Course description:
This course is part of the integral education that Escuela Americana offers.
The Physical Education classes give the students the opportunity to develop good physical fitness, self-esteem and
sportsmanship. It also encourages character development and cooperative skills by practicing different sport
activities.
The Health & Wellness classes focuses on the latest trends in health, nutrition, physical activity and first aids.
Planned to provide the student with knowledge of health problems including physical fitness, nutrition, and major
diseases, and to encourage application of this knowledge for healthful living. We will review personal health, health
related attitudes and beliefs, and individual health behaviors, besides the application of first aids techniques for a
small emergencies.

Course Expectations:
 Demonstrate proficiency in all fundamental movement skills and patterns and competence in several specialized
movement forms.
 Apply movement principles and concepts to learning and developing motor skills and movement forms.
 Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of personal fitness.
 Demonstrate responsible personal and social behaviors in physical activity settings.
 Demonstrate a physically active lifestyle, including activity within and outside of the physical education setting.
 Identify the key components of personal fitness and describe the benefits of regular physical activity and healthy
diet.
 Demonstrate an overall knowledge of personal wellness.
 Identify behaviors associated with optimum health and wellness.
 Identify risk factors and warning signs used in the prevention of disease.
 Identify basic nutritional principles.

Course Objectives:
 Students will develop individual physical skills and abilities.
 Students will know the basic rules and regulations of the different sports.
 Students will gain an appreciation and enjoyment for physical activity.
 Students will know the role of health, nutrition, physical activity, and wellness in your daily life.
 How to identify personal health risks based upon current lifestyle choices.
 How to identify lifestyle changes that will enhance lifelong health.
 How to evaluate the evidence to support healthy behaviors and lifestyles.
 Students will be able to identify the key components of personal fitness and describe the benefits of regular
physical activity and a healthy diet.

Course Topics:
P.E. Units: Fitness Test, Physical Capacities Development, Cross Country, Track and Field, Table Tennis, Soccer,
Volleyball, Field Hockey, Chess, Softball/Baseball, Basketball, Handball, Flag Football, Kickball, Tennis, Dancing,
Aerobics, Climbing, Bowling and Yoga.
Health & Wellness Units: How my body works, Growth and Development, First Aids, Addictions, Nutrition for Life,
Healthy Habits, Emotional and Mental Health.

Methodologies:
- Teach and practice the basic techniques and skills of each sport or activities in order to apply and repeat them
during class practices.
- Explain and apply the different sport rules during class time and support them with written hand outs and
audiovisuals.

Grading:
The Physical Education, Health & Wellness grade is based on:
100% Active participation in class, (effort, attitude, participation, team work, presentations and hard work)
A total of 10 points will be awarded for each class period, using the following rubric:

10 Put excellent effort during this unit and engage in all of the activities, worked hard enough. Always had
a positive attitude in classes.
8 Student was moving and active during the entire class. Mostly had a positive attitude in classes.
6 Puts forth average effort. Sometimes had a positive attitude in classes.
4 Student sometimes moved slowly during the class. Sometimes involved in the activities. Sometimes
complained about what we did.
2 Passive attitude without any effort. Always complained about what we did.
0 Did not bring the PE uniform. Not participated during classes. Student was removed from class because
of an inability to follow directions and inability to cooperate or show disrespect or using foul language.

Semester Exam & Final Exam


P.E., Health & Wellness will have two exams (semester and final); the grade will be awarded by practicing activities
during each the units. During P.E. classes the teacher will evaluate based in a rubric, based in 5 different activities
included the rules of each sport. During Health & Wellness classes the teacher will evaluate based in individual and
group projects, presentations based on previous research and group work, quizzes, participation and debate.

Uniform infraction: During P.E. classes if the student doesn’t bring their P.E. uniform (including tennis shoes) they
won’t be able to participate in the class period, as a consequence, the student will get “0” (zero) in that class and an
infraction will be given at the first infraction.
It is mandatory that all students wear the complete P.E. uniform and tennis shoes during every class, even on
special jean days. Will not be accepted crocs, vans or similar shoes. Electronic devices are not allowed in class. Will
not accepted other uniforms (sports uniforms, classes t-shirts, etc.)

Absents: If your son/daughter cannot take P.E. classes due to illness (for 1 day), you must send a written or email
note to the teacher. If cannot take P.E. for more than 1 day you must send a medical excuse. In order to recover the
grades missed during absents, the student must present written report and make a presentation, following the
report guide upload in the Plus Portal.
If the students couldn’t do P.E. classes, he/she cannot practice sports or play a game after school activities that day.

Materials:
For PE classes we use the great sports facilities that the School offers in order to practice various sports. Also the
students will use adequate and safe sport equipment for practicing every unit. The students are responsible for
taking care of the class material; if a student intentionally destroys any sports equipment he/she will replace or pay
it, the administration office will determined its cost.
For Health & Wellness classes we will use Health Books, curriculum materials, videos and other audiovisual aids
includes the computer labs.

Note: under any circumstances, students will not be able to go to the parking lot during P.E. classes.
