Having your own school uniform as a child has incredible value. To you and me it might seem trivial, but the child wears that
uniform five days a week. It gives him or her an identity of belonging to something much bigger - the school where educa-
tion is taught and in turn, the place where a brighter future is created!
How wonderful that Born in Africa is able to provide each child with a full school uniform top to toe! This also
includes stationary as well as a sturdy backpack to house necessary school books. Why do schools insist on
uniforms? A school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance. Perhaps
most importantly, a uniform means students do not have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their
clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like is not that important.
This year a total number of 350 children received their uniform at the beginning of the school year and this
included children attending Kranshoek Primary, Harkerville Primary, Crags Primary, Wittedrift Primary,
Plettenberg Bay Secondary School, Wittedrift High School and Wittedrift High Primary.
Thank you godparents for providing each child with its own uniform!
Our mission is to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults acting as role models
in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children and young adults
from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.

Since January 2019 we have been blessed with no less than ten volunteers who have joined us on our path working with the
children in the Bitou area: Amelie, Dominik, Olivia and Sina from Germany; Femke, Hannah, Karen, Sofie and Ulrike from
Belgium and Bodi from The Netherlands!
Amelie Gensel is an 18 year old volunteer who is with us for three months and works at Kranshoek and The Crags Primary
school, alongside Sofie Segers and Ulrike Vlemincx.
Sofie Segers is a lovely young lady who has experience as a school psychologist and has offered four months of her time to
share her knowledge with us and make the kids laugh every day!
Ulrike Vlemincx is one of three interns we have welcomed so far this year studying Early Childhood development at KDG
College in Antwerp, Belgium. She is great with children of all ages and makes sure everyone’s voice is heard.
Femke Gerlo, studying a Bachelor in Social and Educational care work and also an intern from KDG College, is a full time
support for the teachers at Kranshoek Primary and offers after school activities at our education centre! Her enthusiastic and
caring personality makes it easy for our kids to feel safe with her.
At Wittedrift Primary we have Karen Poelman supporting the teachers in the mornings and
providing after school classes for our Born in Africa children together with Ulrike. Karen is a
student at Howest in Brugge, Belgium, studying towards a Bachelor in Psychology and per-
forming her internship with us for three months.
Sina Rilling, Dominik Geissler and Olivia Martin are three exceptionally generous young
adults of 18 years of age who have been with us for four months now. They all work together
at Harkerville Primary supporting teachers and children, giving extra reading, mathematics
and life skill classes.
The work of our volunteers is of great value as they support the most vulnerable children in
the mornings, the weaker students in often (too) big class groups, and enrich the lives of Born Karen

Thank you all, you are superstars!
Volunteers and board members in Belgium, Lotte and Nele, are responsible for selecting the right volunteers to join our team in South
Africa and they are great at what they do!
Having spent a lot of time volunteering in South Africa themselves, they know all the
ins and outs of Born in Africa, the schools and possible challenges volunteers may
have to deal with. They inform all candidates before their departure what
volunteering with Born in Africa entails exactly. We believe this is a vital part of our
volunteering programme, as they make sure everyone is well prepared and there
are no surprises upon arrival.
Thank you, Lotte Van Buyten and Nele Schroyen, for all the time and effort you
invest as volunteers in Belgium besides your full time jobs!

Swimming & competitions All children of Born in Africa live in and around Plettenberg Bay, a small coastal town
where the ocean or a swimming pool are never far away. To make sure our children are
confident and safe in the water we have enrolled them in several water safety
programmes; our own Born in Africa Learn to Swim programme, Adopt A Swimmer, the
Learn to Surf project and the local swimming and lifesaving club, Nippers.
Our children learn not only to be safe in the water themselves, but can also educate oth-
ers about the dangers of the water and get the opportunity to compete in nation-wide
championships! Keep on swimming, little fishes!
The dreams of 2019 are very diverse once again, from getting a beauty
treatment to going to a water park and getting help with serious dental
problems. Many dreams are things children in a first world country would
take for granted like having training shoes, your own bed or a toy and see-
ing the doctor for a medical issue.
Thanks to the amazing ongoing support from Jane and Alan Bradley, we
will be able to make many dreams come true this year!
The medical dreams are often expensive though and for these we are still
looking for more sponsors! For more information on this project, e-mail us
on info@borninafrica.org!
