El equipo ya no le hace algo "a" la familia sino que hace algo "con" ella, y la terapia se convierte entonces en una empresa en colaboración. No se trata de un nuevo método ni de una nueva escuela de terapia familiar. Pertenece a un nivel de abstracción más general, un nivel de valores y posición terapéuticos. En el proceso se modifican los roles, las reglas y las expectativas de la terapia. En este libro se describe la evolución de esta nueva estrategia en Noruega, y su adaptación en Estados Unidos por diversos terapeutas de familia.
