calling. He basically said they were not aware, and are uninterested, in how this will impact the community at large.
He did not want to consider my proposal of having each customer sign a waiver to indemnify GLID, as it seems
40% of waivers (according to my research) don’t stand up in court. In spite of the fact Marinus has insurance,
GLID has insurance, there has never once been issue taken with the quality of water, these men still seem con-
vinced that they are somehow at high risk. I don’t know how much more protected you can get than having double
insurance between you and the consumer. I wonder what other options there are, that may be worth discussion?

We have many people who will not be able to purchase off island water. There will, unfortunately, be community
members who will go without water for some period this summer. This lack of local water delivery will create an
incredible financial strain on many. Some people, especially single parent families and lower income families, will
be put in the position of having to choose between paying rent, or buying water. The stress and overwhelming
anxiety of having no water and no means to acquire it, is not something I would wish on anyone. Adding to the
already long list of challenges faced by families, single parents, low income & middle income, seniors, when there
is a potential solution not being looked at, speaks poorly of our community.

I have been made aware of an islander whose job it is to assist in water discussions and negotiations, in various
locations around the world. He will be home in a week and I will contact him regarding some possible assistance
in approaching these three men, who run the GLID system. I hope that some agreement can be attained for this
summer and a crisis will be averted. Because yes, it will be a crisis for many. While we await CVRD finalizing their
water service for the long term, it is not anticipated to be ready before next summer.

I have already heard from many individuals in our community, who are panicking and quite distraught about what
they are going to do without water. Many have stated they were barely able to come up with the extra $175 for
Marinus, they don’t know how they will be able to purchase water at the off-island costs. I have also found myself
in this position. The challenge of having to choose which bill not to pay and purchase water instead is not pleasant.
Try explaining that to Hydro or Telus. If this does not describe you and you feel that the current off island prices
are attainable, it means you are lucky for one and for another you may not be privy to the reality of everyone here.
People don’t always share their struggles, and I’m sorry to report, but there are more people impacted by this than
most realize. The CVRD granted $5000 for a feasibility study, to determine the possibility of selling water here.
Please contact Kris Larose at CVRD 250-334-6083, and let him know how important this is. We would like to pro-
vide them a list showing how many people will be seriously impacted. Please contact me to have your name added
to this confidential list, to be shared only with CVRD.

I have created a Facebook group called ‘Collective Water Purchases Denman Island’. If you will be in need of water,
and would like to connect with others and participate in a group purchase to offset the cost, please join this group.
If you do not have Facebook please contact me (friend or foe) and I’ll connect you with the group myself. This is a
band-aid solution at best, since for it to be effective, several people must be in need and have the cash at the same
time. One issue with off island delivery is the $125/hour charge added to the cost of the water. Considering the
potential (guaranteed) ferry waits, this cost will be higher than some can bear alone. Even as a group it will still
leave many of us struggling. What if the ferry wait is longer than anticipated and we are left unable to pay due to
the higher cost? There are reclusive members of our community who I fear will be left out.

I hope that the next article I write will be positive and full of solutions. I hope Peter Jackson, Chris Page and Blake
Hanna will choose to engage with their community over this serious concern and display a genuine desire to prob-
lem solve. If there is an opportunity for discussion, with the assistance of the aforementioned water negotiator, I
will share the date/time/location. So concerned and impacted individuals can attend and have their voices heard,
as well as participate together in seeking a solution for this summer. Also those of us who have ample water and
want to advocate for our neighbours who are lacking. Caring for the needs of all is a preventive measure in ensur-
ing the health and well being of the community a whole.
