LESSON PLAN – Lesson 1-3

Title: Ink Unit

LESSON 1
Grade Level: 9-12
Date Taught: Feb 8, 2019

Aim/Goal of the Lesson/Unit:


 There are many different painting techniques to utilize and master that can help an artist create their
own works of art the express themselves. Observing and practicing different techniques from a variety
of cultures, materials, and time periods are important in order to understand how a media such as ink
and paint can influence your own artistic identity.

 · VA:Cr2.1.8- Demonstrate willingness to experiment, innovate, and take risks to pursue ideas, forms,
and meanings that emerge in the process of art making or designing.
 VA:Cr.1.1.2a: Brainstorm collaboratively multiple approaches to an art or design problem.
 VA:Cr.1.1.1a: Engage collaboratively in exploration and imaginative play with materials.

Vocabulary/language:
 Sumi E: Japanese ink technique using black ink.
 Technique: the execution or performance of an artistic work.
 Wet on wet: a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered
layers of wet paint.
 Gesture: is a style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled, splashed or smeared onto the
canvas, rather than being carefully applied.
 Image transfer: an image transferred from one paper to another using acrylic medium.

Procedures:
 DISCUSSION: (10 minutes)
o Go over power point techniques
o Explain difference between ink and different types of paints
o Introduce ink artists (sumi e, Lora zombie)
 DEMONSTRATIONS: (5 minutes)

 Demonstrate layering and mixing colors

 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (25 minutes)
o Students will gather sketchbooks, water cups, brushes
o I will pass out: ink and palettes
o Students begin techniques listed on the board
o Dialogue: “Which technique are you struggling with?”
o 1 on 1 with students: suggestions for improving techniques, praising mastered techniques
o Give 10 and 5 minute warnings
o Formative Assessment: Students will respond to reflection questions handed out to them in their
sketchbooks in order to identify areas that need improvement for final unit project
 CLEAN UP: (_5_ minutes)
 Put names on sketchbooks and put supplies in cubbies
 Put brushes and water cups in the sink
 Wipe down tables and hands

Title: Ink Unit

 Analyzing and learning from different artists can help students better understand the media used by that
artist. Lora Zombie was a very unique ink artist that mixed traditional ink techniques with contemporary
subject matter. Students will practice changing the context in which an object exists and creating a new
juxtaposed narrative while practicing the many different ink techniques covered in class as tools for
creating their own original works of art.

 VA:Pr6.1.HSII Make, explain, and justify connections between artists or artwork and social,
cultural, and political history.
 · VA:Cr2.1.8- Demonstrate willingness to experiment, innovate, and take risks to pursue ideas, forms,
and meanings that emerge in the process of art making or designing.

o Show planning and rough drafting before starting their final projects

Vocabulary/language:
 Context: the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it
can be fully understood and analyzed.
 Value: The lightness or darkness of tones or colors.
 Technique: the execution or performance of an artistic work.
 Stain: a discoloration that can be clearly distinguished from the surface, material, or medium it is found
upon.

Procedures:
DAY 1
 DISCUSSION: (10 minutes)
o Reintroduce artist from Lesson 1 ppt -Lora Zombie
o Prompt students on their thoughts on Lora zombie “What do you remember about her work?”
o “Traditional medium techniques can be used to create contemporary ideas in art.”
o Discuss the meaning and importance of context: check for student comprehension, “can
anybody give me an example of what context this artwork could exist in?”

 DEMONSTRATIONS: (10 minutes)


o These are the techniques we will be using on this project
 Review different image and ink techniques
o Show teacher made exemplars
o Show images/exemplars
 (different Lora zombie works in changed contexts)
 “Create a black and white or grayscale image and change the context of that image
using different colored ink”
 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (20 minutes)
o Students will brainstorm and sketch out ideas in their sketchbooks
o Go around the class and comment on each students rough draft 1 on 1 to problem solve and
redirect students towards a final idea
o “What ink techniques would you use to achieve this?”
o “How would you change the context of this image with colored ink?’
 CLEAN UP: (5 minutes)
-put away sketchbooks
-put away any ink media students may have gotten out to rough draft ideas
 CLOSURE: (5 minute)
o “The goal is to have everyone start on their final papers tomorrow”
o “If you are stuck between ideas, determine which would be better achieved through ink
techniques practiced in class.”
DAY 2-4
 DISCUSSION AND DEMONSTRATION: (5 minutes)
o Review objectives of the project
-Change context of black and white image with color
-Use 3 ink techniques
-Take up whole page of final paper
 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (35 minutes)
o Students will finish rough drafting and start final papers by day 2
o All black and white images drawn or painted by student should be completed by the end of the
third day
o Colored ink context changes (3 techniques) should be started on the first half of day 4 at the
latest
o “Which ink techniques did you use?”
o “Think about what you are trying to convey to the viewers of your artwork.”
o Check in on students 1 on 1 to make sure they are on task and using the prompt to create
original works of art of their choice *make sure subject matter follows school policies (no
graphic violence, drugs, guns, nudity etc.*
 CLEAN UP: (5 minutes)
-put projects on drying rack
-palettes and sketchbooks in cubby
-clean brushes and water cups in sink
-put ink and other extra medium used back on the class cart
 CLOSURE: (5 minute)
o Remind students which how many days we have left to complete project
o Go over different sections of the rubric
o Encourage students to contact you with questions and concerns about the project even outside of
class
o Give time for students to ask general questions about the project at the end of class

 DISCUSSION AND DEMONSTRATION: (5 minutes)


o “This is the final in class work day to complete our projects. You may take them home over the
weekend to finish, but you are responsible for bringing them back Monday and for returning all
checked out materials.”
o *Reminder to class to fill out project self-reflections on google classroom and turn them in by
Wednesday next week.
o Give students time to ask any last questions about the project
 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (35 minutes)
o Students will add final touches and finish up incomplete areas of their project
o Identify if there are any students running behind and help them 1 on 1 (ex: didn’t add any color
yet, large areas of their papers blank)
o “Which final ink techniques did you use? (at least 3)”
o “Think about if you achieved what you are trying to convey to the viewers of your artwork.”
o Check in on students 1 on 1 to make sure they are on task and answer any questions on final
decisions the students want to make on their works.
 CLEAN UP: (5 minutes)
-put projects on drying rack
-hang up already dry projects for Monday’s critique
-clean palettes and sketchbooks in cubby
-clean brushes and water cups in sink
-put ink and other extra medium used back on the class cart (put away ink materials back in supply closet)
 CLOSURE: (5 minute)
o Reminder that we will start critiques next week and that you will go over how it will work on
Monday
o Encourage students to contact you with questions and concerns about the project even outside of
class
o Remind students taking their projects home to be careful with transporting their art and to bring
them back on Monday

LESSON 3

Aim/Goal of the Lesson/Unit:


 Critiques are a helpful tool to give an artist suggestions and associations received from their artwork.
Working as a class to talk about each individual project helps build mutual respect between students and
their artistic identities. As this is the first critique of the semester, establishing a safe space to share ideas
and personal artistic choices is the priority to set a standard for future projects.
Fine Arts Goals Met by the Objectives:
 VA:Cr.3.1.2a: Discuss and reflect with peers about choices made in creating artwork.
 VA:Pr.6.1.2a: Analyze how art exhibited inside and outside of schools (such as in museums, galleries,
virtual spaces, and other venues) contributes to communities.
 VA:Cr.1.1.2a: Brainstorm collaboratively multiple approaches to an art or design problem.
Objectives: Students will…
o Students will participate at least five times over the course of our two day critique.
o Students will be constructive and helpful with their criticisms
o Students will be respectful of their peers work and ideas
o Students will collaboratively analyze and interpret different works of art

 Critique: a constructive review or examination of something critically.
 Collaboration: the action of working with someone to produce or create something.
 Appraisal: the act of assessing a work of art.
 Context: : the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which
it can be fully understood and analyzed.

Procedures:

DAY 1
 DISCUSSION: (5 minutes)
o Define and explain how critiques function
o First half of the class is going today, the second half is going tomorrow
o Explain 5 points for participating and hanging up your work, 5 points for each time you
participate by speaking (5 times, 1 point per discussion)
o Purpose of critique is to interpret and help improve students’ work
 DEMONSTRATIONS: (5 minutes)

These are the techniques we will be using on this project

 “sandwich method” a compliment, a criticism, and something positive to end
o Show examples of what would be considered an unhelpful versus a respectful criticism
 HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPECTING EACH OTHERS WORK AND
IDEAS: “THIS IS A SAFE PLACE TO PUT YOUR WORK OUT INTO THE WORLD
AND SHOW OTHERS.”
 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (35 minutes)
o Students will write their name on 5 slips of paper and every time they participate; I will take a
slip of paper and every student should have no papers left by the end of day 2 critiques to ensure
that everyone fairly participates evenly.
o “What associations to you make about this work?”
o “Do you think this student successfully changed the context of their work for the viewers?”
o “Which ink techniques does this artwork incorporate?”
 CLOSURE: (5 minute)
o Reminder to save the rest of their slips for the other half of the class tomorrow.
o Reminder to remain respectful for the next half of our critique
o “What went well today, should we change anything about how we conduct tomorrow’s
critique?”

DAY 2
• DISCUSSION: (5 minutes)
o Review examples of what would be considered an unhelpful versus a respectful criticism
 RE-HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPECTING EACH OTHERS WORK
AND IDEAS: “THIS IS A SAFE PLACE TO PUT YOUR WORK OUT INTO THE
WORLD AND SHOW OTHERS.”
 Remind students to get out their remaining paper slips.
 DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (35 minutes)
o “What associations to you make about this work?”
o “Do you think this student successfully changed the context of their work for the viewers?”
o “Which ink techniques does this artwork incorporate?”
 CLEAN UP: (5 minute)
o Everyone takes down their works from the wall
o Turn in works into the bin to be graded
o Put chairs back at original tables

 Thank everyone for participating and being a respectful class
 Review rubric for project and how everyone will be graded
 Talk about the value of collaboration during critique
Assessment: 5 pts- putting up your artwork to be analyzed by the class
5 pts- participating 5 times throughout critiques (1pt per paper slip)
