Lesson
Summary:
This lesson is designed to increase student awareness of the letter and sounds associated with the
letters. The students have learned all the letters up to “P”. This lesson focused on the letter “P” and
the sounds and drawing of the letter. The students will be doing a series of four centers and then
two short class games to follow. The centers include using Ipads, counting with pennies, sentences
and painting a P. After the centers students will be given the opportunity to draw a “P” on the
SmartBoard. After that students will play a matching game on the SmartBoard where a picture is
given and they must draw next to it the letter that is associated with the word. This lesson will help
students to continue learning their letters and the sounds associated with the letters.

Estimated This lesson will take an approximately 110

Duration:
minutes. The first 10 minutes will be teacher instruction and explanation of the letter. The next 60
minutes will be broken up into four 15 minute sentence with the last 2 minutes of each center being
clean up time. The next 10 minutes will be a break time and students will watch an interactive song
video. The next 15 minutes will be practice on the SmartBoard. The final 15 minutes will be the class
matching game on the SmartBoard.
Preparation What preparation is needed?
of materials Teacher must get the center materials ready. The sentence writing sentence needs lined
and paper and pencils. The Ipad center needs the educational apps downloaded to it. The “P”
environment painting center will need large paintable P’s printed out for all students ( teacher may find it
useful to make an example”. The counting center will need a tens chart printed for each
student and pennies for students to use as counting tools. Teacher must also prepare a
matching game, may make a PowerPoint with different pictures on each slide.
What materials will be used?
The materials that will be used are ; SmartBoard, Ipads, paper, painting tools, pennies and
writing utensils.

How will the learning environment be set up?

The learning environment will be set up as four large student tables with four to five students
in a group at a table. The centers will be set up at each table then students will rotate. The
tables be set in a square so it will be easy for students to rotate in one direction. There will be
two paraprofessionals in the room assisting with two centers and helping to monitor students.
There will be a SmartBoard by a large carpet where students may sit.

Instructional Procedures:

First ten minutes teacher will provide an introduction. The teacher will ask students to say the letters that they have
learned as the teacher points to the letter written on a SmartBoard. When students reach the letter “O” teacher will
ask students if they know what letter comes next. Students should respond with the letter “P”. After that the teacher
will go back through the letters and practice the sounds. When reaching the letter “P” the teacher will tell students
the sound the letter makes and give examples of words that start with the letter “P”. Teacher will then ask students to
repeat the sound and ask if anyone knows any more words that start with the letter “P”. Teacher will then explain
each center. After the explanation the teacher will break students into groups depending on the size of the class and
tell each group which center to begin with. The centers will each be fifteen minutes and will be explained in the
following section. (10 minutes)
Center 1: Sentence center
Students at this center will work with a paraprofessional to create a short sentence with a word that begins with the
letter “P”. The paraprofessional will ask students if they can think of words that start with the letter “P”. The students
will give examples and then brainstorm as a group what sentence they would like to make. The paraprofessional will
help guide the students to decide a sentence. Example sentence may include “I like to play” or “the pig is pink”. The
sentences should be relatively short. The paraprofessional will then write the sentence in marker and may make the
word that starts with the letter “P” be in pink marker. After the sentence is written students will attempt to do the
best to write the same sentence. If time allows students may draw a picture about what their sentence is about. (15
minutes”

Center 2: Ipad
Students at this center will work independently on Ipads. The Ipads will have a variety of age appropriate apps that
the students may choose from. The apps may include such things such as AlphaTots Alphabet, Preschool Arcade,
Alphabet Flashcards and many others. Each app should be designed for preschool aged children and focus on the
alphabet or counting. Each student will be given an Ipad and a pair of headphones. Student can choose what app they
want to play on and will ask the teacher for help if they are having struggling with the technology. (15 minutes)
Center 3: Painting a P
Students at this center will be using painting tools to paint a capital and lower cased “P”. There will be a
paraprofessional at this table to help monitor the students and to help prevent major messes. Students will first be
instructed to write their names on the papers and then asked what the letter is again. After students answer that it is
a “P” and make the sound associated with it then they may begin painting. The painting tools can include a variety of
different colored paints and different sizes and textures of paintbrushes. After students paint both the letters they will
put the papers on a drying rack. (15 minutes)

Center 4: Counting with Pennies

Students will work with their teacher at this center to practice counting. The students will be given tens charts. The
students will use pennies as counting tools. The teacher will reinforce the topic of the letter “P” as it is used in the
word penny. The teacher will instruct the students to put a variety of different numbers on their charts. This center
helps students to practice their counting. (15 minutes)

Break Time 10 Minutes

During this time the teacher may take the students on a bathroom break or play some interactive songs. The songs
should be engaging and preferably having motions associated with the song.

Class Activity 1
During this time all students will be sitting on the carpet by the SmartBoard. The teacher will have popsicle sticks with
each student’s name and pick names. The student will then get up and select a color that they want to use on the
SmartBoard and then make the letter “P”. The teacher will allow for each student to have a chance at drawing a “P”
on the SmartBoard. If time allows the teacher may have each student write a different letter of the alphabet. This
gives students more practice at drawing their letters and encouraging their peers to also do good jobs on their letters.
(15 minutes)

Class Activity 2
The teacher will pull up the matching game on the SmartBoard. The matching game is a PowerPoint with a picture on
one side and then a blank space on the other side. The teacher will explain the game to the students. The game will
be played by a student’s name being called and then they will be asked what the picture is of and if they know what
letter that it starts with. If the student knows they will write the letter on the SmartBoard. If the student does not
know they may ask their classmates for help or they may ask the teacher for help. The students’ main job is
identifying the picture and trying to associate the beginning sound to a letter that they have learned. ( 15 minutes)
This completes the lesson on the letter “P”

This site is associated with PBS, a reliable children’s website. On this website there are a variety of different games
that the student may play. There are alphabet games and counting games. The games have different themes which
may appeal to the students’ interests. The students can gain more practice by playing these educational games.
Teacher may also suggest a preschool blog such as: https://novakdjokovicfoundation.org/top-10-educational-apps-
for-toddlers-and-preschool-age-kids/

This blog contains a list of apps that are used in the classroom and the description and several other top rated apps
for children in this age range.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the
needs of gifted or accelerated students:
The teacher may put the more advanced students all in a group and slightly change their centers. The student may
give these students a more advanced sentence or may be asked to count to a higher number. These students may also
have more advanced apps unlocked on the Ipads that they use.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:
These students may spend extra time with the paraprofessionals to increase their understanding. The students may
also be given an easier explanation of the material. The teacher may also suggest to the parents educational apps or
websites that they could use to help their child gain more knowledge about what they are learning about.
