am really proud of my personal accomplishments of Writing
processes when it came to researching and composing project 3. As a journalist, I am not allowed
to an advocate, and I am not allowed to have a point of view. I am very passionate about animals
so I really enjoyed being able to write with a persuasive lens was really refreshing because after
doing all this research and talking to people in the adoption community I wanted nothing more
than to be an advocate. Overall I am very pleased with my persuasive essay and my skills with
writing persuasively.
My understanding of writing coming into this course was that essays and reports had to make a
point and had to win that point by being backed up with evidence. Over the course of the
semester, I have come to learn through our lectures in Rhetoric, The Touloumin Structure, and
Rogerian structure that writing and arguments don’t always have to win. Sometimes you just
have to listen and that’s what I understand writing to be as now is that writing is a form of
storytelling where you can get people to listen and pay attention. My personal accomplishments
when researching composing project 2 were persistence, openness, and curiosity. Especially with
this project I really had to keep a neutral stance and i think just being open and curious to the
information was really important in this project especially since it was a research project in
which I needed to learn about a topic from all different perspectives and sources instead of
seeking it out from the sources I trusted and the slight bias's that I possessed. Overall though i
felt i did a really well job at using sources that varying in perspective and in turn my openness
helped me to learn so much and see the overlap in statistics or how one side used them in
comparison to the other side and if they left anything out or kept the whole part in.

What has contributed the most to my overall understanding of writing was writing more franctly.
The way in which I see the work in this class and the projects I have developed preparing me for
future projects in the university and beyond is curiosity. I think what each of the projects I did
this semester taught me is that I am so curious. When I embark on writing a paper, article, or
doing the research I learned that I invest myself 100% in the subject to learn more so that I can
write about it from a knowledge perspective and do the subject, issue, or topic justice. I think
this writing also taught me what i am capable of as a writer because I’ve had to write
journalistically, write academically, write persuasively, and write for a magazine and each of
these different types of writing have taught me the different ways in which to approach stories
and articles and that has been so valuable to me and I deeply appreciate how it has helped me
grow as a writer.
The relationship between my current understanding of writing and what I may still need to learn
is formatting and learning how to do it correctly. The habit of mind that I might do differently in
order to be more successful while working on my next writing project for one of my English
classes or journalism classes is Writing processes. I say I need to work on writing processes
because when it came to APA that was something that I had really struggled with and I didn’t put
the time, attention, or adequate detail in to learn. I just accepted that I didn't know and that I was
terrible at it and just did what I needed to get by instead of double check if I did my citations
correctly or if I integrated the parenthetical citation correctly. I think this was mostly in part due
to my busy and overwhelming schedule in which as is I only had so much time allotted to work
on each of my ENG 102 projects that my priority was to finish rather than for it to be perfect.
And that is where I missed out because I did my work and assignments to do them and missed
out on the opportunity to grow and learn. I want to learn how to format correctly in my writing
because although I may never use or see APA in my life again I do need to learn AP style
because it’s the standard of journalism. My point is that as much as the writing and the story are
important so is the formatting. So I am going to try to make an effort to leave in more time for
my writing and writing processes so that I don’t be sloppy with my formatting.
The way that I understand writing to be applied to other writing situations both inside the
classroom and outside the classroom is that writing is my life. I am a journalism major so stories
and writing are everything to me. Even this semester on a weekly basis I was publishing articles
for an online magazine while also working on stories for my news reporting and writing class. So
for me, my love of storytelling and writing has become and will be my career. I look forward to
the stories I’ll tell and the ways in which I will continue to grow as a journalist, writer, and
person.
