Reflection on Identification of Goals

What is it and under what conditions was it created?

This assignment was completed as part of the Literacy 798 course. I was asked to mark a + (area
of strength) or a - (area of need) next to a variety of literacy practices. I then used this
information to identify appropriate goals for my reflective journey.

Why did you select it for this section?

I placed this artifact in the Reflective Professional section, because it shows evidence of goal
setting and reflecting. I also identified problems, or areas of improvement, in my practice. For
example, I recognize that I need to work on balancing individual instruction, guided reading,
book clubs, and literature circles. I also included a few goals that will help me become a change
agent in my school. One characteristic of a reflective professional is one who is willing to share
research and findings with colleagues.

Growth and change?

By completing this assignment, I recognize that I need to step out of my comfort zone and
increase my knowledge and experience with middle and adolescent readers. My experience up
until this point has been with elementary students only. I am looking forward to participating in
Literacy 721, so that I can work closely with students at the secondary level. I also recognize
that I need to become more of a change agent at my school by helping with the planning and
implementation of professional development opportunities.

I recognized a strength in the area of pedagogy and curriculum. There is always room for
improvement, of course, but I do feel that I have a fairly good understanding of planning and
implementing instruction based on assessments. I use assessment results to determine when
students need intervention, and to group students. I also incorporate content and technology
across the curriculum.
