Susquehanna University Alumni Return for Annual Break Through Career Fair

Over 100 Susquehanna University alumni returned to their alma mater to provide current
students with career advice on Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16 for Susquehanna’s annual
Break Through career event.

On Friday, both alumni and students participated in a career expo from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and
5 p.m. to 7 p.m. as well as panels discussing career paths and necessary team skills for post-
graduation endeavors.

The career expos gave students the opportunity to find jobs and internships and ask alumni
questions about jobs in their career field. Twenty-eight employers were present at the expos
including Comcast, M&T Bank and Weis and discussed the job opportunities they had open for
students to apply to.

Events on Saturday included three panel sessions starting at 11 a.m. as well as a student-
alumni lunch at noon and networking reception at 5 p.m. The panel discussions included a variety
of topics such as major-focused panels, industry-based panels and alternate post-graduation
options. Examples of panel topics included How to Maximize your Summer, Possibilities of a
Business Degree, Small Talk Practice: How to Talk to Someone You Don’t Know and Working in the
Nonprofit Sector.

Faculty and staff moderated the panels that were pertinent to their field of study and were
given the opportunity to reconnect with their past students and learn more about what is going on
in the panelists’ careers.

Communication department faculty members Linda Burkley and David Kaszuba

participated in Break Through as panel moderators. Both Burkley and Kaszuba think Break
Through is a great experience for students to participate in.

“Coming to Break Through is a valuable experience because it brings students up close and
personal with SU alums who have had some measure of success in their chosen fields,” Kaszuba
said. “It gives students a chance to ask questions, gain insights and help clarify their own path and
how they’ll get to where they want to go.”
While Break Through does emphasize networking and skills for students’ futures, it also
creates an opportunity for students to learn from experience. “It’s great practice for students to
have that interpersonal exchange with people,” Burkley said. By having alumni back, it gives
students the chance to make the professional connections and relationships with alumni that can
help them with their future.

Faculty, staff, alumni and students look forward to the opportunity to talk about
Susquehanna University and connect with people who know and cherish their Susquehanna
experience. The alumni who return to Susquehanna for this event love to come back and continue
to give back to a place that continues to give to them.

“They were all very interested in helping students and being there and being part of Break
Through,” Kaszuba said.

Break Through is an annual event at Susquehanna University sponsored every spring

semester by the Career Development Center with its mission to provide students with the proper
tools needed for their job and internship search. The Career Development Center offers students a
variety of services including resume help, internship and job searches, professional and graduate
school assistance, and interview prep.
