Warning: Wear eye protection. Be careful not to burn yourself.
In demonstration 2, remove the can from the heat source before
sealing it.
Aim: To demonstrate Charles’ law.

Equipment:
Bunsen burner or other heater An empty screw-capped can, such as an oil can
Oven gloves Empty bottle with a 2 cm diameter short neck
Empty soda (drink) can (depends on size of egg)
Tray containing cold water Hard-boiled egg with shell removed

Method
● Put a small amount of water into the screw-
capped can.
● Heat it up until almost all the water has
boiled off.
● Using the oven gloves, remove the can from
the heat.
● Seal the can with the screw-cap.
● The can should implode.

cold water using the tongs or oven gloves.
● The can should implode.

Explanation
As the water vapour cools inside the can the
pressure inside the can reduces, causing the can
to implode before the water gets sucked into
the can.
