EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Based on the study conducted during the previous semester, one of the major
problems of Barangay Kalubihan, Cebu City is the improper disposal of garbage. The
proponents identified that most of these wastes are not caused by the residents but by the
by-passers of the barangay. Although the barangay has taken actions to resolve the issue,
the problem still exists.
For this reason, the class has thought of a modernized approach in promoting proper
waste disposal within the area. Since memes easily go viral today, most people are exposed
to it or at least has seen one already. With this in hand, the proponents thought of attaching
posters in areas where improper waste disposal in highly concentrated. This way, the
attentions of the by-passers are easily caught since memes are catchy. In addition, there is
also a social media platform that will complement and supplement the class project. It is in
the form of a Facebook page that would post original and generated memes. In this way, the
social media platform functions as the virtual equivalent of the actual posts that were
scattered around the barangay. However, the page is not limited to the same memes that
were posted.
The platform aims to promote and instill the virtue of proper waste disposal to the
barangay’s by-passer for the posters and to more general audience for the social media
platform through the project’s modern approach. It also provides an avenue for the Barangay
and Sangguniang Kabataan Officials to address their waste disposal problem in the future
when the project is implemented
The project commenced by generating memes that would appear later on in the
posters. After approval from the barangay and a few modifications, the memes were printed
on tarpaulin which were attached to a wooden frame and tucked. Simultaneously, the
Facebook page was created under the name of Your Daily Environmental Meme with the link
of https://www.facebook.com/ydenvmeme. Assigned proponents administer the page and
regularly posts meme. The page is also promoted by the proponents by inviting people online
and personally to like and follow the page. When the posters were ready, the proponents
passed them to the barangay through an official turnover ceremony of the project.
Unfortunately, the Facebook page wasn’t at that time since there was an internal conflict
within the barangay that caused the absence of the SK Officials. Nevertheless, the SK
Chairman has contacted and will be summoning the assigned proponents for the turnover
ceremony of the Facebook page.
So far, the posters have received excellent feedback. There was one social media
account that posted a picture of the meme poster that went viral. Also, page was able to
change its profile picture and cover photo, post 3 memes with a total of 17 likes and shares.
The page has reached a total of 314 people, and has 93 followers and 93 likers. The page
also received 2 private messages, one of which is an appreciation message.

RATIONALE
Memes has shown significant influence in the modern times and has been the most
attractive content of social media. The proponents have seen this as an avenue in
communicating to people effectively and in the most efficient way. Memes conveying
messages about how to dispose the trashes properly for example can protect the
environment from rubbish waste through the actions that people learned from the memes. It
is the reason why the proponents implemented an action of having tarpaulins that conveys
memes which give awareness in helping the environment.
Out of the numerous barangay within Cebu City, the proponents have selected
barangay Kalubihan as its beneficiary which comprises: Balintawak st., Colon st., Juez
Borromeo st., Leon., Kilat st., Manalili st., P del Rosario st., P Lopez st., Pres S Onmeña
blvd, and Sanciangko st. Within these areas, bulk of trashes are evidently seen which is very
unpleasing to the eyes and making the health of the people at risk. The said barangay was
chosen for it will not only benefit the the barangay but also the Josenian community.
OBJECTIVES

In implementing the project as a class, the proponents make sure that the said project
will be of utmost importance for the intended beneficiaries. In achieving this project
implementation endeavor, some of the set standards and objectives must be attain.

In general, these are some of the objectives that this project is focusing on taking:

 To raise awareness and promote proper garbage disposal;

 To reduce garbage especially on the areas of barangay Kalubihan where garbage
dump is concentrated;
 To provide an avenue for the barangay to address it garbage-related problems;
 To develop a "greener” Barangay Kalubihan.

Positive Project
Feedback

LESSONS LEARNED AND CONTINUED COMMITMENT

As the project was implemented, it exceeded our expectations as it got viral on social
media by the time the posters were hanged and we got positive feedbacks proving that there
are still people who are willing to help to make a change in this community which we
consider a success. We realized that though this project did not cost much and did not cost
much effort, though we sincerely and wholeheartedly gave our time and effort creating this
project. “Join the greener side” would not be possible without each team’s unity and
cooperation, for the leaders who took the first step to guide each team’s members
accordingly for the implementation and the planning of the project. Creating this project has
taught us to become involved in our community matters and to take care of our environment
and the people living in it. The class was able to connect with people who had helped us
accomplish our goal and we express our gratitude for it.

ANNEXES

The project was a success for us because it has a lot of great and positive feedbacks
from the citizens. Just recently, someone saw our tarpaulins, then took a picture of it and
posted it in her own Facebook account with a captioned that goes “See? Not all memes are
bad hahaha Good job SK Kalubihan and USJR for putting up memes like this to make an
awareness to the people about the proper garbage disposal. ” Through that post, a total of
7.3k reacts, 15k shares and 62 comments has made. A lot of people as well are sharing it
and posting it in their own Facebook account with a caption that goes “A responsible meme”,
“Eto yung pinka matinong meme na nakita ko”, “Memes are productive”; “Memes na may
kwenta”; “This project is worth to share” and many more. It even reached to different places
