INTRODUCTION

EMPLOYEE WELFARE MEASURES – CONCEPT

“Welfare is a broad concept referring to a state of living of an individual or a


group, in a desirable relationship with the total environment, ecological, economic, and social
welfare includes both the social and economic contents.

IMPORTANCE

The industrial progress depends on a satisfied labor force, and the importance
of employee welfare measures. After the placement of the employees, they should be given
proper training and programmers’ to develop their efficiency so as to serve the organization
better. Welfare activities are designed to take care of the well-being of the employees.

DEFINITION OF EMPLOYEE WELFARE

The oxford dictionary defines employee Welfare as “ efforts to make life worth living for
workmen”. These efforts have their origin either in some stature formed by the state of in some
local customer or in a collective agreement or ion the employer’s own initiate lab our welfare
measures in his undertaking with the objective to give expression to philanthropic and
paternalistic feelings and to win over employees loyalty and increase their morale.

FEATURES OF EMPLOYEE WELFARE

 Employee welfare includes various facilities and amenities provided to employee for
improving their health, efficiency, economics betterment social status.
 Welfare measures are in addition to regular wages and other economic benefits available
to employees due to legal provisions and collective bargaining.
 Lab our welfare measures are flexible and ever – changing new welfare measures are
added to the existing ones from time to time.
 Welfare measures may be introduced by the employers, Government, Employees or by
any social or charitable agency.

BENEFITS OF WELFARE SERVICES

 Services like housing schemes, medical benefits and education and recreation facilities
for the worker’s family’s help to create better goodwill.

 Welfare facilities provide better physical better physical and mental health to the
employees.
 Employee’s secure serve maintain some degree of peace with the employee union.
 An employee is able to abstract talented works from the employee market by providing
attractive welfare facilities.

WELFARE AND AMENITIES PROVIDED BY ESTABLISHMENT

1. Proper arrangement of drinking water.


2. Shelter, Rest and lunch room is provided by the organization and the name is
given fun zone.
3. First aid facilities are provided by the organization by arranging various
medicines and prescribed contents.
4. Various training and development programs are arranged by the company.
5. Various employee codes are provided to the employee to get the product cheaper
from big bazaar.
6. Maternity benefits.
7. ESI is provided by the company in which there are two aspects one is the medical
insurance of the employee and other is PF benefits.
8. Facility to pursue their education with work.
9. Yearly bonus is provided to the employees to motivate them for doing work more
effectively.
10. The workplace is regularly clean.
11. Good washroom facility is provided to the staff.
12. There is good arrangement of tea and coffee for the employees.
13. Monthly meeting is organized by the organization in which employee of the
month is announced to motivate the workers to work more effectively.
14. Snacks party is arranged by the company on monthly basis.
15. Target and per piece incentive is provided to the employees to motivate them to
increase the sales and for their personal growth.

COMPANY PROFILE

Future group led by its founder and Group CEO, Mr. Kishore Biyani is one of the
India’s leading business houses with multiple business spanning across the consumption space.
While retail forms the core business activity of future group.

BIG BAZAAR is an Indian retail store that operates as a chain of hypermarkets, discount
department stores and grocery stores. The retail chain was founded by Kishore Biyani under his
parent organisation Future Group which is known for significant prominence in Indian retail and
fashion sector. Big Bazaar is also the parent chain of Food Bazaar, Fashion at Big Bazaar and
ezone where at location its houses under one roof while it is sister chain of retail outlets like
Brand Factory, Home Town, Central,eZone etc.

Founded in 2001 Big Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest hypermarkets chain
of India, housing about 250+ stores in over 120 cities and towns across the country.

HISTORY

Big Bazaar was founded in 2001 by Kishore, the founder and chief execurive officer of
the parent company, the Future Group.

Popluar Indian actress Asin and then the Captain of Indian cricket team , Mahendra singh dhoni
have previously endorsed for the fashion vertical of Big Bazaar.

On successful completion of ten years in Indian markey, in 2011 Big Bazaar has come up
a new logo with a new tag line: ‘Naye India Ka Bazaar”, replacing the earlier one “ Isse Sasta
Aur Accha Kahin Nahin” and the lastest one is “Har Din Sasta”

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

A study was conducted on welfare measures by KARABAKRAN (1983) his findings


are as follows Dunlop India Ltd, has undertaken a number of welfare measures in addition to
statutory provision. Majority of the workers and staff are satisfied about the welfare facilities
provided by the concern.

S.KUMAR (1993),’ A study on the Labour welfare measures in AFT Ltd Pondy’. The
author concluded the objective of the study is to find out the welfare facilities provided on the
AFT and the employee’s suggestion and opinion about the welfare measures by using structure
questionnaire and by concluded the personal simple random sample for the sample of 100. The
study revealed the welfare measure provided by the company was adequate except for a new
systems like housing schemes and pension scheme.

JOHRI C.K AND SHARMA D.I, “Financing and administration of employee welfare “
Sri Ram centres for industrial relation 1968, New Delhi. Analysis on the lines of important
aspects to be much more deficient is considered as a favor by the employer to employee in terms
of providing facilities like having education and recreation.

K.Srikanth-July 2004. “The productivity of organization is depend upon occupational


wealth and employee well being”. He concluded the research addressing occupational health and
employee well being concentrates on 4 major areas in organizational psychology, job security,
work hours , control at work and managerial style. The heightened pressure can impact their
behavior towards employees.

S.K.SRIVASTRA (2004) in a study on ”Impact of labour welfare on employee attitude


and job satisfaction’, found that, if the management goes on working for welfare of labourers,
the labourers feel satisfied with their job and the get the motivation towards their work. For the
study two hundred workers selected from private and public sector with the help of incidental
sampling method and both the sectors have been taken from the Kanpur city. Further the result of
the study indicated that welfare activities affect the workers attitude towards management and
job satisfaction in both sectors.

According to Mr. Robert(2006) Employee welfare in general, these are the benefits that
an employee must receive from his/her company, like allowances, housing for those companies
who provides, transportation, medical insurances, food and some other way where the employees
has rights to demand.

According to MR. R. PRADEEP (2009) “Employee welfare is a comprehensive term
including various services, benefits and facilities offered to employees & by the employers.
Through such generous fringe benefits the employer makes life worth living for employees.”

According to MR. RAVIKUMAR(2003) “Welfare includes anything that is done for the
comfort and improvement of employees and is provided over and above the wages. Welfare
helps in keeping the morale and motivation of the employees high so as to retain the employees
for longer duration”. The welfare measures need not be in monetary terms only but in any
kinds/forms. Employee welfare includes monitoring of working conditiond, creation of industrial
harmony through infrastructure for health, industrial relations and insurance against disease,
accident and unemployment for the workers and their families.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
It is the way to systematically solve the problem of research, the research methodology used the
various methods and techniques for conducting research is an art of scientific investigation.. In
other words research is a scientific and systematic search for the pertinent information about
specific topic. The logic behind taking research methodology into consideration is that one can
have knowledge about the methods and procedures adopted for achievements of objective of the
project.

Research Design

For this study design used was descriptive. Descriptive design as the name itself implies, is
conducted to describes the factors that lead to increase the productivity of the company. The
present study consists of all those individuals who are working as a employee in big bazaar. This
study is based on sample survey method . This study mainly accesses the level of awareness to
know the perceived opinion and to measure the attitude of individual towards their company and
their job roles & job satisfaction level.

Methods of data collection

Sources of data

Both primary and secondary data were collected for this study.

Primary Data

The objectives of the study has been accomplished with the help of primary data
collected from 100 employees.

Secondary Data

Secondary data was collected from company records and websites.

Definition of the population

Population means the employees of Future Retail Ltd ( Big Bazaar Amritsar).

Sampling element

The respondents who asked to fill out the questionnaire are the sampling elements. These
comprise of employees of team member level, team leader level as well as the department
managers of the big bazaar store.

Sampling techniques

Convenience sampling technique is used for collecting the data from different employees.

Sampling Description: In order to understand the nature and the characteristics of various
respondents in the study, the information was collected and analyses according to their social
economic background which included the characteristics like education, occupation and age .

Sample size

Sample size is 100 respondents.

LIMITATIONS

Following are some of them limitations of the study:

1. The data collected during working hours, employees were busy in their routine work
so they were less responsive.
2. Inadequacy of time was a major limiting factor faced by researcher.
3. Certain employees were biased in answering to the questions.
4. Some employees were less interested to fill the questionnaire so they the question
without understanding the question.
5. The study conducted for study purpose only.

CONCLUSION

The objective of this study was to know the various welfare measures adopted by BIG
BAZAAR and to know the effectiveness of welfare measures in the company. The objective
was to find out the satisfaction level of the employees working in big bazaar. From this study we
can understand that 65 % of the employees are satisfied from the company and majority states
that welfare measures improve their productivity and play as a motivational factor for them.
From this study we can understand that the employee turnover get reduced. The welfare
measures are directly related with the productivity and company provide many welfare packages
to employees for increasing their efficiency and productivity like the incentives are provided to
the employees according to the target achieve and per piece allowance is also provided to
motivate the employee to increase the sales. These type of measures are become beneficial for
both the employee and the employer.

 Overtime should be paid for hours worked over 54 hours per week.
 Passes should be allotted to the employees who are allowed to keep mobile phone with
them on floor.
 The management shall arrange more programmes to improve the employee’s awareness
about the welfare measures working conditions and social security schemes.
 A yearly trip or tour should be arranged for the employees for mind relaxation.
 Performance appraisal increment should be semi-yearly.
